Wikimedia-specific info

[edit]

Note, help pages on MediaWiki.org are normally expected not to contain Wikimedia-specific information such as those paragraphs about Commons and CC-0. Currently these are minimal enough and of some interest for third parties too, but keep an eye on their not growing further. --Nemo 08:43, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Non-CC0 (but open) licenses for map data?

[edit]

It's frustrating that only CC0 data is allowed under the Data namespace, because it seems to be very unusual for electoral bodies to release boundary data into the public domain. It's reasonably common, however, for them to release it under various open data licenses. (For example, the Ordnance Survey's open data in the UK is released under the Open Government License, which is fine on the rest of Mediawiki Commons, but not under the Data namespace, apparently.) Is there somewhere I can read more about why this rule exists, or find out if there's any likely timescale for it being changed?

It would be brilliant if we could import more boundary data now that the Wikidata Query Service can render boundaries on maps! Mhl20 (talk) 16:07, 5 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing, Gareth, FĂŚ, MichaelMaggs, Be..anyone, RHaworth, Richard Nevell, and John Cummings: Thanks User:Mhl20, and thanks for the wonderful work you do for mySociety / Wikimedia projects. I'm sure someone better than I will come back to you, or suggest another place for this important discussion. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 08:22, 5 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Despite this being one of the top requested features, phab:T154071 has been marked as "lowest" priority by @Legoktm: because of User:Deskana (WMF)'s position. Please see the discussion there - from the technical perspective, it should take about 10 minutes to make many other licenses available. Also, @Doc James: proposed we simply put the license code in the name of the page and in the comment, and ignore the CC0 code as a technical limitation. For example, Data:Sandbox/Doc_James/Obesity_Males_CC-BY-SA.tab is clearly marked as CC-BY-SA, used at the top by Epidemiology of obesity (enwiki). --Yurik (talk) 10:01, 6 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

See or edit source data.

And how do people propose that attribution-required licences be complied with, by people reusing such data, or images drawn using such data? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:31, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: similar to images -- if you click on an image, it shows licensing. If you click on the "source data" link under a graph, you see the license. The license info should be part of the title and part of the description text, making it very clear. Or to rephrase: it is always up to the user of the image/data to read and follow licensing information. You cannot force the user in either of the cases. --Yurik (talk) 23:27, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Since OSM licence is incompatible with CC0 it is probably not allowed to create map data from OSM data so many existing map data examples are probably allready copyright violations.--Trockennasenaffe (talk) 10:12, 16 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Are there any CC0 licensed shape files for countries available?

[edit]

Hi

Since there is a requirement for CC0 licensed shape files, does anyone know where/if these exist? I'd really like to at least find shape files for countries.

Thanks
