Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
You cannot really choose
The premise is absolutely excellent, the ability to choose what is about to happen is not entirely new, but is somewhat new for netflix and could surely be an amazing niche for future projects. The cast is fairly decent too, some well established actors appear here demonstrating semi-decent acting, unfortunately limited by the immature plot.
First of all, we don't really have a choice, as it is also stated in the movie itself later on. For a movie of this sort there shouldn't be a ''wrong choice''. I found myself choosing the wrong option several times throughout and had to ''go back'' rewatching some of the previous scenes, just to end up choosing again, this time the thrill was taken out of it completely, since i knew which is the ''correct'' asnwer. Basically, you end up going through like 7 alternate endings with each one trying to look more complex, but in my opinion failing quite miserably, since i didn't find this hard to follow at all, obviously more aimed at younger audiences.
Overall, the movie is quite blunt to put it simply, none of the alternative endings and choices were fun at all. Another decent premise derailed by false hype of just being unique, sad.
The Debt Collector (2018)
Wow, extremely bad
I am shocked by the fact there are still directors out there in 2018 making this kind of garbage. The plot is absolutely dumb, 2 debt collectors going around collecting debts is a decent premise, but the execution is just pure stupidity.
I must mention this movie can boast the worst shoot-out action movie scene ever, i have seen tons of action flicks, but no shoot-out scene even from the 1980s comes even remotely close to the dumbfounding stupidity displayed in this film.
Overall, really, really bad, wouldn't recommend this to anyone, i simply can't wrap my head around how many good reviews are there on this movie.
The Mist (2017)
Abysmal
I don't usually review TV series, but this was a massive disappointment for me, and yes, unlike other people reviewing it, i have watched all 10 episodes and i can guarantee it doesn't get any better.
The whole time you are sitting there waiting for exciting stuff to happen, but all you get are absolutely dumb and simple, emotional conversations by people who you really don't care about, since there is next to no character delevopment, everyone is portrayed as extremely stupid and you know what is going to happen 99% of the time. Personally, i wasn't the biggest fan of the movie, haven't read the book though, so i went in hoping to see something better here, but unfortunately it's even worse than the movie!
I can sincerely say i have never seen a tv series worse than this, by far the stupidest, dumbest and most blatant tv series i have ever seen in my life! Do not recommend this to anyone, there are heaps of excellent series to watch out there!
22 July (2018)
Well made, unfortunately quite boring altogether
Yes, the movie is obviously based on real events, mostly on the aftermath of the terrible attack, but there are many major nuances i personally didn't enjoy about this movie.
First of all they make it seem as if the attack lasted mere minutes, when in actuality Breivik unleashed his wrath over the victims for over an hour before he was ultimately stopped. I didn't like some events being so rushed and then a lot of filler material used to add more time to the already quite long screentime.
Secondly, in my opinion, there was an overwhelming focus on one particular family, who suffered from Brevik's attacks, in fact, they spent more time focusing on Viljar's family than Breivik himself, going into this movie i really hoped to see Brevik's perspective more and go deeper into his background/mind instead of watching a boring, slow and emotional flick about a disabled boy who was shot 5 times, i understand it might sound harsh, but that is the truth, there are tons of emotional movies about victims out there, an opportunity of delving deep into a mind of a mass murderer was truly missed by the directors here showing just a fraction of who Breivik really is.
The scenery and vibe in this movie are amazing, although this largely plays into the movie feeling drawn-out and quite boring at times. I honestly think there was great potential here, which simply got derailed by emotions of the directors.
Overall, ''22 July'' is a fairly average flick, that gets far too emotional, skipping important details and painting broad strokes when it comes to the actual events, quite boring and definitely a bit of a let down!
The Bad Education Movie (2015)
Watch this if you like the original series
Thought this would be a massive flop, but to my surprise i really liked this dumb movie for some reason. This movie takes things to a different level of craziness, far exceeding even the already crazy and funny TV series from 2012.
You can expect all the original actors in their same old characters just like in the show having fun and doing what they do best - getting into weird and bizzare situations. If you enjoy Jack Whitehall's performances this movie will not dissapoint you, as Whitehall is 100% in his usual character.
