Grammar[edit]

Regarding your edits, while some things need grammar to be fixed, please do not change "can only" to "only can," as well as certain similar occurrences, as in varying situations these can have completely different meanings. Also, you should not remove the Oxford Comma (ie, the comma before an and or an or on lists of more than two items), as its presence is grammatically correct by American English standards, which is what this site has used for a number of years now. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:45, 6 November 2018 (EST)

Please stop repeating the above on the Super Mario Wiki. This isn't a warning, and it's possible that you made a mistake by accident or without realizing it; this is simply a reminder for your information. If the action continues, then a warning will be issued. Thanks for reading and keep contributing.
If you feel this reminder was undeserved, you may appeal it.

Changing the use of the word "only" is completely unnecessary. "he can only punch and destroy bricks if he eats a Super Mushroom" means the same thing as "he can punch and destroy bricks only if he eats a Super Mushroom", for example. As for the example you posted on Doc's page, the sentences mean the same thing.
Also, "they" or "the player" should be used instead of "he or she" usages. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 12:46, 7 November 2018 (EST)

For instance, here you changed a sentence that said one thing into saying a completely different thing that it wasn't intended to say, and is in fact wrong. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:26, 7 November 2018 (EST)

Again, "they/their" should be used instead of "he or she", as per MarioWiki:Manual_of_Style#No_.22you.22s. It does say the latter can be used occasionally, but if it's already as "they/their", don't change it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:15, 9 November 2018 (EST)

Additionally, regarding "they" as singular, there was a proposal to make it be "he or she," but it was shut down after I showed that the Webster company says "they" is perfectly fine as singular on their website. So use "they," please, in accordance with our rules. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:17, 9 November 2018 (EST)
Warning.svg This is a warning to stop your inappropriate behavior (continuing to repeat the above) on the Super Mario Wiki. Please adhere to the rules or you will be blocked from editing this site.

You still seem to not be getting it. Changing the usage of "only" doesn't matter and if "they" is already used, there is no need to change it. In fact, "they" is encouraged through the Manual of Style I linked to above. These changes are unnecessary and don't do anything for the page, so after that's been said, why continue? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:48, 12 November 2018 (EST)

Names of Things[edit]

Does anyone know what the name of a platform with a countdown timer is? And is there a name for a "bottomless" pit, which causes a character to lose a life when fallen into? Dwhitney (talk) 14:27, 7 December 2018 (EST)

I don't know about that first one, but the latter does have a page: pit. Scrooge200 (talk) 14:30, 7 December 2018 (EST)

"He/She" vs "They"[edit]

The rules of this wiki say that "he or she" can be used occasionally instead of "they." Is it okay to use the former if there is a risk of confusing readers when a phrase in a sentence has a plural term of objects, such as in " ...if they [the player] touch [the Octopus's] tentacles, they lose a life"? Dwhitney (talk) 14:55, 7 December 2018 (EST)

"They" works fine in that instance, and can be used in both singular and plural terms. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:01, 7 December 2018 (EST)
The word "tentacles" does not work, however, as those are arms. Octopuses don't have tentacles. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:23, 7 December 2018 (EST)

Okay, so when do you accept the use of "he or she"? Dwhitney (talk) 15:15, 7 December 2018 (EST)

Only times I can think of where that is preferred over "they" are in in-game quotes. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:32, 7 December 2018 (EST)

Uploading Images[edit]

I found some helpful screenshots of Game & Watch Gallery games from mobygames.com that I would like to upload, and I believe they are .jpg ones. Unfortunately, I have read how to do so but am confused as to how exactly to do it. The pictures are on the webpages themselves, and I want to upload the entire ones. What should the link of a picture from mobygames.com look like? Also, if I want to upload an image on one of these wiki pages that does not recommend I do so, what should I do? Dwhitney (talk) 01:21, 8 December 2018 (EST)

You shouldn't ask questions on your own talk page. Anyways, right click the image, click "copy image address," and paste that into the "url" section on the "upload file" page. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:45, 8 December 2018 (EST)

Hello, Dwhitney. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly categorize the file. It's simple to learn how to do so. Just search for the correct category by starting with the following groups:

Images Audio/video files

When uploading, copy the full title of the category and insert it in square brackets into the summary text box below the aboutfile template, replacing the uncategorized template entirely. If you're using the upload function from the text editor, simply add the category link to the description. For example, files related to the game Super Mario World would use:

or

Please consider the above information before uploading more files. Keep in mind that some files can belong to multiple categories. Do not put images into the media files category, or vice versa. If you continue uploading files without categorizing them correctly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

Hello, Dwhitney. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly use the aboutfile template. What you were doing looks like this, and it is an inconvenience for other users to fix up the template. It is simple to learn how to format it correctly. The pre-loaded syntax is shown below.

