Over the past several decades, the
definition of asset management has moved
to a focus on deriving value from assets.
But what does that really mean? How do
we define and measure value? And how do
we relate value to performance?
Participants in the roundtable will be
challenged to address a series of
statements, which express questions,
conflicts, challenges and opportunities
around value and performance. This is
an evolving exercise, first delivered in the
U.S. in July 2013. Participants will have an
opportunity to take the supporting materials
home and use them to further their own
discussions.

have access to a kit of tools that they
can competently use to address 80% of

one such toolkit and seeks to answer this
question based on input from the group.

Community of Practice
Whether it is through insurance premiums savings,
maintaining credit ratings, reducing costs or improving
share price, the return on investment from effective asset
management can be substantial. Therefore, sharing
stories about successful asset management through
videos, publications and presentations is vital in informing
stakeholders about these benefits.
Many of our success stories come from government and
state utility organisations; for example Gladstone Power
Station and NSW Finance EAM (see below) are among a
few. For our most recent government sector project, the
Asset Management Council is preparing a white paper
to build a Community of Practice (CoP) for the Australian
government sector. The proposed CoP would act as a
gathering point for sharing industry-related information
and strategies. By having multiple government sector CoP
groups across the country, information can be linked and
exchanged easily. The overall goals of the program are to:
Identify, gather and seek agreement on asset

management requirements
Provide a forum for cooperation of activities where asset

management adds value to existing initiatives

Identify opportunities for collaborating on strategic and

technical projects
Provide an informal point of contact for addressing

specific benefits that affect multiple organisations

Further develop the Asset Management Body of

Knowledge
The implementation of this initiative would lead to improved
asset management from government bodies, as well as a
significant return on investment.
In addition to this the Asset Management Council endorsed
and helped the New South Wales Government launch a
comprehensive set of processes for their Enterprise Asset
Management (EAM) program, as aligned with the International
Asset Management Standards (ISO 55000) series, and with
the Asset Management Councils Capability Delivery model.
With more than $260 billion in physical assets, the NSW
Government is now taking a smarter approach to managing
the entire life cycle of their assets. Instead of solely focusing on
the acquisition and maintenance stages of asset management,
the EAM initiative increases focus on the planning and renewal
stages as well. Overall, the processes will help reduce waste
and improve asset management effectiveness.
