Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my interest in a position with your organization. Coming from an
extremely conservative household has inspired me to go outside of my previously sheltered
mindset and learn in detail about marginalized populations. One of my biggest passions is
advocating with social justice campaigns. As an undergraduate student at James Madison
University acquiring a Bachelors of Science in Communication Studies with classes being taken in
Advocacy and Public Relations, I have taken many classes that enhance my advocacy skills. This
is bolstered by my minor in social justice, which gave me a more in-depth understanding of human
rights and how I want to give a voice to the voiceless and help diverse populations in anyway I can.
It is my hope that my soon to be degree will qualify me to the extent that I may work in the field of
social justice and advocacy.
My previous experiences have allowed me to become accustomed to an office environment and
taught the proper etiquette for interacting with political professionals. They have also sharpened
my research, organizational and writing abilities. At the office of Congressman Jared Polis of
Colorado, my role was largely as an office liaison to constituents and political professionals alike,
while simultaneously writing and distributing literature (e.g. letters, congressional bills,
certificates) on the Congressmans behalf. I also learned to make a mean cup of coffee. I have had
the tremendous opportunity of working as an Orientation Peer Advisor, diversity educator, and
student events coordinator for my Universitys LGBT& Ally Education Program. As an Orientation
Peer Advisor, I was able to showcase James Madison Universitys expansive diversity program.
My work as a diversity educator has helped allow me the growth and education both personal and
for other students on social issues, especially in todays society. Finally, my job as the student
events coordinator for the LGBT& Ally Education Program has taught me about a population that I
dont personally identify with, but that I am very interested in being educated about. I have learned
so much about the oppression of LGBT individuals and have worked tirelessly to do what I can.
These positions have each taught me the importance of being both a self-starter and a team player.
It would be an honor to offer my passion for interning for your organization. Any and all inquiries
into my qualifications and experience are welcomed, so please feel free to contact me with any
further questions. I can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at
(973) 735-3275. Thank you for your consideration; I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Shannon Garner