Just replace the necessary parts with that corresponding information, and remove the entire line for the parameter(s) you don't use. Please consider the above information before uploading more files. If you continue using aboutfile incorrectly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

Parameters you are not using on the aboutfile should be removed. Also, the category you are looking for is , not . The latter doesn't exist, but would place the information of the category itself on the image summary (rather than categorize the image) if it did. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:33, 8 December 2018 (EST)

Thanks for the information. I will do my best to follow your advice the next time I upload images. Is it okay for me to move someone else's uploaded image to another place on a wiki page or for me to delete one? Dwhitney (talk) 00:03, 9 December 2018 (EST)

You can move an image with the "move" tab on the top of the page, but you should only do so to fix capital extensions (PNG to png, for example) and/or if the name needs fixing. You do not have the role needed to delete pages, but you can mark something using delete if it needs to be taken care of. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:06, 9 December 2018 (EST)

Additionally, images should have a lowercase extension (jpg rather than JPG), and sentence fragments for image captions don't need periods, as per MarioWiki:Image use policy and MarioWiki:Manual of Style#Images. EDIT: Also, images in infoboxes don't need "thumb" or "frame". Just the filename and image size. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:39, 12 December 2018 (EST)

If it's a full sentence. Descriptions like "Mario in Super Mario 64" for example isn't a sentence. Further examples are given in the Manual of Style link. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:47, 12 December 2018 (EST)
Remember the extensions should be lowercase. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:30, March 28, 2019 (EDT)

I'm guessing that when typing in an image's URL, I should make the extension all lowercase. But I tried that before, and the uploading page said the image could not be uploaded. What was the reason? Dwhitney (talk) 21:48, 12 December 2018 (EST)

Oh, you can't mess with a URL, otherwise the image won't load. Yeah, should've been clear there, sorry. You can correct the extension from files uploaded from your computer, however. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:54, 12 December 2018 (EST)

Images need to be categorized with the game they came from, not the original game the port is based on. In the case of your recent Helmet images, it should be "Game & Watch Gallery 2 Images", not "Game & Watch Images". The latter is meant for the systems themselves (so looks like I have some cleaning to do there...). Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:40, 28 December 2018 (EST)

Thanks again for the information. I'll do my best to follow your words. If an image that's not categorized correctly gets uploaded, can the user who uploaded it correctly categorize it later? Dwhitney (talk) 15:52, 28 December 2018 (EST)

Yes. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:53, 28 December 2018 (EST)

How would that user fix an image's category error? Dwhitney (talk) 16:05, 28 December 2018 (EST)

By editing the file's page like any other page. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:08, 28 December 2018 (EST)
The category's code would be added under the aboutfile code, allowing any category error to be fixed. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 16:13, 28 December 2018 (EST)

You can't change the direct URL, but you can change the file name in the destination filename box. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 23:59, 16 January 2019 (EST)

Minor edits[edit]

When making small edits like these, please remember to mark them as minor by ticking the "This is a minor edit" checkbox above the Save page button. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 22:22, 12 December 2018 (EST)

Rather than only saying "Minor edit" in the summary, you need to actually mark the edit as minor with the checkbox. This way users can filter out minor edits in the recent changes when there are hundreds of edits to manage through. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 20:00, 13 December 2018 (EST)
^ This is also easier to do. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:56, 15 December 2018 (EST)
Are they on mobile? It can't be done on mobile... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:02, 15 December 2018 (EST)
There's no mobile tags with their edits, but if you are on mobile, please let us know. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:05, 15 December 2018 (EST)

Most of the time, I edit the wiki on a tablet. If I edit on a desktop or laptop, I will check the "This is a minor edit" box when necessary. Dwhitney (talk) 12:43, 16 December 2018 (EST)

But you should still be able to check the box even on tablet since you're using the desktop version of the website (otherwise your edits would be tagged with "mobile edit" if you're using the mobile site). Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 19:48, 16 December 2018 (EST)

I do not see a "This is a minor edit" box at all on the "save" page. Dwhitney (talk) 23:05, 16 December 2018 (EST)

