‘The Voice’ season 21 episode 4 recap: Which coach did Holly Forbes choose? [UPDATING LIVE BLOG]

Heading into the fourth blind audition episode of “The Voice” Season 21, John Legend and Ariana Grande led with seven artists each on their teams. To compare, Blake Shelton (aka Ariana’s “grandpa”) had six artists and Kelly Clarkson only had five artists. (Don’t worry though, by the end of the blinds each team will be even with 12 artists apiece.) There also weren’t any blocks left in play, as Ariana used hers the previous night to stop John from acquiring Holly Forbes on his team. That episode ended with a cliffhanger, with Holly about to choose her coach.

8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In the third episode, seven additional artists made it onto the show because of their blind audition performances. The Joy Reunion and Carson Peters joined Team Blake, Keilah Grace and Samara Brown joined Team Legend, Jeremy Rosado joined Team Kelly, and Raquel Trinidad and Hailey Mia joined Team Ariana. Which blind auditioners will stand out tonight? And which team will Holly choose? Let’s go!

8:01 p.m. – Settling first things first, despite Ariana using her block on John, Holly decided to join Team Kelly! Bad use of your first block, Ari, but maybe you can get her in a future round?

8:02 p.m. – Next up we heard from pop singer Bella DeNapoli, a member of a very tight family that sings together and even helped her prepare her acoustic version of “Damaged” for the audition. When Bella hit a particularly strong note toward the end of the song, all at once Ariana, John and Kelly each hit their buttons at the same time, leaving Blake in the dust. John was interested in the new arrangement of the song that she performed with notes that both Kelly and Ariana could have sang themselves. Kelly was into the different colors of her voice and said that it would be “fun as hell” to work with her. Ariana called her tone and control great and hoped that she could work with her to explore all the tools she has in her voice. Considering the similarities in their vocal approach, it was no surprise that Bella joined Team Ariana.

8:12 p.m. – Also taking a different approach with their song choice, David Vogel took on his own guitar-focused rework of Ariana’s song “Breathin'” for his audition. He had a goal of Ariana turning around for him, but she refrained until the very last second! She was the only one to turn around so he automatically joined her team. Ariana thought his version of the song was cool and she really appreciated that he’s a musician with the ability to play instruments.

8:21 p.m.Janora Brown remembers a childhood full of singing with her sisters, one of which she sang “Angel of Mine” for tonight. John and Kelly were moved almost immediately to turn their chairs, but after two successful artist grabs Ariana sat this out, as did Blake (again). John said that he was impressed by the tight run at the beginning and that later in the song her voice cut through the lyrics perfectly. Kelly went straight into coach mode and told Janora she could help her round out her notes to make full impact of her voice. Opening his arms wide and pleading for her to join his team, John won out and gained his newest member.

8:31 p.m. – Having already put out seven songs online, Kaitlyn Velez came to the show ready to vault her career to the next level and to show her own authenticity on “Please Don’t Go.” Though Kailtyn had aimed at joining Ariana’s team, only John and Blake turned for her. John loved her vibrato and advised her that he can help open up her voice more for future performances. Blake recognized that Kaitlyn is a songwriter because of her ukulele playing and that’s why he turned around. Both guys said that no one sounds like Kaitlyn and she’ll have her own niche on either team, but she felt best about joining Team Blake.

8:38 p.m. – Blake also brought over guitarist Berritt Haynes as the only chair to turn for his audition of “Mercy.” Berritt came to the show as part of Make-a-Wish. Clint Sherman followed the same auto-join path to Team Blake with “Brown Eyed Girl,” a song Blake has covered himself many times.

8:43 p.m.Kayla Lilly‘s mom swears that singing Mariah and Whitney to her while she was pregnant is how Kayla learned to sing. Surprisingly, Kayla did not sing a song by either, but chose “Never Enough” instead. Kelly and Ariana were on the precipice of turning, but didn’t and so Kayla did not join a team. Ariana explained that it was a bit inconsistent and she needs to find balance. John liked the soaring in the higher notes, but she was off her foot prior to that.

8:54 p.m. – Yet another group took the stage this season–pop gospel duo The Cunningham Sisters. Sticking to their lane, the girls sang “Never Alone” to win over the coaches. Kelly was the first coach to turn, followed by a jamming out John. Ariana looked like she would eventually turn as she worked out that it was a duo not a solo artist, but didn’t and then looked disappointed to not be in the hunt. John and Kelly were eager to bring the girls over to their team, often talking over each other to prove who has more of a connection to their personal story. John pointed out that he’s the only team without a duo or trio yet and that they’d have a wide open lane with him. Once again she decided to begin coaching them now, saying that they need to know how to blend so that they can each shine in moments. John countered by discussing how good he is at harmonizing voices. It seemed like a clear decision to make (John), but they shocked everyone by going over to Team Kelly instead!
