Notes: To type hold down and press Release NOTES keys, then press Alt Code The backtick character is up at the top left of your keyboard. In some programs some of these shortcuts may not work. In this case you can either: (a) copy and paste the character from another document; (b) in Windows, use Character Map (in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to find it; (c) if you know a translation of the word you want to type, type that into an online translator (e.g. Google Translate) and copy the character or the word from the resultant back-translation; (d) type the word with an unaccented letter into a search engine. It should throw up some pages with the word correctly spelled, from which you can copy and paste; (e) use the Alt codes. To do this, you need to use the numbers on your keypad to the right hand side (on a desktop computer) or those printed in blue or some other hue on the letter keys (on a laptop). Proceed as follows: 1. You need to have Num Lock ON on your keyboard. Num Lock is a toggling key like Shift Lock, and displays a little LED when its on. 2. Hold down the Alt key. 3. On a laptop, youll also need to hold down the Function key, Fn, while typing the code. 4. With these one or two keys depressed, type the code on your keypad (e.g., to get , type 164). 5. When you release the Alt key, the character you crave should magically appear. Many other special characters can be produced in similar ways, and the necessary information is easily discoverable using your favourite search engine.