The minor edit box is directly above the save page button if you are viewing the desktop site. It's also possible you are viewing the mobile version anyway, so perhaps a screenshot could help...
Additionally, I noticed you are making multiple edits to the same page in a short time frame. If you plan on making multiple edits to the same page, such as here, do edit the whole page rather than section-by-section. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 01:24, 22 December 2018 (EST)

I meant that I don't see a "This is a minor edit" box on the "save" page on my tablet. I saw the "minor edit" box on a desktop computer. Also, I edit articles section by section because apparently that's the only way I can edit them on a tablet, and to be honest with you, I don't like doing that if I want to edit more than one section at a time (except on really long articles). If there's a way I can edit more than one article section at a time on my tablet, please let me know. Dwhitney (talk) 11:14, 23 December 2018 (EST)

Do you mean that you are on a tablet? --Ski Yoshi FanOfYoshi A Dr. Freezegood 11:15, 23 December 2018 (EST)

Yes. Dwhitney (talk) 11:18, 23 December 2018 (EST)

At the bottom of the page, do you see a link that says "Desktop"? If you click that, it takes you to the desktop website and you can edit like you would usually on a desktop. Otherwise like Alex95 said, I think you should upload a screenshot, it could help here. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 18:58, 23 December 2018 (EST)

I do see a "Desktop" link, and I clicked on it. Thanks for letting me know. Dwhitney (talk) 22:37, 23 December 2018 (EST)

New articles[edit]

To reiterate what I said here, make sure the pages you are creating are finished when you create them. This means they need to have the appropriate templates (infobox, nav template, etcs.) and categories upon their creation. If you need to, you can work on the page offsite or in a sandbox page, or mark the page you created with construction and add what is missing later. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:28, 9 January 2019 (EST)

I did ask for your help in creating articles, so thanks for that. If I enter the main info in a new article and want someone else, such as an admin, to enter the infobox on it, should I still mark the page with construction? Dwhitney (talk) 13:38, 9 January 2019 (EST)

You can copy the templates and categories from another article (say the ones I just added) and adjust the parameters. Marking a page for construction means you yourself intend on working on it. I'll look over the pages to see if something was forgotten, though do keep these in mind. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:44, 9 January 2019 (EST)

Game & Watch[edit]

Like Nintendo DS, Game & Watch is a system name and isn't italicised. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 19:48, 13 January 2019 (EST)

According to a Mario encyclopedia I looked through, Game & Watch is italicized usually when used as an adjective (e.g., a Game & Watch game) but not when used as a noun (e.g., on the Game & Watch). I don't know why, though. Dwhitney (talk) 15:46, 14 January 2019 (EST)

Was the encyclopedia official, as different wikis have different policies. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 15:51, 14 January 2019 (EST)

It was a Super Mario Encyclopedia, featuring all the Super Mario games up until 2015, I believe. Dwhitney (talk) 16:00, 14 January 2019 (EST)

Per this proposal we are not allowed to cite that encyclopedia due to plagiarizing directly from this and other wikis, and the reason that Game & Watch was italicized was probably a fault of their own or from one of the wikis they plagiarized, although if other official sources also italicize Game & Watch whether or not we italicize Game & Watch may need to be relooked. Doomhiker (talk)Artwork of a Topmini from Super Mario Galaxy 16:06, 14 January 2019 (EST)
It doesn't need to be relooked. The fact is it's a name of a series of systems, and we don't italicise those. Rosalina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 19:59, 14 January 2019 (EST)

The pages weren't deleted, they were turned into redirects. All you have to do is look through the redirect's history and view the revision before it was turned into a redirect. To make things simple, here they all are:

You're going to have to reupload images and make template corrections on Nintendo Wiki, however. But otherwise, information is all there! Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:20, 30 January 2019 (EST)

RE:Wiki Rules[edit]

If a warning has been issued by an admin, it becomes an admin matter. Admins can give advice of their own. If the warned user needs more information, they can ask the warning admin. Having others add on to the warning can make most users, especially new ones, feel like they are being ganged up on, no matter how helpful the advice may be. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:55, March 27, 2019 (EDT)

Deletion[edit]

When marking files/pages for deletion, make sure nothing is linking to them anymore. Also make sure that what's in the "reason" parameter is the new replacement, not the image that's marked for deletion. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:17, March 28, 2019 (EDT)

How should I make sure nothing is linking to files/pages pending deletion anymore? And what should follow "{{delete|" should be the new replacement? Dwhitney (talk) 21:29, March 28, 2019 (EDT)

