Cavitationoccurswhenacentrifugalpumpstartspushingwateroutofthepumpfasterthanitcanpull (lift)itinduetoexcessflowtofartotherightofitscurve(pasttheBESTEFFICIENCYPOINTorBEPof thecurve),watertoohot,suctionpipingproblems(restrictionsaroundmaxflowRATE),NPSHtoolow and/oranycombination.Seeadditionalproblemspullingfromshallowtanksandhotwater. FillingASystemWithAPump Whenthishappens,creatingalowpressureareathepump,attemptsto"stretch"thewaterattheinside theeyeoftheimpeller.Withoutatmosphericpressuretoholdthetwogases(hydrogenandoxygen) togetherthatmakeupthewater,thegasesexpand,likeblowingupaballoon,intotinyvaporbubbles. Thesebubbles,athighvelocityduetohighflow,quicklytraveltotheoutsideoftheimpellerwheretheyare quicklyrecompressedbythepumpsdischargepressureintotheiroriginalform.Theforceofthesudden implosionislikebeingshotwithatinyshotgun,blastingawaythemetalintinyroundpieces.Whenthis firststarts,itsoundslikeanerratichissingsoundandprogresstosoundinglikegravelrunningthroughthe pump.Pumpspullingfromashallowtankmayexperienceavacuumonthesuctionatthepumpattoo lowadischargepressurefromexcessflow.Thehotterthewater,themorepressureyouneedWater VaporPressure/TemperatureChart. Imaginetakingarubberband,stretchingitoutasfarasitwillgothensuddenlyreleasingitbackintoits originalform.ThePOPyoufeelonyourfingertipsisthesameeffect.Thedischargepressureisusually erraticandtheremaybeexcessvibrationinthepiping. Hereisanexamplebelowofcavitationonahighspeedpressurerecorderinafirepumpcontroller.This isfromaMasterControlSystemsPR4001highspeedpressurerecorder.ThefirstshotbelowisZOOM level1,thesecondshotisZOOMlevel2.Thepumpwasenergizedwithrecirculationvalveopentoofar. Thepumpisrunningatapressurewaytoolowatthebottomuntilstabilizedandoperatedwhereit's supposedtobeseeFLOWTESTatthetopright.Thepressureisjumpingupanddownseveraltimesat theCAVITATIONpoint.Atthebottomthereisnotenoughpressuretolubricatethesealssotheseals burneduponthenew300HPfirepump,thatswhyIwascalled.AfterafewquestionsandIfoundoutthe contractorrelocatedtheflowmeter.Thefirealarmpanelandcontrolleralarmhistoryandthegraphs belowconfirmedmysuspicionthatthepumpwasturnedbackonwiththetwoflowmetervalvesopentoo farseethebottomofthegraph.Runningthepumpatthebottomwithnodischargepressureandthe suctioninavacuumburnedthesealpackingoutofthenewpump. ThethirdshotisfromaGrundfospumpsystemwithseveralTEEsandelbowsinthesuctionpiping elevatedatthesuctioninletsimilartothedrawingbelowit.Whenthesuctionpipingwascorrected,the problemwentaway.Thepumpspulledfromanelevatedstoragetankwithapproximately6feetofwater available.Thesuctionpressureatthepumpswasa5erraticvacuumwhenrunning,resultinginthe erraticdischargereadings.Vaporbubblesrisetothetopofthepump,airlockingtheupperimpellers, reducingchurnpressureandtheabilitytoshutdownautomatically.Theerraticdischargepressurekept restartingresettingtheruntimersandthepumpsoverheatingatminimumandnoflow.
