As part of America's commitment to the welfare of the Burmese people, the U.S. government has
contributed a total of $74 million in humanitarian assistance to victims of Cyclone Nargis. This
assistance, including food aid, has enabled them to begin resuming their lives.
The United States recently donated 16,620 metric tons of rice to communities affected by Cyclone
Nargis. The estimated value of the rice is USD 16 million. This shipment of rice arrived in Burma in
February and is enabling the World Food Programme (WFP) to meet critical food needs in the most
vulnerable Delta communities.
Including the current rice donation, the United States has donated food assistance totaling over USD 28
million to cyclone victims through WFP. This has included 3,200 tons of oil, 3,600 tons of pulse, and
300 tons of a corn-soya blend.
On April 1, 2009, Chargé d’Affaires Larry Dinger and Embassy staff traveled to several villages in the
Delta with WFP Country Director Chris Kaye to observe the distribution of the donated rice and talk
with beneficiaries about their priorities for recovery.
WFP estimates USG rice will reach 350,000 beneficiaries. Some of the rice is being distributed under
food-for-work projects managed by cooperating NGO partners to support the rebuilding of roads, dikes,
and water ponds.
