A Second Look at National School Counseling Week

I have long been of the opinion that School Counselors should be appreciated or celebrated during National School Counseling Week. I felt foolish doing cutesy little things for teachers and trying to bring recognition to myself. But after reflecting on my recent, disturbing and enlightening, visit with my state legislators (more about that in another post) I have come to the conclusion I was wrong. Classroom counseling lesson about self-esteem: positive/negative thought cycles and "not feeding your monster". One rice container is marked "negative" and one is marked "positive"; students are instructed to talk to the rice for 2 weeks. They may only say these kinds of words to each container of rice. Then, we compare/discuss. Words carry energy and affect the water in the rice (spoil or keep it fresh). Our bodies are 50-65% water...make the connection!
