Lesson Objective
The objective of the lesson is what students will be able to do as they leave your class. For this objective, use the Standards of Learning (SOL) to say what you want to focus on. You can find the SOLs at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/ look on the right of the screen for the subjects and go from there.
*The teacher is modeling the steps on the projector. *Use the Occupational Outlook Handbook (www.bls.gov/oco ) online to do a search for a career of interest. Find the annual median pay. *Use online resources to search for an apartment. (www.apartmentguide.com) *Use online resources to search for a vehicle. (www.autotrader.com ) *Use the car payment calculator to estimate the monthly payment. (http://www.carmax.com/enus/car-payment-estimatescalculator/default.html ) *Use the car insurance calculator (http://money.msn.com/autoinsurance/auto-insurance-quotes.aspx ) to estimate insurance. *The students will open Excel and create an budget by inserting the following information in the cells: 1. Cell A1: Budget 2. Cell A3: Income 3. Cell A5: Rent

Cell A16: Savings 14. Cell B3: Enter the amount of your monthly net income 15. Cell B5: Enter the amount of your rent 16. Cell B6: Enter the amount of your monthly car payment 17. Cell B7: Enter the amount of your car insurance 18. Cell B8: Enter 200 19. Cell B9: Enter 300 20. Cell B10: Enter 120 21. Cell B11: Enter 150 22. Cell B12: Enter 120 23. Cell B13: Enter 200 24. Cell B14: Have the students determine the formula needed to calculate total expenses (answer: =SUM(B5..B14) ) 25. Cell B16: Have the students determine the formula needed to calculate the savings (answer: =SUM(B14,-B3) 26. Click on the letter B at the top of the column. 27. In the home tab, clock on format and then format cells 28. Click on currency 29. Make sure you have two decimal places and the dollar sign selected. Click ok *If the student does not have a minimum of $200.00 in savings, they must go back and find a car and/or apartment that cost less money. TLW accurately enter all information in the cells. TLW also budget so that they have a savings of $200.00 per month.