If you can remove the link to it, do so. I don't usually worry about userspace, though. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:44, March 28, 2019 (EDT)
Yes, go through the "What links here" and change any original links to the new one before marking the old image for deletion. The delete template would be typed as :File:<New file name>. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:20, March 28, 2019 (EDT)

Looking around the vgchartz.com site, I'm not 100% sure how it's run, but it looks like it works like a wiki. Members can sign up and edit information, which means the information can be unsourced and/or outdated. Again, I'm not sure how the site is run, but for now, I don't think it's credible to use as a source. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:41, August 27, 2019 (EDT)

Re: G&WG series characters (responding to comment on LTL's page)[edit]

How about all the DKJrs in the original Waluigi Stadium? Seems DKJr can be in any amount he wants. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:58, October 12, 2019 (EDT)

The entire point of having separate character and species articles is to have one space to dedicate to solo appearances and another to contain appearances where they appear in multiple or generally deviate from their generic design; Nintendo's default, especially after the 90's, is the latter with the exception of playable appearances (if that). In contrast, the times Donkey Kong Jr. appears in multiple are so minor - relegated to "Modern" versions in the Game & Watch Gallery series and other cameos like the above - that it just wouldn't be worthwhile to make a separate article over it. That is basically the only tangible, reliable way to distinguish a character like Toad or Yoshi from its identical-looking species at this point: "Does it appear by itself or as a group?" Sometimes, I wonder if even that's enough since Nintendo has continually shown themselves to not care to be nearly as consistent about it as we strive to be. LinkTheLefty (talk) 06:21, October 12, 2019 (EDT)

There have been times where there are multiple Toads and Yoshis with the same color (Super Princess Peach and Paper Mario, to name a couple), so I think the same thing can apply here and link to their species. As for DK Jr. and Mario, they should just link to their page. Unless the games themselves specifically mention one individual character for Toad and Yoshi? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 20:04, October 12, 2019 (EDT)

The G&WG series cast credits say "Toad" and "Yoshi" for their appearances, as can be seen in this video, in this video, and at the end of this video. The G&WG 2 manual calls the Yoshi in Chef "Yoshi," as can be seen here. Dwhitney (talk) 20:46, October 12, 2019 (EDT)
The cast credits isn't too helpful here because you can clearly see that characters and species (like enemies and such) are indiscriminately listed together. As for the manual, referencing species subjects in singular is surprisingly common in the series. It happens almost all the time in manuals and games if you pay attention. In the game itself, we see Yoshi lay an egg, hatch another Yoshi, and then that Yoshi replaces him. Obviously, both are not the character, and it would be redundant to list Yoshi as a character and species under the Chef section (just because of an impression that it might be starting off with the character). Gameplay makes no discernible difference between this Yoshi and that Yoshi, so the simplest solution is to just link it to the article where they are treated as multiple. LinkTheLefty (talk) 21:19, October 12, 2019 (EDT)
I'm going to have to agree with LinkTheLefty here. Yoshi and Toad link to the species, while Mario and Donkey Kong Jr. just link to the character because there's no equivalent page (and there doesn't really need to be one). Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:24, October 12, 2019 (EDT)
I wish Nintendo would clarify whether or not those characters are actually Toad and Yoshi. But I'll go with what you say. Dwhitney (talk) 22:14, October 12, 2019 (EDT)

Yeah, that's fine I think. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:32, October 12, 2019 (EDT)

Missions[edit]

From what I can tell, we keep the "Next/Previous Level" in infoboxes confined to just the world the level or mission is in. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:37, January 21, 2020 (EST)

Apparently not, because Behind Chain-Chomp's Gate's page has a link to the next course's first mission's page, and I didn't add that link. Do you not want that link there? Dwhitney (talk) 00:47, January 21, 2020 (EST)
...Hmm, I could've sworn we didn't do that. But I took a quick look around at other end levels (1-4 in Super Mario Bros. and such) and they all have a link to the next world. My mistake, I guess. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 00:51, January 21, 2020 (EST)

Chill Cavern, Inner Maze, etc.[edit]

Weren't they unofficial names? Those titles were removed from those articles for that reason. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:03, March 10, 2020 (EDT)

No, they're not. The levels are so called in another version of SMA4. I compared YouTube videos of each level to find out. Dwhitney (talk) 17:13, March 10, 2020 (EDT)
If the videos date before January 21, 2016, it's from a hack that used fan-made titles for the Japanese e-Reader courses. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:17, March 10, 2020 (EDT)
Since they match up with that hack, please remove them. Redirects are fine I think, but the names themselves don't belong in the articles. LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:44, March 11, 2020 (EDT)

