Chapter 22: Making an Unoccupied Bed

PROCEDURE STEPS

1. Assists patient to chair; provides robe/blanket if needed.
2. Positions bed flat, raises to working height, lowers side
rails.
3. Folds and places clean bedspread and/or blanket on clean
area. Does not place clean linen on another patients bed or
furniture.
4. Removes all sheets and pillowcases; places in laundry
bag or hamper without contaminating uniform.
5. Does not place linen on the floor.
6. Removes and replaces linens on one side of the bed at a
time, to save steps.
7. Does not shake or fan linens.
8. For flat bottom sheet, allows at least 10 inches to hang
over at top and sides for tuck-in.
9. Smoothes wrinkles from bottom sheet.
10. If there is a draw sheet, tucks it and draws it tight.
11. Replaces waterproof pad if one is being used.
12. Places top sheet and bedspread along one side of the
mattress; tucks them in at the same time, using a mitered
corner. Then moves to opposite side of the bed.
13. After making both sides of the bed, at the head of the
bed, folds sheet down over bedspread.
14. At foot of the bed, makes a small pleat in the top sheet
and bedspread.
15. Fanfolds top sheet and bedspread back to the foot of the
bed.
16. Changes pillowcases: grasps middle of closed end of
pillowcase; reaches through pillowcase and grasps end of
pillow; pulls pillow back through pillowcase. Does not hold
pillow under arm or chin.
17. Assists client back to bed.
18. Places call signal within reach.
19. Places bedside table and over-bed table so they are
accessible to the client.
