This document outlines the requirements for a student-directed study project in a Physical Science course. Students can work individually or in groups of up to 3 people to investigate a topic of their choosing related to physical science. They must write a proposal identifying the problem, materials, procedures, and data analysis plan. Throughout the project, students should keep a portfolio documenting their experimentation process. Finally, students will write a lab report and present their findings and conclusions to the class within a 5-minute time limit.

PSC20
Student-Directed Study (SDS1)
Your goal for this outcome is to choose a topic that is related to Physical Science and to design an investigation to further explore your topic. You are able to work individually or in groups up to maximum of 3. Part A Choose a topic related to PSC20. o Hint this becomes a much better project if you choose a topic that interests you. Decide on a problem that you would like to investigate. If you choose a problem where the answer is obvious, your topic may not be approved or your project will be marked more critically. You also need to choose a problem that will allow you to work safely. If you are uncertain, talk to your instructor and ask for advice. Once you have decided on a topic, you need to plan for your experimentation. This means that you should have a list of materials and a procedure that you will be able to share with your instructor. Once all of the above has been planned, you (and your group) are required to write a proposal. In your proposal you should identify what problem you would like to test, how you will go about testing, what materials you will require, and how your data will be analyzed. Your proposal is due: Friday, November 7th Part B Begin testing early and often! The more experimentation you can do, the better! Every time that you do any research, test, alteration, keep record of this. You are required to provide a portfolio that outlines everything that you have done. This will provide anecdotal evidence that a proper investigation has been done. It is ok to take pictures of every step along the way to make things easier for yourself. Part C Share the results of your investigation with your instructor. You will need to hand in a typewritten lab report that outlines your problem, hypothesis, materials, procedure, observations/data, and a detailed conclusion. Your portfolio should also be included as part of this lab report. The lab report is due: Monday, December 8th Part D Share the results of your investigation with the class. Your findings should be shared with the class in a 5-minute block of time. You can do this in several different ways such as: a display, presentation, demonstration, video, or any other method that you clear with your instructor. Keep in mind that 5 minutes is not very long! Plan your presentation well so that you can stick to this time. This portion is due: Monday, December 15th
