Artifact: EDCI 51300 Professional Organization Discussion

Artifacts assignment detail (provided by the instructor):
In this week, we will share our career goals, examine diverse professional
organizations associated with our field, and identify competencies required for
you to build in order to reach the goals. Here are several steps for this activity
Artifact Overview:
Written in the fall of 2013, I overview my career objectives and participation in
the field and Communities of Practice (COP).

Competency 6
Identifies and participates in communities of practice within the field of Educational
Technology
While working for a prominent distance educational firm, I served the
Professional Education product lines. These products provided training and
certification preparation for in-demand business skill sets such as Project
Management, Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management, Business Analysis and
more. This exposure provided keen insight into the needs for specialized training
in the corporate industry and involvement with COPs. While in a Sales capacity,
I was speaking regularly with established business professionals who described
the value for this involvement. As such, I was sold on the concept and sought
out this direction for myself.
As the worlds largest association dedicated to those who develop talent in
organizations (ATD.org, 2015), the Association for Talent Development (ATD),
formally ASTD, is the COP that I have elected to pursue. Joining the national and
local chapters back in 2012, I have been able to acquire knowledge and
networking connections through the free articles provided on the member sites
and attendance to the local chapter meetings.
The Suncoast Chapter of Tampa Bay, FL is the local chapter with which I
participate. Each month, they hold a meeting at a posh country club that
includes a dinner and guest speaker. From the networking during dinners and
value-add information provided by the speakers, I have been able to apply my
learning and experience for the better. To note, our local chapter is paired up
with the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) Florida westcoast chapter which provides members with expansive value.

Continued Learning
As referenced in my Competency 5 Narrative, I plan to pursue my Certified
Performance Technologist (CPL) certification through ISPI after completing this
degree. Along with, I plan to become more active with my participation in ISPI. In
conjunction with the ATD COP, I will expand my networking and development
opportunities for my career. Time permitting, I would like to become more than
just a member by serving on the local board for my Chapter. This will provide
great experience and demonstrate to employers my value for future recruitment.
