A group of employees are tasked with establishing a settlement on Niflheim, a planet of ice. The employees are repeatedly regenerated, becoming new versions of themselves with their old memories intact. An issue arises when an employee, believed to be dead, is already cloned when the original iteration comes back to life. Refusing to allow the clone to take its place, this error causes a ripple effect on the entire mission.
The Mickey 17 release date is January 31, 2025. The film was originally scheduled to premiere in March 2024 but was postponed.
Robert Pattinson leads a star-studded cast as the titular character Mickey. Pattinson starred in The Twilight Saga as vampire Edward Cullen, in addition to Tenet and The Batman. Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody) stars as Nasha, with Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Minari) as Berto, Toni Collette as Gwen and Mark Ruffalo as Hieronymous Marshall. The film also features a large ensemble cast including Chelsea Li, Angus Imrie, Steve Park, Thomas Turgoose, Alif Satar and Daniel Henshall.
Bong Joon-ho writes and directs Mickey 17. His previous work includes the Academy Award winning Parasite, Snowpiercer and Okja. Darius Khondji, the cinematographer for Okja, returns for Mickey 17. He has previously worked on Se7en, Bardo and Midnight in Paris. Another Okja collaborator, composer Jung Jae-il, also works on Mickey 17.
Mickey 17 is a screen adaptation of Ashton Edward’s novel Mickey7. The book, which was released in 2022, is about a man named Mickey who is an ‘expendable’ that gets a new body every time he dies.
