Halsey has shared a new single, “Ego.” The guitar-driven song draws its inspiration from the Nineties, featuring anthemic vocals and a propulsive chorus that pays homage to bands like Garbage and No Doubt. The singer encouraged fans to “listen closely” to the song.
“I think that I should try to kill my ego,” Halsey howls on the track. “‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me/ I’m all grown up but somehow lately/ I’m acting like a fucking baby/ I’m really not as happy as I seem.

Halsey fans won’t have to wait long for the singer’s fifth album. Halsey announced that her upcoming album The Great Impersonator will arrive Oct. 25, and also revealed one version of the forthcoming project’s art: a wide-eyed, rosy-cheeked self portrait that resembles a clipping from a newspaper ad.
“I made this record in the space between life and death,” Halsey wrote on social media. “And it feels like I’ve waited an eternity for you to have it. I’ll wait a bit longer. I’ve waited a decade,...

Britney Spears‘ “Lucky” is one of her best songs. Halsey reinterpreted the track in a completely different genre and changed its lyrics for the worse. It’s also not clear if Halsey can pull off a song like “Lucky” at this point in her life. While Halsey’s tribute to the Princess of Pop is commendable on some level, it’s not worth your time.
Britney Spears’ ‘Lucky’ wasn’t as narcissistic as Halsey’s song of the same name
Spears’ “Lucky” is a ballad about a girl named Lucky who cries at night despite being at the top of the Hollywood pyramid. You don’t even have to listen to the song all the way through to understand that it’s a thinly-veiled song about Spears’ life in showbiz. Of course, making the song about a fictional character prevents the track from feeling like self-pity.
It also broadens the song’s appeal.

Halsey has officially kicked off their new album cycle with an homage to Y2K-era pop. “Lucky” interpolates both Britney Spears’ hit of the same name as well as Monica’s “Angel of Mine.”
On “Lucky,” Halsey reflects on their complicated relationship with navigating health issues, motherhood, and heartbreak while in the public eye. The raw, honest new single has the singer, who uses she/they pronouns, reflecting on her own desire to be seen and heard as she pursued this career as a teenager without realizing the sacrifices and...

South Australian Anthony Frith’s close encounter with “Sharknado” prodco The Asylum in “Mockbuster” is among five handpicked titles to be showcased at the Adelaide Film Festival Goes to Cannes showcase, held at Cannes Marché du Film on May 17.
The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

The year of 1998 belonged to R&b singer Monica.
She not only topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a whopping 13 weeks with “The Boy Is Mine,” her duet with Brandy, she launched another hit with “The First Night,” which logged five weeks on top of the pop charts. No other artist in that year spent more weeks at No. 1 than Monica.
Both songs appeared on her sophomore album, The Boy Is Mine, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Not only did Monica dominate 1998 — her success spilled over to 1999: Her album’s third single, “Angel of Mine,” also became a No. 1 Hot 100 hit and was the third most-successful song of that year.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.

If ever you get a chance to play cards for money with Kelly Clarkson, take it — she has no poker face. Hence, her “restrained” reaction (pictured) to Tuesday’s resolution of The Voice’s Monday-night cliffhanger.

But then Holly revealed that “I grew up listening to Kelly Clarkson,” so she was the coach that the contender wanted.

Heading into the fourth blind audition episode of “The Voice” Season 21, John Legend and Ariana Grande led with seven artists each on their teams. To compare, Blake Shelton (aka Ariana’s “grandpa”) had six artists and Kelly Clarkson only had five artists. There also weren’t any blocks left in play, as Ariana used hers the previous night to stop John from acquiring Holly Forbes on his team. That episode ended with a cliffhanger, with Holly about to choose her coach.

An unwavering belief that things will work out is not easily maintained in these uncertain times, but it can prove powerful when it comes to making a film on a micro-budget, according to Darius Devas.

Erika Addis, head of cinematography at Griffith Film School and Australian Cinematographers Society (Acs) Queensland president and national vice-president, chairs Acs’ Women’s Advisory Panel. She reflects on why cinematography remains male-dominated.
I’m frequently asked ‘Why are there so few women cinematographers?’ I do speculate on the reasons, but the answer is not simple.
Cinematographers need a combination of creativity, technical ability, spatial skills, people skills and stamina – both mental and physical. None of these capacities should be a bar to women entering the camera department on the basis of gender alone. That said, the chronically low rates of women employed as director of photography or camera operator are astonishing.
When I started out in film in 1974, women were excluded from all kinds of workplaces. I didn’t see any other women around in technical roles and it was unusual to be a female in the camera department.

