1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 CULTURE
The term culture is difficult to describe, as it is term used quit broad. Its about the processes of
meaning production and circulation. So the term is used in trying to make sense of reality, so culture
describes the ways of life.
1.2 POPULAR CULTURE
Popular culture is often media culture. It also exist out of different elements:
It is liked by many
It is considered as low culture
Industrially produced
It is the culture of common people
Folk culture: from the past
1.3 ON THE NOTION OF QUALITY?
Quality is hard to define. Tastes differ (it is influenced by gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, etc.) But
also Social Pressure has on the quality of certain products of popular Culture (watching a soap that is
considered junk by friends, so you dont tell that you see it, or claim to be an ironic viewer).
1.3.1 QUALITY: HIERARCHIES

What s good?
There are no fixed criteria;
It is not the same for everyone: taste;
It is not completely individual: social;
It is not natural: learned;
It is not the same everywhere: culturally specific;
It is not the same all the time: historically specific.
The distinction between high and low culture is blurred:

High culture in popular culture
High culture is not exclusively high class
Less stigma around popular culture
But:
One way process?
Daily uses of hierarchy
Take popular culture seriously
Avoid easy dismissal
Formulate specific & appropriate criteria
Make distinctions within popular culture
Audiences make distinctions
Do research on Production, text and reception of a populare culture product.
Producer
Professional quality
Fulfilling makers intentions
Text
Genre
Form
Content
Moral
Viewer
Ratings: important, but avoid populism
Appreciation: qualitative research
Problem: no absolute criteria, so relativism?
Academic writing: fear of quality judgement
Discuss and argue, make criteria explicit
Reflect on position and power
