The year was 1963, and Clint Eastwood was tired of playing a Western hero. As Rowdy Yates on CBS' "Rawhide," he was stuck in a flavorless rut of white-hat derring-do, herding cattle and being an altogether swell guy while contending with stock genre villains. There was a future in this, yes, but it would require Eastwood to play the same note over and over until he became a lasso-wielding self-parody.
So, when he wrapped his fifth season of "Rawhide," he accepted an offer to make a big screen Western with a promising Italian director in Spain. That film was "A Fistful of Dollars," and all it did was launch the "Spaghetti Western" trend, which, along with the revisionist American works of Sam Peckinpah, extended the popularity of the genre for a solid decade.

With only three stellar features to her name in the last two-plus decades, The Forest for the Trees, Everyone Else, and Toni Erdmann, every new film from Maren Ade comes with much anticipation. While she’s also stayed busy producing no shortage of great work with Tabu, Arabian Nights, Western, In My Room, The Whistlers, Ahed’s Knee, Corsage, About Dry Grasses, and more, the German filmmaker is now working on her fourth feature.
In an interview with Screen Daily, Komplizen Film producer Janine Jackowski revealed Ade is scripting her next film Zauberwort (aka Magic Word), with plans to shoot in 2026, which means a festival premiere is still likely three years away. “[Ade] is writing very intensely. She is working very hard,” said Jackowski, though was tight-lipped about any other details on the project.

„Horizon“ wird in Deutschland unverändert an den kommunizierten Startterminen als Eventstart in die Kinos kommen, wie auch der Kinostart des zweiten Teils unberührt von den aktuellen Entwicklungen in den USA ist. Das teilt Tobis mit, die die deutschen Auswertungsrechte an dem Westernepos von Kevin Costner hält.

Warner Bros. Discovery, which was formed in 2022 from the merger of AT&T’s WarnerMedia and Discovery Communications, has agreed to pay $125 million to settle a shareholder lawsuit over the deal.
A handful of pension funds filed suit in Delaware Chancery Court after the $43 billion merger closed, alleging that the transaction unfairly benefited top-tier investors at Discovery at the expense of everyday investors. On Friday, the court released a document detailing the settlement, which had been agreed to in May at the recommendation of a mediator.
Once Delaware Chancery Judge Travis Laster approves the agreement, holders of Discovery stock prior to the merger closing date in April 2022 will be eligible to receive funds from the settlement.
Defendants in the suit included a set of former Discovery backers, including the Advance/Newhouse Partnership and Robert Miron; his son, Steven Miron; and Susan Swain. All are former members of Discovery’s board of directors.

Arriving on August 13th from Dead Sky Publishing, Hell's Cargo (written by Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason) takes you to the "wild and splatter-y west" for a horror tale you won't want to miss! Just for Daily Dead readers, we have an exclusive look at the cover by artist Luke Spooner!
"Religion, attraction, and possession collide in the wild and splatter-y west as a pair of young lovers balance their feelings for one another against their deep calling to serve their faith.
Eve wants to be a nun, and Peter a priest, but is their attraction for one another stronger than the call to serve?
Eve becomes possessed by a demon and this sets off a trail of murder, sex, and fire across Texas, and Arizona as the couple head to California for an exorcism.
Dusty western towns, sunbaked mountains, and forgotten cemeteries prove to be the perfect places for the devil to hide.

Exclusive: The first images from writer-director Joel Souza’s Western Rust starring Alec Baldwin have emerged. Deadline has the first look.
Late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ visual style can be seen in two of the photos: the one of actress Frances Fisher in the doorway, and one of the lone rider to the right of the screen.
See the first-look photos below.
The other three photographs are the work of Dp Bianca Cline, who took over for Hutchins when the production resumed in April 2023 at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. The restart came 18 months after Hutchins was killed by a bullet from a prop gun held by Baldwin that discharged during rehearsals on Rust‘s New Mexico set.
Rust is based on a story developed by Souza and Baldwin: A 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas,...

Exclusive: A surprise project has emerged to whet the appetites of hungry international buyers at next week’s American Film Market: Kevin Costner’s big-budget Warner Bros Western Horizon: An American Saga.
The two-part project is being sold to international buyers by recently rebooted German-based sales firm K5 International.
Chapters 1 and 2 of Horizon have been set by New Line to open domestically in cinemas on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024, respectively. That strong theatrical commitment is something that will appeal to international buyers, and some we’ve spoken with are already enthused about getting a sighter at a big-budget movie from an Oscar winner like Costner, even if prices are inevitably high.
We hear that Costner himself will likely take a view on offers in major territories, which isn’t unusual for an A-list director-producer working on a passion project, especially given that he has reportedly put a chunk of his own money into it.

Kevin Costner‘s estranged wife, Christine Baumgartner, has requested that the court force the star to produce “all statements, receipts, invoices, canceled checks (front and back) and other documents … relating to any extramarital romantic relationships” as part of her quest to dig into the actor’s finances amid their contentious divorce battle.

