Not only that, the average price of the 217 transactions that took place in April 2013 increased to 7.4%. Its hard to argue numbers like this! Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, while sailing under the flag of Spain, was the first European to set eyes upon the barren hills and plains of what was to be Rancho San Pedro. He is believed to be the first European to explore the California coast. He was either of Portuguese or Spanish background, although his origins remain unclear. In June 1542 Cabrillo led an expedition in two ships of his own design and construction from the west coast of what is now Mexico. He landed on September 28th at San Diego Bay, claiming what he thought was the Island of California for Spain. Cabrillo and his crew landed on San Miguel Island, one of the Channel Islands, then

Two points along the coast bear very old names. In 1793 Captain George Vancouver, who had been commissioned by King George III of England to explore and chart the Pacific coast, sighted a very conspicuous promontory. He named it Point Vincente, after the friar Padre Vincente Santa Maria stationed at the MIssion San Buenaventura. The spelling of the name was revised from Vincente to Vicente in the mid 1920s. (The United States Government established a lighthouse on Point Vicente in 1875, and the present structure was built in 1926). Sailing a little further south along the coast, Vancouver came to a second point which he named Point Fermin, in honor of Padre Fermin Francisco de Lausen, head of all the California missions. The vessels that traded at San Pedro anchored at a point on the northwest side of San Pedro, slightly northeast of Point Fermin, off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes. Though later known as Timms Point, this anchorage was first called Sepulveda Landing. Between Point Fermin and Point Vicente lies Portuguese Bend, named for Portuguese whalers who used the cove for a rendezvous and a whaling station. Portuguese Bend was also a smugglers hideaway. Spain limited the number of ships which could dock in San Pedro, and exacted stiff fines including forfeiture of property and death to those who violated the edict.

Steve Lazar has designed some of the most innovative and coveted homes in the South Bay. A native since 1972 and an avid surfer, Lazar has always been inspired by seaside architecture and boats. In fact, he says many clients describe his work as having a nautical nuance. Some of his very first design work was drawing sailing yacht plans. I had a fascination with boats since my father first bought a boat when I was five years old, he explains. What I find fascinating is how you had to cram so many things into such a tight little place. Designing in neighborhoods where space is limited, like Manhattan Beach, means this fascination comes in handy. We have to jam so many things in the tightest spaces here, he jokes, I see the challenge, and slowly but surely the challenge becomes an opportunity, and it starts to become a possibility, and turns into a solution were proud of. Lazars designs focus on an efficient use of space. Instead of designing something thats just a piece of artwork and so fantastic looking, but then when you go to build it its totally cost prohibitive, I try to be more efficient and effective when I put on my design hat. Design and Build philosophy is an all-encompassing practice whereby Lazar is responsible from start to finish for the design and building of the home. As a builder, I think with my design hat, and as a designer I think with my building hatIts a linear relationship instead of a triangular relationship between a builder, a homeowner and an architect. Theres one less person in the communication line. Lazar notices that South Bay clients have several main needs: functional space, separation of space, and a feeling of openness while maintaining intimacy. A rubix cube of things, he says. Play rooms need to be kept separate from the parents rooms, and the common rooms need to be big, but not so vast that they lose intimacy; a balance needs to be struck to create a big space in a small environment. Lazar lives and bases his business in Manhattan Beach; he went to high school in Palos Verdes, and though he builds in other areas of Los Angeles, he loves creating for his local clients. I love the beach cities because I love how close I am to everything I care about. My parents, my kids schools, the Toyota Sports center where my kids play hockey, the surf, Mammoth... LAX is close. This is just a great town. In the coming year, Lazar will move towards developing new homes in the South Bay as part of a new partnership; hell still create custom designs for local clients, but his business is expanding and so are his creative endeavors.

