My name is Rachel Miliacca. I am the youngest of three children.

I have two
older brothers, one of which is no longer with us. I am married and have three
children, Vincent 21 years old, Regina 20 years old, and Rosanna 15 years old. I
have been married to my wonderful husband for 25 years now and I am looking
forward to at least 25 more. My dream as a young girl was to be a school teacher.
Although right out of high school I was not able to attend college for financial
reasons, I am on my way to pursuing this dream.
Prior to beginning my career in the education field, I was in the transportation
field. The company I worked for offered to send me to school to obtain my degree in
Transportation. I attended MATC night school, and enjoyed every bit of it. When I
settled down and began to have a family, I left the transportation business to
become a stay at home mom. I did have little part-time jobs here and there and
took a few college classes in the medical field, but just wasnt happy. It just wasnt
what I enjoyed.
I began my teaching journey as an aide at Grace Lutheran School in the 4k
classroom in 2006. I was a stay at home mom until we enrolled my youngest
daughter in the 5k program. I worked at the school as a 4k aide, 1 st and 2nd grade
aide, and also was a special reading tutor. I learned so much in this position from
the great teachers I was aiding for, but I wanted to do more for the children. A
position became available at Grace Early Childcare Center and after much
consideration decided to give it a try.
I began my career in early childhood working as part-time teacher in the 1
year old room. I enjoyed every minute I was with the children, and decided that this
was a great start to a career that I would be happy in. When a positon opened up in
the infant room, I knew that it would be a good fit for me. The Director took a
chance and allowed me to be the lead teacher of the infant room since May 2011. I
have been the lead teacher in the infant room ever since.
I am looking forward to many more years in the early childhood field, and
furthering my career to a higher level.

Philosophy Statement
I believe that the safety of the children is one of the most
important aspects of childcare. It is important to me to set up an
environment that makes the children feel safe and secure, and is
nurturing and responsive to the needs of the children.
My relationship with the children in my care will center
around the trust that I establish with them. These relationships
come from my interactions with them, especially the three-R
interactions which include respectful, responsive, and reciprocal
interactions (Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers by Janet GonzalezMena and Dianne Widmeyer Eyer). It is through these interactions
that the children will develop the trust needed to feel comfortable
enough to begin to communicate their needs and know that I will
respond to them.
I also believe that the appropriate curriculum that I will
present to the infants/toddlers in my classroom will be based on
their individual needs. I will use the everyday routines of the
infants/toddlers as an opportunity to build the relationship I have
with them. This strong relationship will promote a learning
environment with all their daily needs.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REFLECTION AND

PLANNING
Adapted from the New Vision Assessment

REFLECTIONS

Begin by thinking about your career and making specific statements about it. Use this tool to reflect on
your professional satisfaction and growth.

1. What excites you MOST about your job?

I love to be with the children and watch them develop and grow as human beings.

2. What challenges are you currently facing in your work?

The two biggest challenges in my job are lack of time to prepare for class and the heavy load of work
involved in trying to be a successful teacher. Another challenge is the lack of funding the teachers have
for classroom supplies.

3. What would you CHANGE about your current position? If more than one, please prioritize.

.I would allow for more down time to do planning and portfolios, as it is very easy to fall behind. The
second thing I would do is to allow more individual time so that I can do more observations and
assessments.

4. Of the topics listed below, reflect on each topic and describe what you do well and in what areas
would like to experience growth.

Child-Care Giver Relationships I believe that I have a great relationship with the children and the families
that I work with. If I had more individualized time with the children that would improve it even more.

Observation and Planning My observations are not done enough on the children. I would like to set up a
schedule for observations that would make sure that I get them in.
I think that my lesson planning is very detailed and creative.

Learning Environment
My learning environment could use some sprucing up. I need to add more pictures and posters and would
like to see some environmental changes to my room. I do make the best of what I have and try to
purchase as much as I can out of my own pocket, but I just dont make enough to supply my room with
all the necessary materials to be as successful as I would like.

Guiding Children
I think that my method of re-directing is an outstanding way to guide my children.

Parent Relationships
I think that my relationship with the parents throughout the entire center is good. The only thing that I
might improve on is to follow more of my kids further than just the next room.

Health and Safety

I think that I do a great job of keeping my room clean and safe for my little ones. If I could improve it
would be on doing deeper cleaning throughout the week instead of just on Saturday to try to kill all those
germs.
Community Involvement
I need to improve on my community involvement.
Advocacy

I would like to become more involved in our local WECA organization. I am a member but would like to
be on a higher level.
5. List three job related areas in which you would like to learn more and gain skills
1. _Director Administrative_________________________________________________________
2. _Teaching Adult classes_________________________________________________________
3. __________________________________________________________

5. Which Professional Organizations are you currently involved in?

a. _______National Association for the Education of Young Children
b. __X_____Wisconsin Early Childhood Association
c. ___X____ Local AEYC Affiliate
d. _______ Wisconsin Family Child Care Association
e. _______ Wisconsin Child Care Administrators Association
f. _______ Local Family Child Care Support Group
g. _______ Other, please specify
h. _______ Not a member of any professional organizations at this time
