Halloween Card File

Hello friends!

I love making idea-ology Halloween Card Files each year (this is probably my 3 or 4th one!). This year's Card File is a bit different, in that I was inspired by two Stampers Anonymous stamp sets: Deconstructed (CMS489) and Tidbits (CMS488) that came to market mid summer. I was absolutely intrigued by the idea of a very freeform card file with ripped Halloween Collage Paper and ink that was loose and watery.

Starting on Monday, October 7th I will be sharing instructions and
images of the cards that make up this Halloween Card File.

There are seven types of cards and pockets in the file. Each type has three examples. In this series of daily posts, we will go over all 21 cards that fill the Card File. Prep day will start on Monday the 7th and we will continue daily from there. If you don't want to follow along, you can come back to the blog at your leisure to see the entire series, then work at your own pace.

Here is a preview of many of the cards you can make. You can use what you have on hand or you can use the list and links below to grab a few things you might need.

The only thing I can think of that is not on the list below is the 1/4" rayon ribbon. I buy it on Etsy from RibbonsByZipperstop and dye it myself with Distress Ink. The ribbon (or really any other product) can always be substituted for another of a similar size.

Here is a list of what I used to create my card file. You are welcome use whatever product or stamps you have on hand.

The Dead of Night

 Hello Friends,

I have a step-out tutorial over on the Ranger Projects Page today.  I used lots of Ranger products (listed below) to create this Halloween panel.  It is an easy project to learn how you use each of these stains and pastes.  Halloween idea-ology is also a feature because...well, it is just so good this year!  The bat wings added to the boy are my favorite.  I love how it looks like he's either guarding the gate or pushing them open to allow you in!

Dearly Departed

Hello Friends.

With the Stampers Anonymous Halloween release, all I want to think about is making Halloween things!  This was such a fun and easy make.  The new Damask Crest Stencil was not only the catalyst for the project but a real showstopper!  Follow along and I will show you how I created it.

I used a small Etcetera Tag for the substrate.  I used Collage Medium and a sheet of Backdrops paper from the Halloween pack to cover the front of the tag.  I added a layer of Collage Medium over the top of the paper to seal it before moving on to the next step.

Once the Etcetera Tag was ready to go, I used the new Damask Crest Layering Stencil and Distress Grit-Paste Crypt to add a large textured image on the tag.
It looks so cool over that background!
It will dry a darker grey so beware of the changing color during the drying process.
I also added a partial secondary crest on the right side to balance everything out.
Now you can see the Grit-Paste is starting to dry and change color.
At this stage, I used the Archival Ink in Black Soot and the new Exquisite floral to stamp the edges of the tag.  I just kept turning the stamp to get different flowers and leaves.
Next, I sprayed Mica Stain, Iron Gate over the top of the the stencil pattern.  Because the tag was sealed with Collage Medium before I added the Grit-Paste, the tag resists the stain.  The Grit-Paste is porous, even when dry, so the Mica Stain soaks right in.  Just blot up the excess ink.
By darkening the Grit-Paste, I created more contrast to I could use Foundry Wax Statue over the top.
  1. Shake till you hear the mixing ball.
  2. Squeeze out about a dime size circle.  The Foundry Wax will immediately become creamy.  It also dries quickly so you need to work fast.
  3. Use you finger to lightly rub the wax across the surface hitting the high points (you can also use a paintbrush to add the wax).  Add as much as you wish, but don't cover up all the black you created with the Iron Gate Spray.
4. Use an embossing gun to heat the Foundry Wax, which will cause it to turn a shiny very quickly. The Foundry Wax is now permanent and cannot be sanded or removed in any way.
5. Use a Walnut Stain Distress Crayon to scribble directly over the Foundry Wax to create another layer of grit.
I mean, look at that!!
I also used the script stamp from Exquisite to add more detail in the empty places.  I did not use a block. I just stamped at random, pressing only portions of the stamp.
Once the stamping was done. I sprayed over portions of the tag with Decayed Mica Spray (my true love).
I created a palette of Distress Ink colors.
Then, using a water brush, I colored flowers I had previously stamped on Mixed media cardstock.
I sprayed them with Decayed Mica Stain as well because, well, why not?
I set these aside to dry while I get to coloring the Paper Doll.
To color on the Paper Doll image (from the Halloween pack), I used OXIDE ink and a water brush to color the background.
Spritzed the card with a little water then dried with a heat tool.
As the ink dries, it will change color...still vibrant but not this vibrant.
I mounted the card to the tag with foam squares, then added the "WICKED" saying from the Halloween Baseboard pack.  NOTE: You will see that I change my mind on the saying when I add the Fringe...so the saying is longer across the Paper Doll image.
We have Fringe made from real crepe paper this year and I love it.  Super sturdy so it can be crumpled and unrolled to get really fluffy Fringe.
The fringe is wide so I cut some off each side of the stitched center so it would not be as wide.  Then I took Gold Mixative and squeezed some out in a long line on a deli sheet.
This made it very easy to dip in the ends of the fringe to get the hint of gold metallic.
I folded it in half along the stitching line, then fluffed up the ends.
Add Collage Medium right above the saying, then push the Fringe into it.
Add the clock face, also from the Baseboard pack, to the left side, slipping it under the Paper Doll. I did add clock hands to the Baseboard Face.
Slip the colored flowers underneath as well.

I added some Droplets next to the layered flowers for a bit of shine.
The black rayon seam binding was sprayed with Fortune Teller Mica Stain.  Then tied the ribbon to a Vintage Clip that I had previously painted black and added Foundry Wax to.
Love how the purple shows us so well over black!
I just love how the Foundry Wax looks of the Grit-Paste!