For as long as American media has existed, so too has the allure of a Western. Stories set in the Wild West play an outsized role in the country’s self-mythology, and one of the genre’s favorite tropes is the duel between two opposing gunfighters. These duels often came down to one simple question: who was the fastest in the West? It turns out that few had the reflexes or mental sharpness of Nick Barkley, a character on the show The Big Valley played by Peter Breck.
Breck was one of many actors who learned to fire their weapons accurately in no time. But who was the quickest? It’s a question without a definitive answer.

It may have taken Nic Cage over 40 years to play Dracula in "Renfield," but he previously donned fangs for one of his most out-there performances in "Vampire's Kiss."
It's kind of surprising that it's taken this long for Nicolas Cage to play Count Dracula. If any actor was born to play the most famous vampire on the planet then surely it was our generation's most unpredictable screen legend. Now he's getting his chance in the comedy "Renfield," where he stars alongside Nicholas Hoult, who plays Dracula's beleaguered goon in the midst of an identity crisis. Cage has always expressed interest in vampire lore. He produced the 2000 film "Shadow of the Vampire," a fictionalized version of the making of "Nosferatu" that imagines what would have happened if an actual vampire had been among the cast. Mostly, however, his highly specific strain of acting has been saved for playing mere mortals. There...

Gunsmoke set a record as the longest-running scripted television show on primetime with 20 seasons under its belt between 1955 and 1975. It went down in history as one of the greatest Western dramas ever to hit the screen, but some fans would argue that the awards season didn’t give it the attention that it deserved. Gunsmoke won five Emmy Awards over its 20 seasons, although none of them went to lead actor James Arness.

Gunsmoke initially started as a radio show in 1952 before it made its way to television. Diehard fans of the radio show were upset to hear that the voice cast wouldn’t return to play the iconic characters on television. Nevertheless, Gunsmoke...

Sarah Polley’s Oscar for her Women Talking script has not actually been rescinded by the Film Academy, despite her 11-year-old child’s valiant April Fools’ Day effort to suggest otherwise.
The filmmaker, who picked up the vaunted prize for best adapted screenplay last month, shared a letter to Twitter on Saturday that she attributed to her child. The prank involved a typed-out message stating that Polley must send back the trophy in order for it to be given to the team behind Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front, who were the actual winners, according to the note. The letter ended with a signoff from Academy president David Rubin, forged signature and all.

The scripted pilot based on Jessica Simpson’s bestselling memoir “Open Book” is not moving forward at Amazon Freevee, Variety has confirmed. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s period comedy “Western” has also been scrapped, though both potential series are now being shopped elsewhere.
The pilot for “Open Book” was ordered by Amazon Freevee back in October, with Tom Kapinos set to write and executive produce and Adam Bernstein on board as a director and executive producer. Katelyn Tarver would play Sadie Sparrow, a young singer based on Simpson, while John Stamos was cast as her older songwriter, Butch. Over time, the two would develop a connection that went beyond music.
Simpson was set to executive produce the project, along with Patrick Moran for his Pkm Productions and Amazon Studios. Lauren Auslander and Lacy Lynch were also on board as executive producers.

Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos took home statuettes for their work on Dune at the Academy Awards on Sunday, with Vermette paying “special” tribute to his “friend” Jean-Marc Vallée—the Canadian filmmaker behind Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club and more, who died suddenly in December, aged 58.
Vermette also thanked director Denis Villeneuve “for allowing us to dream” and “for being a great friend,” saying, “I owe this to you.”
“I’m such a crybaby, I’m sorry,” added Sipos. “It means an awful lot and I just want to thank my team and everyone who participated, and for the opportunity.”

“Succession” has done what only two dramas before it have done: successfully sweep the top four guilds in the same calendar year.
The road to the history books started in late February when “Succession,” which follows the messy and complicated Roy family led by patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox), took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for drama ensemble on its first nomination. It quickly followed that up with the Directors Guild of America Award for dramatic series directing, which went to Mark Mylod (who is also an executive producer on the show) for helming the game-changing Season 3 finale, “All the Bells Say.” Of course, “Succession” was always going home a winner at the latter since the series swept the nominations, earning five bids in a historic first for the DGA.

Jane Campion scooped the top prize of the night at the DGA Awards on Saturday — the Theatrical Feature Film award — for her Western The Power of the Dog.
This honor at DGA is historically the biggest predictor of who will win Best Director at Oscar, so Campion should get ready for more possible directing gold in two weeks’ time.
DGA Awards 2022: Deadline’s Full Coverage
In fact, since 1948, the winner of this award has won the Best Director Oscar every year, with only eight exceptions.
“I’m so really moved and honored by this voting for me,” Campion said in her acceptance speech, before thanking “my teacher, the master, Paul Thomas Anderson” — who also was DGA-nominated for Licorice Pizza.
Presenting her with the award was Chloé Zhao, who took home this same award last year for Nomadland, which predictably won her Best Director at the Academy Awards — and Best Picture too.