Next month, Hulu will ring in Valentine’s Day with some counterprogramming. The streaming service will debut its original series “High Fidelity,” a gender-swapped reimagining of Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name. Previously, the book was adapted into a 2000 movie from Stephen Frears starring John Cusack. Zoë Kravitz stars as Rob Brooks, a music-obsessive record store owner in Brooklyn re-examining her previous romantic relationships to figure out what went wrong.
On the film front, the “Bridget Jones” trilogy, “Buffalo ’66,” “The Fugitive,” “Ghost” and “When Harry Met Sally” are among the new selections being offered in February. Releases from last year, like “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” and “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” are also making their way onto the platform.
New seasons of reality series like “The Voice” and “American Idol” will also be available to stream later in the month.

Sixteen-year-old high school student Zoe Upkins just had a wild night on “The Voice.” First, she became the final member of John Legend‘s Season 17 team following her blind audition performance of Monica‘s “Angel of Mine,” which also caused Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton to turn their chairs around. Then this Nashville, Tennessee native lost her battle to Khalea Lynee and was nearly eliminated … until John swooped in to save her. Watch Zoe’s “The Voice” blind audition video above.

‘Ride Like a Girl’.
Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl will take the crown of highest grossing Australian film on home soil this year.
Meanwhile the low visibility and modest returns from limited releases including Kim Farrant’s Angel of Mine, Sophie Hyde’s Animals and Rodd Rathjen’s Buoyancy have prompted renewed calls from exhibitors to address the challenges facing most Aussie films in the crowded theatrical market.
Griffiths’ biopic starring Teresa Palmer as ground-breaking jockey Michelle Payne pocketed nearly $4 million in its first eight days, including $317,000 on Thursday.
So the Transmission Films release co-starring Sam Neill as Payne’s father Paddy and her brother Stevie Payne as himself will overtake Palm Beach’s $4.4 million this weekend and will zoom past Top End Wedding’s $5.2 million and Storm Boy’s $5 million.
Exhibitors are confident the film is heading for upwards of $10 million and could reach Ladies in Black’s $12 million.

‘Downton Abbey’ (Photo: Universal Pictures).
It is a rare feat to translate a six season network TV hit into box office bankability but Downton Abbey loyalists have swarmed to the occasion, with the Universal Pictures film adaptation steam-training to the top of the box office, attracting $3.2 million in its opening last weekend across 502 screens.
Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 also bowed over the weekend, clinching third spot and $1.5 million in revenue, with the Andy Muschietti directed It Chapter Two nestled in at number two.
Warner Bros’ It sequel has helped to resuscitate Australian Bo fortunes, having already amassed $11 million in just two weeks. The horror brought in $3.2 million over the weekend, boasting the highest screen average for any film at $8,684.
Overall, the top 20 titles rung up $10.7 million over the weekend, down 2 per cent on last week, according to the Motion Pictures Association of Australia (Mpdaa).

‘Top End Wedding’, ‘Hearts and Bones’ and ‘The King’ are among the 34 longlisted films.
Some 34 feature films will compete for nominations for this year’s Aacta Awards, and the longlist covers a diverse range of titles, from box office earners like Top End Wedding and Storm Boy, through to critically lauded films like The Nightingale and micro budget indies such as Suburban Wildlife.
However, perhaps the most notable inclusion in the longlist is David Michôd’s Netflix Original The King, which premiered at Venice Film Festival last week to an eight-minute standing ovation.
Typically, to be eligible for Aacta Awards, a film – even when made for a streaming platform – must have paid cinema screenings in Australia or local festival play.

‘It Chapter Two.’ (Photo credit: Warner Bros.)
Warner Bros/New Line’s It Chapter Two and Roadshow’s Chinese-American dramedy The Farewell gave the flagging Australian box office a much needed jolt last weekend while two new Oz releases struggled.
Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine and Alan Lindsay’s romantic comedy The Naked Wanderer faced the same challenge which has bedeviled most Australian films this year: Opening on limited screens with minimal P&a, which means low visibility in the marketplace. So relying primarily on reviews, publicity and word of mouth is no guarantee to draw audiences.
Starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Annika Whiteley, Finn Little, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh and Rob Collins, Farrant’s follow-up to Strangerland grossed $26,000 on 42 screens and $43,000 including festival screenings for R&r Films.