I still have a couple Halloween idea-ology projects to share - hopefully I can find the time to blog again before the end of the week. Funny, I'm blogging about Halloween but there is Christmas all over my work table!
Now carry on,

The Haunted Circus

 Hello Friends,

The idea-ology Halloween Saturday Live was so exciting! I loved seeing all the projects by the Makers.  So many great ideas and loads of inspiration!

Today I am sharing a tutorial for the Haunted Circus!  This was a fun one to make (and pretty darn easy), so follow along and I'll show you how I did it!

I used the largest of the Square Vignette Boxes for this project (5.5 x 5.5"). I covered the inside of the box with a print from the Worn Wallpaper Halloween pack.  The inside edges will never be seen so I just put the paper on the back of the box.  I did cover the outside of the box with a different print from the Worn Wallpaper pack (you will see that print at the end of this post).

Tiny Lights - You are looking at the top of the box, but this was the best way to show it.  I used green from the pack (it comes with one green and one purple).
  1. Drill a hole in the top left corner.
  2. Thread the lights from the back, into the box.
  3. Cut the ends off a large craft stick to fit the box (no need to paint the craft stick black like I did).
  4. Wrap the lights in a LONG diagonal pattern around the stick.  Wrap, going up the craft stick, then turn and wrap back down, crossing over the wires (sounds harder than it is). If you wrap this way, you are able to get all the lights on one side of the craft stick.
  5. Add two 3D foam squares to the back of the stick and adhere to the top of the box.
Another view...
And with the lights lit up!
I used this long piece from the Worn Wallpaper pack to start the layering process.  In the end, this piece will not show, but will give strength to the other pieces.  In theory, you could just cut a strip of cardstock instead of using up this piece.  Up to you.
Color the curtains with Distress Crayon.  Peeled Paint was used for the curtains.
Use Design Tape or paper to cover the floor.  You will not see too much in the end.  This black crackle tape from the Design Tape pack is a favorite.  I have used it so much this season, I think I might need another pack to get me through!
I also added another tape at the bottom (from the same pack) that says, "Orders attended to day or night".
I used 1/4" Scor-Tape on three sides of the box to secure the two curtain pieces.  The curtains are from the Layers pack which is thicker ephemera.  Perfect for the front of the box.
The stage is now set, sorta speak, so now we can add some embellishments!
To build up the stage front, I used scalloped Etcetera Trims.  The trims come 4, 5, and 6" long.  I both widths of two 6" long trims and cut them with my tonic scissors to fit (about 5.5").
You can see here that once they were cut to length, I glued the two pieces together and painted them black.  Doubling them up helped to stabilize the trim once glued to the vignette box because it is wider at the base.
I could have used them just like this, but I decided it need more interest.  I had the idea to use the hinges that are part of the 2022 Sticker Book Curiosities. I added a hinge to each side of the trim.  Notice that the hinge just covers the shorter layer of the scallop trim?  It also hangs over the trim at the bottom - don't cut that off!  That will help with stability once it is glued to the box.
Here is the top piece with both hinges added.
I added the, "For Skill and Amusement Only" sign from the Baseboard pack to the center, between the hinges.  Let it dry in place before adding the trim to the top of the box.
So here is what it looks like when you add the trim to the top.  The bottom of each hinge and the baseboard sign all cover the FRONT top edge of the box.  Make sure you not only add Collage Medium under the trim but also behind the bottom edge of the hinge and sign.  We'll let that dry in place while we work on the rest of the embellishments.
To make the game wheel you can use either of the game wheel ephemera pieces from the layers pack.  Both will work.  There is a black and white target circle in the Baseboards pack that I used as the base. I punched a hole in the game wheel, added a Game Spinner (old product) with a Long Fastener (brad).  Then added that piece to the target backer.  I know it covered the target but sometimes that happens - it was the perfect size and weight to use!
I cut a strip of the new Distress Woodgrain Halloween which is black woodgrain cardstock with a black core.  I used another craft stick, mounted the cardstock on top, and there you have a faux stand for the game wheel.
I love this Baseboard piece which reminded me an old circus poster.  I added the Halloween Shape with the skull and crossbones to the center.  I also wiped black paint over the Shape to fit it with the theme.
The candy apples were simple to make.  I put Bubbles in a small plastic bag and dripped a few drops of Red Pepper Alcohol Ink over the top.  Close the bag and squish it around till the Bubbles are coated.  Pour out onto a paper plate (disposable/has sides to control rolling away).
Use glue to add tiny stick cuttings and leaves to the top of some of the Bubbles. Pile them in the barrel while adding glue, leave to dry completely.
Once the apples are set.  Adhere Barrel to box with Collage Medium.
I dug out some spiderwebs I bought at Joann last year.  I started by wrapping the spiderwebs around the game wheel and pulling in every direction from there.
Color the sweaters of the Paper Dolls with Distress Crayons.
I added a skull and mask stickers from the Sticker Book, to the Paper Dolls.  Then glued them into the box.  You know me...there are wood blocks behind each of the boys so they are secured to the back wall but can stand out in front of the wheel.
Now back to the top.  I added Hardware Heads over the image that was on the hinge (scroll back up to see what it looked like before).
I wanted to embellish the curtains, so I decided to add black Tinsel to the edge.  This Tinsel is wired so you can bend it to keep its shape.  That is exactly what I did.  I cut a piece and shaped it to fit one or two of the curtain swags and then glued it on so the tinsel hung down just below the swags.

You can see it here along the swags...

I captured some image of the finished top and back.  Hopefully this will help to see how that top piece was added to the box.

Hope you give this one a go.  Such a fun, whimsical piece...not scary at all!  I had a great time making it and sharing it with you!
