One TLC is a school for homeless children in Stockton, California. One
TLC provides these students with an education and a strong emphasis on
literacy, math, and second language acquisition. They also provide these
children with breakfast, lunch, school supplies, clothing, personal toiletries,
medical and dental care. One site there are also counselors that assist the
children through traumas associated with neglect, abandonment, physical,
emotional, seual abuse, homelessness, hunger, physical and educational
issues. Stockton !nified school district only pays one teacher and the other is
paid through government grants. "ll the school supplies and equipment on
campus is paid through donations and grants. #ach day there is a van that goes
to the homeless shelter to pick up the students and bring them to the school and
take them back by the end of the day. There are only two classrooms in trailers
for $%&rd and 'th%(th grade, with only two classrooms, teachers and volunteer
aids to provide instruction to the students. )or physical activity the students have
a small patch of grass, a hula%hoop, a tetherball pole, a deflated basketball, and
a basketball hoop to play with. "fter going to the school this past semester to
provide the students with physical education, it became apparent that this school
was in need of help to incorporate physical education into their everyday
learning. "s a group we decided that in the community of Stockton, one TLC
needed our help the most. *y seeing how little equipment that these elementary
students have access to, we made it our goal to provide them with some
equipment and funds to purchase other means to be physically active.
+ith every advocacy plan there are some primary ob,ects for the plan,
with regards to our pro, ect, we established & main ob,ectives we wanted to reach.
The first was to raise enough money to give them enough financial support to
help fund a start to providing a new physical education program. The second
ob,ect was to kick start this physical education program by providing donated
sports equipment. The final ob,ect was to bring awareness to the community
about one TLC and their lack of physical activity. *y raising awareness for one
TLC, it will provide all children the equal opportunity to be physically active.
"fter collaborating ideas, our group came up with a few ways that would
be most beneficial in raising money. Our first idea in raising money was to create
an online fundraiser to obtain donations from as many sources as possible. +e
created an account on the website )undra-r, that allows people to simply go
online and donate using their credit card or a pay pal account. "t the end of the
deadline the website takes out ./ of the total amount that we have raised. +e
provided a picture of the kids in physical activity and a short description on what
our goal was by the end of the fundraiser. "ll of us shared the link on our
facebook, twitter, and emails to try to get the word out. )or the first week we had
only raised a total of ten dollars, and we weren0t sure if we were going to be
successful. "s time was running out, we started reminding people to donate
anything they could and in the end we came up with 123&.(4.
The net idea we had was to set up a donation table outside of a local
privately owned grocery store, 5odesto0s. 6n order to get the permission to do
this, we had to go to Lincoln Center 7anagement, and fill out paperwork stating
what we were going to do and read through a set of guidelines that we were
going to have to follow. Once we got permission we created a poster board,
bought incentives, and created flyers hoping that we would get a few donations in
a span of two hours. The first &8 minutes we were getting a ton of donations and
we were really pleased with the generosity of people. "t the end of our two hours
and after counting the money we were able to collect 1329. +e also made
donation ,ars to put in a local business as well as around the !niversity of the
5acific Campus. !nfortunately, they were not as successful as we would have
hoped, but they still make a contribution of 13&.'9.
Our final idea was an equipment drive where we would use our school
resources and ask our athletic department for ecess equipment. +hen going
around the athletic department and asking the different coaches for equipment,
we were able to get 33 water polo balls and 4 soccer balls. +e were also able to
collect a ton of equipment from a generous donation from friends and family we
also collected: 3 basketball, 3 volleyball, ' frisbees, 3 ball pump, 3' tall cones, ;2
small cones, and ' rubber bases. 6n total we were able to raise 1&(8, and all of
this equipment and hope to have made a lifelong impact on the future well being
of these kids.
The ma,ority of the work completed for this pro,ect was in groups or in ,oint
effort. #very member of the group helped contribute to raising money outside of
a local grocery store, 5odesto0s. 6t was also group collaboration when creating
the written advocacy plan and the 5re-i presentation. On 7onday, <une 2nd
everyone from the group participated in a field day, where we gave a ;8%minute
activity lesson for the children at OneTLC. #veryone had a role in spreading
awareness for the online fundraiser through social media means. +ithin the
group effort people had their own individual tasks to complete. 7elissa played a
primary role in the development of the online =)undra-r> which is an online
website where anyone can donate to the cause. She also had a role in helping
collect equipment for the equipment drive. "t the activity day 7elissa will put on
the power cat suit to bring en,oyment and fun to the activities. 7ark0s role was to
obtain the incentives and the decorations for the donations table in order to gain
peoples attention and also make the table look more appealing. "t the activity
day, 7ark0s role was to make a ;%. minute lesson pertaining to a beanbag toss
into buckets. Casey also played a main role in the equipment drive collecting
equipment. On the activity day, Casey0s role is to make a ;%. minute lesson
pertaining playing horseshoes. 5rior to the donation day at 5odesto0s Casey and
*rittni went to the Lincoln Center 7anagement to gain permission from
management to allow the donation table fundraiser. *rittni also played a primary
role in attracting attention to the online fundraiser through the social media
device twitter. She also was apart of collecting equipment for the equipment drive
with Casey and 7elissa. Casey and *rittni brought sports props for the
5odesto0s fundraiser table. *rittni0s role at the activity day was to create a ;%.
minute bowling lesson for the students. Tashia0s role was to distribute different
donations ,ars around local restaurants in Stockton and also different locations
around school. +hen the group went to 5odesto0s to ask for donations Tashia
created a poster board with a description of what the goal was, what oneTLC is,
and pictures of the kids in physical activity. Tashia0s role for the activity day at
oneTLC was to create a ;%. minute lesson for hula%hoops.
Through out our eperience of raising sufficient funds, obtaining
equipment and providing awareness, we have made a life long impact on the
school, staff and children. There were numerous obstacles we had to overcome
to make this pro,ect possible. +e all learned what worked and did not work and if
we had the chance to do it over what we would change. This was such an
ama-ing eperience for us who have called Stockton our home for the past four
years and to have helped make an impact in the community is more than we
could have asked for. +e would like to thank everyone who has helped us
through this ,ourney and donated to make our cause possible for OneTLC.
