Formula #040605-02 Saltpeter & Sugar Solid Rocket Propellant
This is another simple and relatively safe model rocket propellant that is made by mixing together, in the percentages shown, powdered potassium nitrate (saltpeter), confectioners (powdered) sugar and powdered sulfur. For proper control of the final result, the components must be measured by weight. The weight/weight formula therefore is as follows 1. Potassium Nitrate, powder..............63% 2. Sugar, Confectioners......................27% 3 Sulfur, powdered..............................10% An actual working formula for 1lb of this mixture would then be as follows: 1. Potassium Nitrate, powdered ......... 285.8 g 2. Sugar, Confectioners ........... ..........122.5 g 3. Sulfur, powdered ........ ......................45.4 g All the ingredients must be ground and sifted separately to insure there are no lumps and that each is in its finest powdered form. Once powdered and weighed they can be mixed together in a dry container by simply shaking or stirring with a wooden dowel. Use extreme caution since this mixture is extremely flammable and can be easily ignited by a flame or spark.
