Forming the present tenseRegular Verbs

There are three types of regular verbs:


-er verbs, like parler (to talk)
-ir verbs, like choisir (to choose)
-re verbs, like vendre (to sell)

In some cases before changing the stem some


letters may also change. For example y would
change into i in verbs ending in oyer and uyer
in the first, second and third person singular and
the third person plural.
Now try

In other cases, if a verb ends in c the c needs to


be changed into in front of the letter o of the
first person plural. For example:

If a verb stem ends in g the g needs to be changed


into ge in front of the letter o of the first person.

Forming the present tense


Irregular verbs

In French, the present tense is used to express all of the following:


I. Current actions and situations
Je suis fatigu.
I am tired.

Nous allons au march.


We are going to the market.
II. Habitual actions
Il va l'cole tous les jours.
He goes to school every day.
Je visite des muses le samedi.
I visit museums on Saturdays.

III. Absolute and general truths


La terre est ronde.
The earth is round.
L'ducation est importante.
Education is important.

And also:
IV. Actions which will occur immediately
J'arrive !
I'll be right there!
Il part tout de suite.
He is leaving right away.

V. Conditions, such as in si clauses

Si je peux, j'irai avec toi.


If I can, I will go with you.
Si vous voulez.
If you like.
