    A dairy farmer in Petaluma, California was fined $7,500 for polluting a nearby creek with manure from his 350 cows. Despite warnings, the farmer had done nothing to stop the manure from washing into the creek during rainstorms. Six other local dairy farms have also been fined recently for similar pollution problems. Many dairies in the area were originally built next to streams, but manure from the large number of animals now causes algal blooms that destroy fish and ecosystems. Other local farms have spent up to $150,000 to comply with pollution laws.
