Materials
Welcome to the Greenhouse book (e-version) iPad iDiary for Kids App KWL Chart
Directions
1. Start the lesson by gathering the students on the rug in the front of the room. Read the next 6 pages of the book, Welcome to the Greenhouse. There should be a marker to where we left off from yesterday. 2. Go to the KWL Chart and fill it out based on the pages that were read today. (K-What I already know, W-What I want to know, L-What I have learned). Have a quick discussion with the students what went on in these 6 pages. 3. Send the students back to their desks when finished. 4. Go over the content from yesterday: a. Ask them what layer of the Rainforest they learned about (Emergent layer) b. Ask them to describe the Emergent Layer (Waxy-like leaves, has the most sunlight, tallest layer) c. Ask them where the layer is located (top layer) d. Ask them what animals live in that layer (sloth, harpy eagle, Macaw, blue-morpho butterfly)
5. Explain to the students that they will be writing at least 5 sentences on what they learned from yesterday. They will be using the iDiary for Kids App. 6. Project the iPad screen on the projector in the front of the room to show the students what they are to be doing. Show them what the iDiary App looks like. 7. Pass out the iPads. Make sure each student get the number assigned to them. Have them access the App and to then click on the journal icon on the top right hand side of the app. This will take them to the journal page. From there, they need to click the draw button on the right side to write out their sentences. Remind them that they are to write about what they know on the Emergent Layer, including the plants and animals that live in that layer. They can write more than 5 sentences if they would like. 8. When they are finished, the teacher needs to check their work to make sure it is written neatly, punctuated correctly, and their sentences accurately reflect the Emergent Layer.