Overall, it has a fair bit of laughs and is definitely a decent british comedy, just don't take it too seriously as it is bizzare and unpredictably stupid at moments, leaving you speechless.
Puen Tee Raluek (2017)
Keep your promises
An amazing taiwanese ghost flick! This movie is packed with action from start to finish, most importantly, not in the casual obnoxious Hollywood fashion, it's a ghost movie, but it still maintains the ellegancy of a high class drama.
The premise itself is really interesting and the movie starts out without much filler content and background info, we get briefly introduced to the relationship between these two best friends and after that it's straight into action, without spoiling the brief intro of this film, as it is important to see for yourself. Also the acting is outstanding, even from the younger cast you can expect top notch screenplay here.
Most importantly, this movie easily holds the suspense throughout, when you think you are getting let in to fully understand what's happening, the plot changes in a way making you over think what's about to happen, making the movie feel somewhat distant, if i could describe it as that
Overall, a decent taiwanese ghost story, just enough ghosts, jump scares, drama and sorrow, nothing feels over the top here perfectly balancing everything out. Worth a watch, if you are bored of the usual Hollywood thrillers!
The Good Neighbor (2016)
Surprisingly well made
This movie is truly original, well thought-through, witty and clever. To be frank, i didn't expect this movie to be nearly as good, simply due to the seemingly immature premise.
Although very limited character involvement is used in this movie it does its job of keeping the suspense throughout and there's not a single moment where the movie feels boring or a waste of time, yes, the runtime is relatively short and i can assure you the producers haven't filled it with irrelevant filler shots. Although the main focus wasn't on this movie being a mind twisting thriller, it still accomplishes fooling you at times and being 1 step ahead for most of the runtime, people could argue some of the actions could have been foreseen, but for the most part it was hard telling how the story was going to unfold in hindsight.
Overall not a bad watch, has a little bit of suspense, thrill, drama and even a bit of fun at times, a really well rounded little flick with decent acting that surely does not disappoint!
The Invitation (2015)
Mediocre at best
First of all, this movie is really boring, simply due to the fact all the action is confined to the last 20 minutes, eventhough the runtime is 100 minutes on the dot. We are left with next to no action here, just waiting for the obvious, the main character tells you what is going to happen right from the start, you can choose to believe him or not, that's not the problem here. They could have made the ending different by twisting it somehow, but they decided to go for the blatantly obvious ending everyone anticipated.
People are trying to pass this movie as clever and deep, which it isn't in the slightest, the plot is extremely linear start to finish with a couple of stupid flashbacks in the middle, which are just a pathetic attempt at making this movie more complex, eventually none of that matters, since as i said the plot is linear and the story unfolds exactly like you thought it would.
Acting here is somewhat bareable, not the worst acting ever, the movie is nicely made too, just to give some posittives, if it wasn't for the obvious, linear plot and the action being confined to the last 20 minutes it could have been a great hostage thriller, i really hate when writers have a fairly decent premise, but choose to run it down the drain.
Overall, this movie is really plain and simple, could even say flat out boring, since there is nothing but a dinner party happening for the majority of the screentime. Not your greatest horror watch!
Le manoir (2017)
Really dry humour, no horror
Hard to judge this movie to be honest, it's supposed to be horror/comedy, well it kind of is, but then again it feels really weird. The humour in this movie is really dry, never knew the french could make a movie like this, quite surprised.
As far as horror is concerned it isn't scary nor was it meant to be by the producers, so not being scary and at the same time not really being a comedy it really leaves this movie quite empty. Can't really describe it as cliche, since the whole setup here is way different than that of a Hollywood horror/comedy movie, sadly this movie just doesn't feel satisfying, the plot twist is quite horrible too. The acting isn't the greatest either, so really don't know what to make of this mediocre french horror flick.
I wouldn't say this is something really worthwhile, as there are a lot of great movies of this genre out there, for example, ''Tucker and Dale vs Evil'', ''Shaun of the Dead'' and ''Zombieland'', just to name a few, i noticed some people here are comparing this film to these movies and i strongly dissagree as this film does not deliver on any of the fronts the above mentioned horror comedy classics do.