Cruise down the Strand today, and try to picture the landscape back in the years 1988 through 1902. Thats when the Los Angeles Pacific Railway provided an intricate and necessary transportation system, with service between the Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Venice, and Inglewood areas. In 1903, the LAP extended the popular line from the area now known as Playa del Rey through Manhattan Beach and all the way south to Redondo Beach. These double tracks were just west of our Strand where the bike path is today. All of this was well before the time of the Model-T and paved streets, so the Los Angeles Pacific train was the prime transportation for our area. In historical documents, George L. Allen, Sr., a South Bay resident, recalled that the South Bay line was originally narrow gauge. But in 1907, the LAP became a standard gauge line, and with this upgrade came much larger cars, capable of holding many more passengers. While the line typically used a 200-car setup, on weekends and holidays, the big 700s were used. The first cars were called, green cars and were used primarily for carrying passengers. become economically unviable. history, with old-time residents recalling those glory days. all the way south to Redondo Beach.

THE LAP RAILWAY COMPANY MERGED WITH THE PACIFIC ELECTRIC IN 1910. THE RED CARS OPERATED FROM 1905 TO 1940, AND COVERED 1,164 MILES OF TRACK WHICH MADE IT THE LARGEST ELECTRIC RAILROAD IN THE WORLD. IN 1910, A PERSON COULD RIDE THE RAILWAY FROM REDONDO BEACH TO DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR.
The subsequent red cars assisted with the growing transportation needs of reported that the 1903 addition of the trolley was generally responsible for the first real estate boom along our South Bay beaches. Imagine being able to hop on a trolley car, much like San Franciscos current trolley system, to get from one beach community to the next. It was during this time that land for sale at the beach was promoted by enthusiastic developers who offered free transportation on the Santa Fe or L.A. Pacific along with a free lunch. The red cars continued to run during the 1930s until growing competition from buses and private autos caused the line to Finally, the rail line that famously ran along the beach was completely shut down in 1940. Grading and construction reportedly took several months, but later, demolition of the track took place at the rate of a mile per day. Eventually, the trolley wires and fixtures were completely taken down. Nearly everyone remembers those old, clunky desks they had to sit in throughout school as a kid. Derlot Editions designer Alexander Lotersztain sure does, and thats why he created the sleek, modern and portable solitaire workstation a few years ago. The workstation, made entirely from plywood, can sit indoors or outdoors and be used to enjoy a cup of coffee, help read a book and everything else in-between. Observing where technology is going, I noticed that the workspace has become smaller and more compact. Desks are getting smaller, Lotersztain said. So its literally you and your laptop or iPad. Lotersztain came up with the idea simply by observing the things around him and the people in it, and designing solutions for them. Many people comment on how elegant it is. I think the approach to the design is making the piece as minimalistic as possible, Lotersztain said of the workstation. The design definitely takes into considerationergonomics and sustainability. While most of the interest in the solitaire workstation has been in Australia, Lotersztain says the company is beginning to get interest in the piece from people in the United States. Much of that is because of its functional, yet modern design that can fit almost anywhere and be used for almost any purpose. I think its a very unique, compact and elegant solution for contemporary living spaces, said Lotersztain.

How did you get involved in the wine business and open Friends of the Vine?

It started out with just a few people coming in during the week and about 10 or so on the
weekend to word of mouth spreading and 20 people crowding around the bar. It became our living room. This place is all about people. We are all family and community related. You have everyone in here. You have people come in who are living check to check and people who are literally billionaires. That is what makes it so great. In here, no one cares. How does this place mesh with the South Bay community?
People are really enjoying blends like Cabernet Zinfandels and such, just fun blends that really take the edge off. Pinot Noirs are still solid even after the movie Sideways. Im really grapes and its about $20. liking La Storia right now, which is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Montepulciano
What do you look for when you decide to carry a wine in the shop?
You can have an idea, but the thing you cant write about is the quality of people that come in. We dont advertise, but it just kind of took off because of the people and the product. Every single day we have people who live five minutes from the shop coming in
It is all about value. Whether it is $5 or $300, people still want value. People dont care about the flash around here, they still want value for their budget. I also think about how fun it is. I want people to try new varieties of what they already like, to get outside of the buy a wine I recommend. The first few years, customers would come in and tell us what they wanted, now most of our regulars buy what we recommend. How has Friends of the Vine evolved since you first opened?

Weve had quite a few celebrities come and hang out and even a few funny phone calls. One of the weirdest nights was when Jean-Claude Van Damme came in. He came in and
