Charles Babbage age 41


has been credited with the
design of the first
mechanical computer.
consisting of over 7,000
parts this 5 foot tall
machine can add and
subtract automatically.

Using gears, rods, wheels,
arms and more gears the
differential engine adds or
subtracts then writes on
paper to produce tables.
This calculating engine
was no small task though,
costing over 17,000 and
19 years of work for

this machine may never get


finished. Due to the
government's unwillingness
to fund further projects and
the fact that the difference
engine did not do what
Babbage promised, making
the government skeptical,
and the fact that this new
machine is very complex and
expensive. whatever happens
to Babbages engine we hope
that someday this new
technology will advance and
easy computing will be
available to normal citizens
nulla.

sketches for the analytical
engine. A device more
complex and overall better
than before. However