Overall not a great watch, do not listen to people comparing this mediocre movie to great cult classics only due to the fact its foreign, i get that people are thirsty to appreciate art outside of the well known Hollywood layout, which is a posittive side note, but a movie being different does not always make it amazing!
Annihilation (2018)
Logic Non-existant
I don't usually talk about logic when it comes to sci-fi movies like this, but this was just too stupid. No, don't even start with this movie being deep and thought-provoking or somehow a psychological masterpiece, it is none of that. This movie consists of one completely illogical action after the other. If this was a somewhat real setting all the characters would be dead within 5 minutes of entering the ''shiver''.
I simply can't fathom how can you have an amazing premise like this and run it down the drain by an absolutely idiotic and illogical plot. At this point i am starting to think Hollywood is doing this on purpose, there is no other explanation. There's heaps of precedents to learn from, there's an over-whelming amount of knowledge on creating films and writing stories within Hollywood, there's amazing actors like Natalie Portman starring in this movie and still it comes out absolutely horrible, how can this happen? And this is not only the case with this film, almost everything coming out now is an absolute load of bullcrap, as if these movies are getting made for 3 year olds to look at the funky imagery, really disappointed.
Yes, you could argue that the scenery was outstanding and beautifully done throughout, i won't deny that, the cinematographers have done their job right, atleast, but by no means does that make up for the enormous plot holes and absolutely non-existant logic in this movie. This movie really reminds me of ''Gravity'', which had the same thing going on, amazing graphics with an extremely weak plot.
The only way to enjoy this film is having it play in the background while you are doing something just to catch a glimpse of the funky scenery once in a while, if you are someone who likes to analyze and thoroughly understand movies, this is surely not for you, as soon as you begin watching questions of confusion will arise and they will never stop until the ending, which is really weak too, the ''twist'' if you can even call it that is so pathetic a toddler would laugh at it.
3/10 for the cinematographic achievement.
Public Schooled (2017)
Feels empty
The premise is quite decent for a teen high school comedy, but it does not really go anywhere since the main character is far too stubborn to do anything and the movie just feels quite cringy with a lack of character, also the producers have decided to go with a really small pool of actors for this film, which is rather weird for a movie like this.
Well, i could not say it was absolutely boring, the movie had its funny moments, which where quite enjoyable, hence my rating is not as low as you would expect from what i have mentioned above.
Acting wise Daniel Doheny and Judy Greer did an alright job in this movie, Judy Greer was in her usually vibe of her character ''Kitty Sanchez'' From back when she starred in ''Arrested Development''
This movie is just plain and mediocre, nothing to remember about this movie, it will disappear from your memory within days, i can bet soon after writing this review i will not remember what the movie was about, since it really is not anything outstanding. By the way, this flick only has 10 user reviews on imdb, most of them being fake good ratings, so do not fall for those reviews of throw-away imdb accounts consisting of only 1 review and 0 other activities.
Selfie from Hell (2018)
Dire dross of a movie
When you do not have any clever ideas to make a decent horror movie you are simply relegated to rely on pure jump scares and annoying sounds.
Right from the get go you can get the gist of this movie, an endless tirade of pointless, out of place, extremely loud and simply utterly obnoxious jump scares one after another. I simply can not fathom how can directors still go along with making movies like these in 2018, it just blows my mind how can anyone proceed an idea so pointless and stupid and waste their time making a movie like this.
Do not watch unless you want to have to get your ears replaced after this crazy, obnoxious compilation of extremely loud, pointless noises. A Massive Flop!
The Package (2018)
Extremely stupid, but by no means horrible
This movie is absolutely dumb and bizzare, but i have to admit it is really original, i have never seen a movie with such an absurd premise, actually turn out to be somewhat bearable.
The acting is not too bad overall too, the movie feels very light and you can feel the vibe right from the get go, you quickly learn this movie will be bizzare and not serious in the slightest. Usually comedies tend to be relatively predictable, but this weird flick does the trick to surprise you every step of the way. It seems as if this movie generates hate and bad ratings simply due to its extra-ordinary premise, this should not be a factor when judging a comedy of this sort, since it was quite funny and entertaining at times, then again fun is kind of subjective, to each their own.
