Introduction to Gearing

This course begins with an introduction to gearing covering world market, different gear types, in addition to basic nomenclature and relations (3 hrs). Gear trains will also be presented by reviewing simple and compound gear trains as well as planetary gear trains (2 hrs). Non-circular gears will be introduced along with novel applications (3 hrs) related to automotive industry (Internal Combustion engine torque balancing and coordinated steering). Basic AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association) ratings will be used to evaluate the bending and fillet stresses of spur cylindrical gears for a particular application (3 hrs). Helical gears, worm, spiral-bevel, and hypoid gears will be introduced and discussed in a generic sense (1 hr). The software package Delgear will be introduced and an example will be presented where the demonstrates how to take a gear print and produce the appropriate software input parameters to run the Delgear software (1 hr). The Delgear software will be available for download and will demonstrate its use interactively.