‘Angel of Mine.’
Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine began its theatrical journey in the Us last weekend, opening in 12 key cities and on demand.
The distributor Lionsgate did not share any Bo figures for the movie starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski and Annika Whiteley, which are typically modest for a multi-platform release.
The upside will come from the October 22 release on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital followed in February by the premiere on Hulu, Disney’s streaming platform which has 28 million subscribers in the Us.
Produced by Brian Etting, Josh Etting and Su Armstrong, the movie adapted by Lion’s Luke Davies and David Regal from the 2008 French film L’Empreinte de L’Ange had its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival. It will open here this Thursday on 41 screens via Robert Slaviero and Richard Becker’s R & R Films.

Yvonne Strahovski is not afraid of a challenge, whether it’s bringing to life Serena Waterford, a Commander’s wife of a totalitarian society yearning for a child of her own on “The Handmaid’s Tale“, or taking on the twists and turns of a woman accused of taking her neighbor’s child in the new thriller, “Angel of Mine”. Single mom Lizzie (Noomi Rapace) carpools through an idyllic Melbourne neighborhood with the hedgerows in a blur, which is “Angel of Mine” director Kim Farrant’s way of establishing that this woman on the verge of a suburban breakdown can’t see past her nose. Between her divorce, her constant crying, her mental hospital stays and her dead-end job as a makeup clerk, Lizzie’s young son (Finn Little) needs more of her affection. “He feels your darkness,” warns her ex Mike (Luke Evans), who’s threatening to file for full custody. Yet, Lizzie only has eyes for acquaintance Claire’s (Yvonne Strahovski) 7-year-old daughter Lola (Annika Whiteley), a perfect moppet who could be Lizzie’s own daughter, if her infant hadn’t died in a hospital fire — a plot point that screenwriters Luke Davies and David Regal delay until we’re itchy for the script to blurt it out,...

A standout performance from Rapace as a mother looking for her dead daughter lifts a psychological thriller that otherwise strains credulity
Maternal longing is a key theme in director Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine, which takes what could have been a simple stalker movie premise and fills it out with an intense array of emotions. The film hinges on a head-turning, knife edge performance from Noomi Rapace, whose startled eyes and haunted countenance have an apparitional quality – destined to be burned into the audience’s psyche like a hot iron.
In this Melbourne-set feature, an adaptation of the 2008 French film L’Empreinte de L’Ang, Rapace plays Lizzie, whose young daughter died in a fire several years ago but who begins to entertain the possibility that she is still alive. ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.

A parent’s biggest nightmare has to be the idea that a stranger could kidnap their child. Most of the time, when you imagine such a scenario, it’s some weirdo in an unmarked van that preys on children, offering candy and whatnot. But in the case of the film “Angel of Mine,” the predator in question is a mentally ill woman going through an extreme case of Ptsd.

"Every time I see Lola, I'm more convinced..." "Convinced of what...?" Lionsgate has debuted the official trailer for an indie film titled Angel of Mine, the second feature film made by Australian filmmaker Kim Farrant. Described as an "intense thriller", the film stars Noomi Rapace as a grieving mother struggling to cope with the loss of her infant daughter. Her fraught emotional state puts her on edge, and she begins to believe the daughter of a neighbor is actually her own. This also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh, Finn Little, Rob Collins, Rachel Gordon, Tracy Mann, and Emily Gruhl, with Annika Whiteley. This looks mega creepy and extra terrifying, what a twist on a story of grief. Goodness. Noomi Rapace is walking down a dark path.
In a People exclusive trailer of Angel of Mine, the 39-year-old actress stars Lizzie, a woman on the edge of a psychotic break after losing her infant daughter in a hospital accident.
Rapace gives a strong performance opposite The Handmaid’s Tale’s Golden Globe nominee Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Lizzie’s neighbor, Claire, in the thriller.
The two women become at odds with each other when Lizzie begins to believe Claire’s daughter is her own.

The Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) has unveiled the first 29 films on its line-up this year, including the world premiere of Good Thing Productions and Passion Pictures’ The Australian Dream which will open the festival August 1.
The documentary, written by Stan Grant and directed by Brit Daniel Gordon, looks at race, identity and belonging from the perspective of former Sydney Swans captain and Indigenous rights activist Adam Goodes, who in 2013 sparked a national conversation about racism after requesting a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter be removed from the ground after calling him an “ape”.