All in all, by no means is this film a comedy masterpiece of any sort, but i have a feeling it will be quite remerberable due to its off the charts strange plot, teenagers will love this little flick for sure.
1922 (2017)
Atmospheric, slow-paced, but also quite boring
The premise in itself is silly, kill your wife and absolutely ruin your family and life forever for some corn. Besides that the movie is beautifuly made and has amazing atmosphere to it, nevertheless slightly ruined by the sheer fact that you simply get bored watching it, it feels too drawn-out, since all the main action happens within the first 20 minutes of the movie.
With the main action being relegated to only the begining of this movie, the viewers get left with a boring, slow paced drama, where a crazy husband and son duo try to cope with the murder of their wife/mother. To be quite honest, there is not much action in this movie, you can clearly tell they are trying to introduce the whole psychological thriller type of vibe here, which does not quite work out that well. Sadly, we do not get to see much of the corn and what happens to it, in the begining i felt the corn will play a much large part in this film, since it was the main object of discussion at the start.
It is still worth seeing if you are into slow-paced, atmospheric movies with great scenery and not much dialogue. There will certainly be people out there, who will love this movie, so watch it and judge for yourself!
American Assassin (2017)
Great premise derailed by poor screenwriting
The movie starts out fairly well, giving us an interesting premise of a revenge assassin film, the first 20 minutes continue on this note, just to be quickly derailed into yet another american propaganda flick, therefore completely losing its potential.
This move should not be called ''American Assassin'', since there really is not that much assasination going on, so to speak, this film is more about international spying/espionage than assasinating targets.
Anyways, seems like Dylan O'Brian has found a decent genre for himself, as i would not go as far as to say he was bad in this mediocre little flick, O'Brian clearly showed he is serious, when it comes to pursuing his acting career as an action movie star, eventhough the movie was quite blatant and not as witty as you would expect, he still delivered some intense, action packed moments for us to enjoy.
Overall not great, a mediocre action movie to say the least, something you will surely forgot in a matter of days. Watch only when bored and do not expect clever plot/interesting or original scenes, go in expecting some mediocre fighting scenes and spying.
Vacation (2015)
A great modern road trip comedy
Do not let the 6.1 star rating here in imdb fool you, for a modern road trip comedy this was amazing. Rarely have i seen a comedy with so many original scenes and witty dialogue, the producers of this movie have really tried hard to stay away from comedy movie cliches to create something fresh and funny.
Ed Helms is simply amazing in this movie, if you like his roles in ''The Office'' or ''Hangover'', expect the same character here, he surely has not lost his charm and talent over the years. For some reason this movie feels a bit different when compared to other modern comedies of this type, it certainly brings something fresh to the table in a genre almost impossible to bring anything new to.
This movie is obviously a bit over the top, awkward and cringy at times, but that plays out greatly when Ed Helms is the main character, of course, Ed Helms delivers his classic awkward cringe worthy character perfectly making this into an amazing modern comedy. Do not look at the bad reviews and ratings, this is a great, action packed, funny comedy that is worth seeing!
Most Likely to Die (2015)
Your typical boring slasher
Nothing original here, a movie you will forget within hours of watching it. The same old classic slasher film cliches regurgitated once again into this little, boring slasher flick.
Filled with unintelligent and straight up stupid dialogue, as expected, this movie fails to create any suspense, so whenever one of the kids gets killed you simply couldn't care less, since the writers have completely failed setting the atmosphere of this movie, you can see where it is going right from the start. In my opinion, we have had more than enough of the same recycled slasher films over the years and it simply is the time to stop and move on from this genre, at least for a couple of years, because this type of horror has been witnessed so many times throughout the years it has gotten completely mondane and boring. People are not looking for shock value in movies anymore, hence the low ratings here.
Also, the plot twist is absolutely ridiculous and could very well be one of the dumbest i have ever seen, simply put this film has a horrible ending. Another thing to point out, the lighting/sound effects in this film were surprisingly bad, the location was great, but clearly somebody was not doing their job right, when it came to lighting/sound effects.
Overall ''Most Likely To Die'' is your casual, boring slasher horror film, which brings absolutely nothing new to the horror genre and will be forgotten almost instantly after viewing. Do not recommend watching this in the slightest!