Prime Video announced on Wednesday that its western thriller series “Outer Range,” starring Josh Brolin, will premiere April 15 on Prime Video with a two-episode premiere.
In the official teaser trailer, which dropped on Wednesday, Brolin’s Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott says a highly unusual prayer at the dinner table: “Dear God … we ask that you show us the way here, because we’re in trouble. You made this crazy world, so maybe you can give us some sort of hint as to what you’re up to. Because I don’t have the first f—ing clue.”
The trailer, which brings the western setting of “Yellowstone” and the freaky “what the hell is happening?” vibe from “Yellowjackets,” shows glimpses of strange symbols, blood, a police chase, a dead bear and Lili Taylor seemingly communicating with an unseen entity, ends with Brolin screaming, “There is a great void!”

Sandra Oh’s Ji-Yoon Kim makes academic history in Netflix’s The Chair premiere — but her achievement comes with some serious drawbacks, too.
In the six-episode comedy that dropped in full on Friday, Oh stars as the first female and woman of color to serve as chair of the English department at the fictional Pembroke University. In the series premiere, though, she doesn’t get much time to bask in that milestone; in fact, her actual office chair breaks and collapses about three seconds into her first day on the job, which, in hindsight, she should have taken as some sort of omen.

The move is an interesting one given the often nebulous data put out by many of the more established streamers. This morning, in a rare feat, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross pulled a pair of Original Score nominations for Soul and Mank.
Throughout film history, we’ve often seen a single composer earn two Academy Award nominations for different films, in the same year. The most recent to do so was Alexandre Desplat, who was nominated in 2014 for both The Imitation Game and The Grand Budapest Hotel. (Desplat won for the latter film).
But composer duos are another thing altogether.
While Edward Plumb and Paul Smith earned two Score noms way back in 1943, for the films Saludos Amigos and Victory Through Air Power, those came in the separate categories of Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture, and Scoring of a Musical Picture.

In another sluggish session at the domestic box office, Liam Neeson once again proved to be Mr. Reliable by holding onto the top spot for the second straight weekend with his latest outing, The Marksman. For non-fans or players, chess has never exactly been considered the most exciting thing in the world, which only makes it all the more impressive that The Queen’s Gambit continues to dominate Netflix‘s most-watched list. Hollywood had been trying to get an adaptation of Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel off the ground for years, of course, and over a decade ago, Ellen Page was set to play the lead role of Beth Harmon with Heath Ledger making his directorial debut before the actor’s untimely passing.

Following his star turn in “Jauja,” a major hit at the 2014 Cannes Festival, Viggo Mortensen will re-team with Argentine director Lisandro Alonso on “Eureka,” one of the boldest upcoming art films from Latin America.
Mortensen, who takes the lead role in “Eureka’s” first part, will be joined by France’s Chiara Mastroianni, a Cesar Award best actress nominee this year for “On a Magical Night,” and Portugal’s Maria de Medeiros (“Pulp Fiction”).
In a nod towards “Jauja,” Mortensen once more takes the role of a father, here Murphy, searching for a daughter, again played by Denmark’s Viilbjørk Malling Agger, who has been kidnapped in “Eureka” by an outlaw, Randall. Despite the actors reprising similar roles, the film is not a sequel.
In addition, the setting for Part 1 of “Eureka,” entitled “Western,” is no longer Argentina’s Patagonia but a lawless township in 1870 on the U.S.-Mexico border,...

If there’s anything a viewer should take into the Ross brothers’ new film, “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” it’s a healthy disregard for conventional definitions of film genres or styles. A carefully staged and meticulously cast presentation disguised as a cinema verité documentary, it’s confounding if you feel compelled to put a label on it but raucously moving if you take it as a day-long adventure with a group of fascinating characters.
It’s “The Iceman Cometh” transplanted to the outskirts of Las Vegas or “Cheers” on the wrong side of town, a fiction/nonfiction blend where verité meets improv and the whole thing is shot through with the skid-row romanticism of a Tom Waits song or a Charles Bukowski poem. And with the action set in late 2016 with that year’s presidential election playing out on TV in the background, it’s a sad portrait of America...

One of the breakouts of the 2020 Sundance U.S. Documentary Competition was Bill and Turner Ross’ “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” a mind-bending look at the last night in business for a grimy Las Vegas dive bar. It’s set in late 2016, which means the whole world is on the brink of change. Releasing on July 10 from distributor Utopia, the film has a first trailer, which IndieWire shares exclusively. Take a look below.
The movie has been praised for its formal experimentation, as what begins as a more traditional documentary soon unfolds into something much stranger. IndieWire’s Eric Kohn raved about the film out of Sundance, writing, “At first glance, ‘Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets’ unfolds as a brilliant work of cinema verite. Bill and Turner Ross’ boozy hangout movie captures the last raucous night at the Roaring Twenties, a grimy bar on the outskirts of the Vegas strip where various...

George Marshall’s classic comedy Western Destry Rides Again finally gets its due with its inclusion in the esteemed Criterion Collection. A notable entry in the filmography of its director and lead stars, it was one of the first notable genre hybrids, the success of which would generate a legion of evolving formulaic successors.
Notably, this was the first time Jimmy Stewart would star in a Western, a genre he would return to in the 1950s with several Anthony Mann collaborations. The jack-of-all-trades Marshall would also return to the genre, directing a segment of the classic How the West Was Won (1962) and also remade the title in 1954 as Destry, starring Audie Murphy.…...
