The collection of 154 precious and semiprecious stones was donated to the museum in 1869 by Rev. Chauncy Hare Townshend. It is arranged by hardness. In the center is, of course, the diamond (in all colours); a pearl is on the far right. Interspersed are sapphires, tourmalines, garnets, and more.

All the stones were mounted as rings before they came to the Museum, however they were not all intended to be worn. Some of the stones, such as the two rings set with apophyllite and euclase, were much too fragile for practical use.