Father of the Year (2018)
Not a bad comedy for a Netflix original
Do not look at the 1 star reviews here on imdb, for a Netflix comedy it was actually pretty decent and had far more original funny scenes than i had anticipated, of course some of the scenes were cringy, but that is besides the point, it is supposed to be an over the top teen comedy.
David Spade and Nat Faxon were great in this movie, usually not the biggest fan of these actors, can not understand why people give this movie horrible reviews/ratings. This film is just simple, dumb fun and nothing more, do not take it seriously, sit back, relax and enjoy the dumb Adam Sandler type of fun.
Ich seh, Ich seh (2014)
Artsy, but not original
This movie definitely has that artsy, slow paced, mellow feel to it, which i absolutely loved, you can clearly see the distinction between Hollywood and foreign films here, it was not overly dramatic as opposed to Hollywood films of this sort and had a good steady pace, which sadly got ruined a bit towards the end.
The plot twist was really blatant, they had an excellent premise and in my opinion they should have just went with the original idea of this not being the real mother, instead they pulled the good old - dead sibling cliche and revealed it only at the end, but any experienced psychological horror fan had already gathered that ages before the reveal.
All in all, the movie is not that bad, it is different, has great atmosphere and scenery, despite all taking place at one location. Do not go into this movie looking for horror, gore or fast paced action, this is a different kind of thriller, and not that bad of a watch, if you are tired from classic Hollywood horror and action scenes!
How It Ends (2018)
Nobody knows what is happening
In this movie nobody knows what is happening, including the writers, since we never get shown reasons behind anything. The movie has a fair bit of action throughout, although it is quite boring and blatant at times, only one perspective is shown in this film, without any background information of anything else going on besides Will and Tom going on their pathetic rescue mission.
This movie has absolutely no plot if you think about it, there is a premise, there is a goal, but everything that happens is just plain dumb. Why is the weather changing? Why do we have all these insane deadly storms? Why is everybody out to get each other all of a sudden? There are no answers, it seems as if they just want to film useless action without needing to elaborate on what is actually going on. Also, this movie has one of the worst endings i have ever seen in any movie, peridod. That is if you can even call an ending, maybe it is an intended pun, since the name of the movie matches the actual ending accurately, How it ends? Nobody knows, even the writers did not know, they probably just got bored of filming useless action with no meaning and decided to go to a pub, since there will surely be people to watch it anyways, so why do we need an ending, right?
Overall, the movie is not great, would not recommend watching this since the plot is non-existant and at times really non-sensical too, paired with cringy cliche dialogues of a natural disaster action movie making it into a real mess. I can bet this film will have a sequel, since it was the most blatant open ending you could have imagined, stay tuned for the next part, maybe it will be better?
The Belko Experiment (2016)
Nothing new
A poor version of Battle Royale, nothing really original, as there have been numerous movies over the years sharing the same plot. There are lots of employees in this company, so the directors try to interest us in only a handful of them, which sadly does not go that well either, since we do not know any background information on any of these characters.
The vast majority of this film is extremely blatant and predictable, you feel as if you have watched this movie a hundred times, because this movie has no fresh ideas, they just recycle the old gory scenes from older cult classics of the genre. When you make a movie of this sort involving a large amount of people, you need a way to kill them off and quickly, which takes a huge amount of suspense and fun out of it, since more than half of the characters are utterly useless, running and screaming providing next to no entertainment. If a situation like this occured in reality more than 6 out of 80 would be ready to fight until death just to survive and return to their families. Instead of that the complete opposite happens in this film, people die for absolutely no reason without giving any effort to survive.
All in all, a movie you can easily pass on, nothing new, same old genre shticks overused into a compilation of really bloody and unoriginal scenes. The ending of this movie implies an obvious sequel, which could be a potential possibility to make things right, since the premise of this sequel seems to be much more interesting.
If you love this survival horror genre, there are far better movies to watch, for example, ''Battle Royale'', ''Nine Dead'', ''Circle'' and ''Exam'' just to name a few.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Stellar scenery and amazing atmosphere!
