Photographer Ivan McClellan has spent nearly a decade documenting Black rodeo culture, which has long been overshadowed by popular depictions of cowboys.

African American cowgirls do exist. Each year hundreds of Black women travel across the United States to compete in ladies steer wrestling, breakaway roping, bull riding, barrel racing, and other rodeo competitions — many while holding down full-time jobs. The book comprises 118 photos by Ivan McClellan, who's spent nearly a decade documenting the lives of the Black rodeo community.

Every year, the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo travels the country, celebrating the legacy of the black cowboy. We brought some of the coolest Western-inspired fashion to the tour's Oakland stop and met the cowboys and cowgirls carrying on the tradition.
