Two Trees: an exercise in reduction linocut

These two prints by Rosie are good examples of some of the elements of our print-making which were on show at the Gardens Gallery. They are both linocuts made by the reduction method, which allows us to create multi-coloured images from the same block by re-carving it between each layer of differently coloured ink which makes up the finished image. After each layer was printed, I pulled out my carving tools and carved the next layer of the print from this one block. The block was slowly carved away until just the last layer remained. This method is called reduction printing, and it produces a limited edition! I can’t reprint this piece again even if I wanted to. This limited edition releases TODAY, March 29th, at 5 pm west coast time. I’m putting this post together for my upcoming Woodblock Class at Zea Mays Printmaking (Feb. 23-24, 2013) but by all means read it if it interests you. I was only required to do 3 layers but since I'm insane and can never do just the bare minimum, I did five 😎 If I had to guess, I'd say I probably put upwards of 35 hours into this.