Friend Request[edit]

Do you want to exchange userboxes? --KnightDarkNightKnight 23:31, September 5, 2020 (EDT)

Mini games[edit]

I don't know why you're removing the "controls" parameter from mini game infoboxes. They're completely valid, so care to explain? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:05, April 13, 2021 (EDT)

Apparently, it was fine to put the controls in the infoboxes years ago, but later, it was decided to put the controls in their own section, as can be seen on various Mario Party minigame articles. That's what I'm doing: moving the controls from the infoboxes to their own sections. Dwhitney (talk) 15:45, April 13, 2021 (EDT)

The sentence I'm referring to seems to say how a player can get rid of a Bullet Bill he or she launched, not how to evade it. But maybe the sentence is really saying how to evade a Bullet Bill. Triple Swing Lift[edit]

If you're looking to create Triple Swing Lift, then allow me to ask this question first: are those like ferris wheels? If so, it might be better to create an article on a general ferris wheel article and talk about the different types of ferris wheels there. See my comment on your proposal. It currently fails to address the existence of the Metal Box article, so you need to add a third option to both split Cap Block and merge Metal Box with the resulting article.

I don't think you understood what I said. I want you to add "split Cap Block and merge Metal Box with it" as an entire third voting option alongside the existing support and oppose options (you could also rename the support option "split Cap Block without merging Metal Box" for clarity), not just a throwaway line in the proposal that says "maybe we could do this". "Power Caps" is likely a mistake, since they have no relevance to how you access the level (assuming it's referring to the plumbers' caps, though there's nothing else in the remake it'd be referring to). "So long kinga Bowser!"[edit]

I'm only aware of a tweet from Mr. Martinet mentioning this, could you post the interview? Regardless, Martinet remembering what he said 25 years ago is not more credible to official 1996 documents from Nintendo of America detailing voice lines heard in the game. And in fact, I cannot hear "kinga" at any playback speed, it's too long of a word to actually be the case. It's most likely "So long-eh Bowser", as has been speculated before Martinet posted his tweet. -Vipz (talk) 13:39, January 30, 2022 (EST)

About Encyclopedia[edit]

What it's trying to point out is that the Encyclopedia's English translation, for whatever reason, uses the enemy names from the Nintendo Game Boy Player's Guide, so there are typos compared to the original manual romanization. Re:Ground Pound[edit]

OK, it's as follows (sticking with games and manuals because guides and other material would take all day). It's labeled as "Pound The Ground" in the Super Mario 64 manual; in-game, there are two instances of "Pound the Ground", one instance of "Pounding the Ground" (making it awkward if you're trying to describe something else), and five instances of lowercase "pound" (not necessarily as the name of the move). It's labeled as "Pound the Ground" in the Super Mario 64 DS manual; in-game, there are three instances of "pound the ground", two instances of "ground-pound" (as a verb), and three instances of "pound" (again, not really as the move name). So, yes, as the proper name of the move, "Pound the Ground" has commonality - the moves are still capitalized in the manual, and that's the version most people will see as Super Mario 64 continues to have more re-releases over Super Mario 64 DS. LinkTheLefty (talk) 15:38, March 16, 2022 (EDT)

Yeah, I wasn't following what you meant before. I think it's okay to use "ground-pound" as a verb where applicable (except the Super Mario 64 main page since that's for info specific to the N64 version). LinkTheLefty (talk) 16:37, March 16, 2022 (EDT)

Yeah, but this is fiction. Basic (e.g. single-word) moves like jump and stomp, sure, they're almost unanimously agreed to be lowercase, which happens most times. There's less leeway when you get to the more elaborate moves, and then stuff in-between is inconsistent. Where do you cut yourself off? Would you write Falcon Punched, or falcon-punched? What about special/RPG/other fantastical moves? Etc. I always felt like moves/actions were one of the murkier stylization subjects. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:50, March 16, 2022 (EDT)

Maybe this deserves a broader discussion. Words are normally capitalized as they are sourced, and I would think this necessarily extends to moves/verbs. Here's what I'd do minimally in your edit for now at least: unhyphenating ground-pound, if not treated as a verb, should be "Pound the Ground" in the context of this game as we seem to have agreed, and Backward Somersault can either be left as-is or rendered lowercase. Re:Water Bomb[edit]

