Insomnium, especially on their early records, capture In Flames' ability to write a killer melody and then lather it in atmosphere and sorrow. Hugely influential band and easily one of my favorites.

I wasn't familiar with them! I really enjoy their music; it reminds me of Opeth with their heavy, classical, and often soft tones.

The band who showed me that darkness could be poetic and the night could be something beautiful. And i put them on my TCC. Seriously.

Why isn't Last Statement in their top songs? Man such a beautiful, powerful and emotional song, especially that last couple of minutes.

Have I found the golden maiden? Have I found the fairest one? I will fold her into my arms. I will wipe away her tears. I will keep her safe from all the harm. Forevermore.

Song of the Dusk is better than the entire last album put together. So obviously it's a b-side for Japan only. I am just tired by now of artists putting their best stuff as some idiotic obscure rarities. Thankfuly it's coming out as an EP with two other unreleased songs, thankfuly.

Want the Anno 1696 CD with the bonus tracks but it's like $35 US dollars. Is there someplace that's selling it for cheaper or am I stuck paying the $35?

Anno 1696 is great.

After more than 20 years listening to metal, mostly a lover of melodic stuff, I only discovered this band last year, going unnoticed in my music gallery. Today I must say that Insomnium passes the level of many bands older than itself. WHAT A MASTERFUL TALENT

By Insomnium standard, new album is pretty average....

Would love to love (sic!) Anno 1696, but it's just not clicking. Apart from poor production, the songwriting is also questionable.

The composition and musicianship on Anno 1696 is beyond incredible. The guitar melodies are exceptional but I'm particularly in love with the drumming, it's fkin awesome. XD

Fuck me, the last 2 and half minutes or so of Godforsaken are gorgeous.

Never been a huge Insomnium fan. I mean, they're GOOD but never really caught my attention too much. Just started listening to the new album. First sond and I'm like: OKAY, they just got real interesting.

This is my first new Insomnium album since I became a huge fan in January 2020, unless you wanna count Argent Moon, but that's just an EP (An amazing EP that is), but let's stick to Anno 1696 here. It exceeded all my expectations. Lilian was already an amazing track, but I was a bit mixed on White Christ, and The Witch Hunter was great as well. Luckily White Christ sounds way better in the context of the album, and the new songs are absolutely unreal as well. '1696' immediately starts the album of with a heavy banger, 'Godforsaken' is absolutely beautiful and can we just take a moment to appreciate 'Starless Paths'? Starless fucking Paths! The Unrest is a nice acoustic song setting you up for the ultimate final banger that is 'The Rapids'. Insomnium knocked it out of the park once again. Now I can add more thousands of scrobbles to my already thousands of scrobbles of this band :P

I am diving in the new album, like in dark cold lake. Absolutely amazing.

seems heavier than the last few albums, juxtaposed with the melodic clean riffs we all know and love. Also loving the vocals' diversity and complexity on songs like godforsaken. glad to be experiencing this album with y'all around the world

Insomnium still continuing their 20+ year old tradition of being the most consistently solid band in the entire field of melodic death metal. Great new album.

Unsurprisingly, the new album is fantastic. Though I do miss their old style.

Was stuck listening to music on my laptop for a few weeks due to computer issues, with pretty mediocre sound quality. It's fixed now and I'm listening to 'The Witch Hunter' with banger sound for the first time and it sounds even better. Hyped for the album!

The Witch Hunter is amazing.

"While we Sleep"... I really cried with this song. Each line describes my thoughts..... How much I want things to go back to the way they were before.

'Lilian' has some cool old Above The Weeping World/Across The Dark vibes. Love it!

I was planning on ranking the Argent Moon songs once the EP was released. Turns out: That's impossible. Each of the 4 tracks is unique, and the EP as a whole also stands out in their discography. The Conjurer gives major Heart Like A Grave vibes, while The Reticent sounds a lot like One For Sorrow. That, while still being recognizable as their own songs. But with The Antagonist, Insomnium really takes a different direction, the first 2 tracks are good, but this one really brings something unique in their discography, which I love. Then we move on to what is probably the best track on the EP, The Wanderer. The song slowly builds up as it goes, making it really feel like a journey. The EP is overall a lot slower paced than their usual stuff, but Sevänen has talked about the fact that they want to release their 9th album in 2022, which will lie a bit more on the same line as their previous stuff. Very solid release, a strong 9/10 from me.

Great EP that'll shine furthermore in the upcoming dark months.
