I think all of Wicked Act I’s music is pretty solid, but I’ve always been kinda stunned by the way this one (imo) blows the rest out of the water. I think it’s the best song in the entire soundtrack, probably several times over. It’s kinda unreal how much sauce this one has in comparison to everything else lol. Brushes up on some real interesting themes- the kind of banal evil that spawns from conformity belief surrounding who is and is not a valid target of terrible acts- simply because they’re known to be “wicked”, and thus fair game for whatever it is you wish upon them. A lot of people have barely-tempered urges to visit terrible cruelty upon those who wrong them and this song really gets into the weeds of how eager people can be when it comes to find a socially-acceptable target for that hate. I think the musical itself *kind of* deals with this idea, but it’s just a little blunt overall. Elphaba is a little too innocent and her antagonists a little too evil overall.

Everyone alive, everyone you've ever met, is consumed by an overwhelming fear that they will be abandoned by the tribe. For some it's worse than others, but always present in some capacity. People construct ludicrous social rules & roles for the sake of their own safety- when all you need is a presented series of moral boxes to check in order to be considered a "good person" by the tribe (say the pre-approved words, believe the pre-approved things, complete the pre-approved acts), the chances that you will be cast out from the group are drastically lowered. Defined parameters are much less frightening. When people lash out at those who tumble (or willingly) step outside these parameters, they are really just protecting the fragile society-wide understanding of morality that *they themselves* maintain so that they can easily know how not to entrench upon it. You *have* to show everyone else that stepping outside these lines will be met with harsh, swift, unrelenting punishment.

And for everything else in this soundtrack, though it's all nice to listen to, nothing else ever really touches on something so meaningful. I think this is basically a masterpiece, and I wish there was other stuff on the soundtrack I could connect with in the same way. I like "Something Bad' a good deal in a vacuum, but I find the animal plot to be kind of underbaked in general. A shame, considering it's pretty much the central driving conflict of the whole show.
