The 8th Word Wonder! Speech & Language Therapy Blog: Using Story-Grammar-Marker to Teach Social Skills Story Grammar Marker, Grammar Chart, Workspace Ideas, Language Therapy Activities, Slp Activities, Story Retell, Slp Ideas, School Slp, Speech Path

Last week our district was fortunate enough to have a speaker from Social Thinking come to do a presentation for our staff. The title of our training was "Implementing Social Thinking Concepts and Vocabulary". I was already familiar with many of the ideas discussed since I own several of Michelle Garcia Winner's publications, but it was nice to hear someone talk about the concepts rather than reading about them. The one thing that I took away from the presentation was an idea that I thought…

I started using Story Grammar Marker right after ASHA and so far I LOVE it! While at ASHA I got to chat with Maryellen Rooney Moreau, the creator of Story Grammar Marker and MindWing Concepts. She told me that they had just released an app version of their Story Grammar Marker tool. Once I heard that I knew I had to take it for a test drive! MindWing Concepts was very generous and provided me with a copy of the app so that I could tell you all about it :) In this app students get to a Start…

One of the ideas I took away from ASHA was using the Story Grammar Marker tool by MindWing Concepts with the Social Thinking curriculum. If you aren't familiar with Story Grammar Marker ( SGM ) you can see a post I wrote about it HERE. It is multi sensory tool to help kids with their narrative and expository language. It makes those abstract tasks, like summarizing for example, a little more concrete and 'doable' for my kids. So it would make sense that this tool would help my students with…

So my new favorite thing this week is a little wonder named Braidy. I found out about him when I started my new job (one down on the 2011 list) and his whole purpose in life is to help students improve their oral language abilities. Braidy is so great because he is a puppet for the little ones but the strategies that Braidy incorporates can be implemented with older kids. Here he is: Essentially, Braidy is a type of Story Grammar Marker (Braidy look-alikes can be created very easily - just…

I've been using the The Story Grammar Marker for about five years now and I just love it! SGM was developed by MindWing Concepts, Inc. Please check out their site at http://www.mindwingconcepts.com/. This is a well developed product! I use it to facilitate expressive and receptive language skills in students through literature. Sometimes we use the SGM to recap stories we have read and sometimes we use it to develop our own stories. I used this in my Mysteries of Harris Burdick lesson. This…

Hi Friends! My love affair with Story Grammar Marker continues. Seriously, people. For my kiddos, it just works. And for me, it works because I have 50+ kids of all ages and abilities levels. And I use Story Grammar Marker with them all. Every. Last. One. While I’ve done several posts in the past on […]

This Summer I took a training on a wonderful program called Story Grammar Marker, or SGM. SGM is a program that helps children with comprehension, retelling, and expressive language. I am using SGM for my inquiry project this year. I want to know how using this program will help my language impaired students (with a focus on first graders). Meet Braidy (named appropriately because he is a giant braid!) The big green puff ball at the top represents the characters, the star represents the…