In Super Mario 64, the Bob-omb Buddies refer to it in their dialog: "Watch out! If you wander around here, you're liable to be plastered by a water bomb! Those enemy Bob-ombs love to fight, and they're always finding ways to attack. This meadow has become a battlefield ever since the Big Bob-omb got his paws on the Power Star. Can you recover the Star for us? Cross the bridge and go left up the path to find the Big Bob-omb. Please come back to see me after you've retrieved the Power Star!" and "Hey, you! It's dangerous ahead, so listen up! Take my advice. Cross the two bridges ahead, then watch for falling water bombs. The Big Bob-omb at the top of the mountain is very powerful--don't let him grab you! We're Bob-omb Buddies, and we're on your side. You can talk to us whenever you'd like to!" Super Mario 64 DS reduces this to one mention: "You there, sir. Watch out! Wander around here and you might get plastered by a water bomb! This meadow has become a battlefield ever since the Big Bob-omb got his paws on the Power Star. Just a little while ago, a mustached man with a red cap just wouldn't listen and left for the mountain. Come to think of it, that mustached man hasn't returned. I wonder whatever happened to him..." LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:38, August 26, 2022 (EDT)

Re:treasure chest[edit]

The sign by "The Cap'n" in the Ocean Cave of Jolly Roger's Bay refers to them as "Treasure Chests" in Super Mario 64, but this became "treasure chests" in Super Mario 64 DS. 64 DS's description for the Boom Box mini-game refers to them as "treasure chests" too. I'm pretty sure the Super Mario Galaxy games were also inconsistent about it. I think it's "treasure chest" in Super Mario Galaxy and "Treasure Chest" in Super Mario Galaxy 2? You'll find the hidden courses only after regaining some of the Power Stars. The Cap Blocks are a big help! Red for the Wing Cap, green for the Metal Cap, blue for the Vanish Cap." I think the former's on a sign and the latter's by Toad or possibly a post-star narration. LinkTheLefty (talk) 06:15, December 5, 2022 (EST)

Re:Spiked bombs[edit]

Sure. Here's the line in the English N64 version: "Mario, it's Peach! Please be careful! Bowser is so wicked! He will try to burn you with his horrible flame breath. Run around behind and grab him by the tail with the [B] Button. Once you grab hold, swing him around in great circles. Rotate the Control Stick to go faster and faster. The faster you swing him, the farther he'll fly. Use the [C] Buttons to look around, Mario. You have to throw Bowser into one of the bombs in the four corners. Aim well, then press [B] again to launch Bowser. Good luck, Mario! Our fate is in your hands." For good measure, the Japanese version:「マリオ! ねらいを よーくさだめて・・・ もういちどBボタンよ!」The DS version understandably rephrases it because of the control scheme, but also for some reason makes it less obvious that it's from Peach and, in the English version only, changed the term "bombs" to "spiked orbs". This wouldn't appear to be the only time the Player's Guide was consulted in the making of Super Mario 64 DS; for example, Inside the Volcano comes from the original Player's Guide too, making it more easily confused with the other volcano mission. Classic mode route[edit]

Just a heads up, I think a list for the classic mode route in Mario's article conveys the information better than a table due to being easier to maintain and the information being straightforward enough for a list (I think it also applies whenever there's information on classic mode routes). I applied advice from Wikipedia[1] while also discussing a bit with someone more versed in web development about the general use of tables on the wiki. Strange cloud[edit]

FYI, "strange cloud" is a closer to the Japanese, in both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The "toxic" part was added in DS, but it doesn't correspond to the original text, so the name would be "strange toxic cloud" if we're being proper; either way, the article title should probably change to either its Super Princess Peach or Super Smash Bros. names anyway. LinkTheLefty (talk) 20:28, July 28, 2023 (EDT)

Well like I said, it would be either the most recent Mario-franchise name in Super Princess Peach or overall one in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the former, you can see a text dump calls it "smoke" twice (can vouch for a Fury Volcano Message Block), and for the latter, this article has text directly lifted from the game showing it referred to as "Poison Cloud" and "poisonous cloud". I wonder if the Smash thing should be considered the same or split, though. LinkTheLefty (talk) 21:44, July 28, 2023 (EDT)

RE: Trip Navigator[edit]

I was about to revert the edit myself before Doc did for a similar reason. The company is not well-known enough (and it being established before the game's release doesn't make it more likely), and the term isn't that unique of a name, it's just "someone who navigates a trip" if it was a designated title (a "trip navigator"). Also, Google results are only popular for the term you're searching; that doesn't mean they're popular period, let alone popular enough for the minigame to be based on it. RE: Tables[edit]

This seems to be an issue only in mobile view where the columns narrow down to the width of the longest text.