Do not go into this movie expecting horror or gore, this is movie is all about the atmosphere, calm and mellow at times, but surely intense enough throughout. Absolutely stunning imagery and scenery all throughout the film a it is set in a 1630's forest. The movie does not solely revolve around withcraft and magic as the title might lead one to believe, it takes a rather different approach giving us insight into the heavy religious influence in the 17th century.
Overall, the movie has a great vibe to it, watching a film like this makes you forget about the usual appeals of horror/thriller movies as you easily get sucked into the atmosphere of this movie even without much crazy and intense action you are feeling the rising tension between the close-knit family as the eldest daugther becomes suspected as a witch. Note that there is an enourmous religious prejudice and bias in this movie as it is all about god worship and being an obedient person living out god's will. If you have a problem with the heavy religious tone this movie has, i would suggest not watching it, because i can understand how redundant that can get at times.
A really relaxing, but tense film, that is worth watching for many different reasons, do not expect gore or horror as i have said above, enjoy the sound effects, beautiful imagery and the usage of old english, which is rather rare in movies and art nowadays!
6 Souls (2010)
Psychological thriller turned into a religious voodoo movie
The first half of the movie is an in-depth psychological thriller, where a psychologist, played by none other than Juliane Moore, is investigating an interesting patient, who seems to be suffering from split personality disorder
It gets really interesting as we get taken deeper and deeper into the lives of his split personalities, everything seems to add up and form a strong plot, up until they decide to ruin this movie in a sense by introducing a new reality - turns out these are not split personalities, but souls. This turns everything upside down and now this is a religious voodo shaman type of movie with witchraft and exorcisms. In my opinion, you can only go one way or the other, the premise was really great, up until the half way point i was really intruiged purely by the psychological investigation and delving deeper into the minds of Adam/David.
The movie is not horrible nor is it great, they should have gone with the premise without introducing all the voodoo witchcraft. Nonetheless there is great acting, beautiful scenery at times and by no means it is a boring watch! Watch and decide for yourself, not the worst flick you will ever see.
The Open House (2018)
Really, really bad
Actually surprised there are still directors out there trying to make these kind of half-assed irrelevant pieces of trash, nothing in this movie made sense, the beggining was promising, but everything following that was absolutely irrelevant, non-original and straight up boring.
The antagonist was never introduced nor did they have any reason for attacking the protagonists of this movie, really unreasonable and confusing. Feels like this movie was just compiled of random scenes and characters doing absolutely irrelevant actions creating a messy plot, if we can call it a plot, to be quite frank it really seemed very unorganized, nothing felt reasonable in this movie. When you do not have a strong premise for any actions in a movie, it is incredibly hard to create and justify the reasoning behind actions, so we can see in this movie, everything was utterly pointless creating a large mashup of boring and drawn out scenes leading into nothingness.
Another thing i would like to point out, the sound effects used in this movie were absolutely dreadful, an utter pile of dire garbage sound effects thrown in every random scene to make it more suspensful for no reason, since this film did not have clever jump scares or scary moments the directors were reduced to creating suspense purely by sound effects, which failed miserably. Interestingly enough this movie does not have an ending so to speak or you could say the ending was so stupid it was laughable.
Overall, a really bad movie, would never recommend to anybody, nothing original, plain stupid actions mashed together hoping people will enjoy it. A big fail of a film, do not watch!
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Stop taking this franchise so seriously, just enjoy
I will say exactly what i said about the second film - it is an action packed PG-13 sci-fi action movie for teenagers, it is not to be critically dismembered like an amazing psychological drama, it is pure action for kids to enjoy.
Is it a bad movie? No, you just have to watch it with the right mindset. Do not expect clever plot twists, intelligent dialogue or original and witty scenes Expect hollywood action movie cliche after cliche and just sit back, relax and enjoy the shooting, running, chasing and stuff getting blown up non-stop for more than 2 hours. This movie never stops when it comes to action, it starts with loads of it and never eases the tension, there's always something bigger happening, a remarkable achievement on that front.
This movie has done an absolutely excellent job entertaining the target audience, more serious movie critics simply need to come down from their high horses and realize this movie is not to be taken seriously. Know what you are watching before you are watching it, since this is already part 3 of the franchise everyone should know fairly well what they are heading into. Have an open mind, relax and enjoy!
