ISU Reflection #1

In Abishnas novel Anils Ghost by Michael Ondaatje the main character is an

archaeologist who is trying to solve a mysterious case of murder while avoiding the attention of
the government because they could threaten her life. This book seems very interesting because
the main character is an archaeologist and that is very different for a murder mystery where the
main character is usually a reporter or accidental finder. I also found interesting the fact that the
government might have murdered the victim and the general fact that the government killed
innocent people for disobeying order as said in the novel. The speaker didnt seem very fond of
the novel due to the way she presented the facts. She couldnt recall the main points very easily
indicting a lack in interest in the novel. She also said that the presence of irrelevant facts in the
novel occasionally distracted her from the main story. In my opinion the novel seems interesting
because I have liked murder mysteries and in this case the perpetrator could be the government.

In Shakeemas novel A Perfect night to go to China by David Gilmour the main

characters son goes missing and could be a case of kidnapping. This leads to the downfall of the
main character where he loses his job due to his fiery temper and his drinking gets out of control.
The most interesting part of this novel is the main characters dream world called Caribbean
Town where he ventures while he is dreaming. This place is supposedly filled with the dead as
the main character sees people that he knew have died and amongst these people he sees his son.
The speaker spoke fondly of this book because of the slight confusion as the main character
switches back and forth between reality and his dream world. She spoke of it as very engaging
and generally well written. She also recommends reading this book in the future. This novel is

the most interesting of the three because of the aspect of a dream world. I would like this novel
since it involves a kidnapping and stories with action are very engaging.
In Mallorys book The color Purple by Alice Walker takes place in the South and the
main character is a weak and uneducated person who lives with her abusive father who has
impregnated her twice and sold both of those kids. The main characters sister in law was
imprisoned for assaulting the mayors wife and this is especially bad for them because they are
blacks living in a white town. I found the hatred of the main characters (her name is Celie)
mother towards her interesting, as the mother dies on her bed cursing Celie. Next, Celies sister
is to be married to a man who goes by the name of Mister but her father lets her be married to
Mister since she is older. Celie has a very hard life first being raped at a young age, then being
cursed by her dying mother and finally being married off to a stranger at the age of fourteen. The
reader seemed to like this novel because it is written like Celie is writing a journal. But since the
overall cruelties written about in the book such as rape and domestic violence the novel has a
dark note to it. She also said the novel is interesting because you anticipate and hope for the main
character to live a better life. I dont feel the novel is interesting because of my dislike for stories
of this nature. The story is depressing and I dont like reading about the suffering of others. I also
have never found the theme of racism ever engaging as it brings up issues that should have long
ago died.
My performance in the group was good but could have improved. I listened carefully the
entire time and when I felt details were missing I asked questions to the person presenting. My
speaking skills could have improved if I had come slightly more prepared by skimming over the
book again and maybe preparing notes beforehand. But I was able to concisely present all the
major points of my novel.
