Back in 2022, it was reported that Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut, All-Star Weekend, was shelved and the reason has pointed to the controversial casting of Robert Downey Jr. in a role that has only been described as “Mexican.” Foxx and Downey Jr. have collaborated in the past and Foxx has been supportive of Downey Jr. when criticisms surface of his satirical role in Tropic Thunder when he appears in black face. Foxx spoke of the shelving, “It’s been tough…with the lay of the land of comedy…We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again.”
While Foxx has moved on to other projects, this past week, he has taken to his YouTube channel to “leak” a trailer for All-Star Weekend. His strategy brings to mind when Ryan Reynolds spent years trying to get a Deadpool movie off the ground and it...

So, the Oscars have been and gone and there were few surprises in the acting categories. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor for “Oppenheimer” while Best Actress went to Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). Best Supporting Actor was taken home by Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph claimed Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers.” But let’s not spend too much time looking back. Let’s look forward. With that in mind, what have these four acting winners got coming up next?
Murphy won his first Oscar for portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic. His next project is “Small Things Like These,” which just premiered to great acclaim at Berlinale. Directed by BAFTA nominee Tim Mielants, the film follows Murphy as a father in 1985 who uncovers the shocking secrets of the local convent.

Comedians are having to reinvent themselves in the modern era of social awareness. Comedy has long been a device to promote social discourse, used as a space for comedians to bring awareness to social issues and get people talking about them. Think Norman Lear sitcoms like "All in the Family" or George Carlin's controversial takes on religion and media.
But with social media and a changing barometer of what's socially appropriate, the business of comedy is changing. For some, the threat of being canceled means taking past punch lines off the setlist. But not everyone is listening.
For example, in a time when transgender rights are being stripped, Ricky Gervais and Dave Chapelle still recently released Netflix specials that included transphobic jokes. It caused a fair amount of backlash, though neither has suffered any real consequence, short of one Chapelle show cancellation in Minneapolis.
Before we went all-in on cancel culture,...

Bill Maher caused a social media uproar after his HBO show “Real Time” Friday night when he said that abortion “doesn’t affect my life. I ain’t getting anybody pregnant,” while instead complaining about what does affect him — the shelving of Jamie Foxx and Shonda Rhimes projects because of sensitive race issues.
The conversation began with Maher telling his panelists — Washington Post op-ed columnist Catherine Rampell and Commentary Magazine’s Noah Rothman — that he didn’t care when televangelist Jerry Falwell claimed that the purple Teletubby was gay. “I’m not into the Teletubbies,” said Maher, who immediately flipped the subject. “Now? I want to see the Jamie Foxx movie. That affects my life.”
Foxx told CinemaBlend earlier this week that his 2016 film “All-Star Weekend” had been shelved because of some of its more outrageous characters, including Robert Downey Jr. as a Mexican man. “It’s been tough with...

Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut may never actually debut. This is chiefly due to the controversy over casting Robert Downey Jr. in what has only been described as a Mexican. While promoting his latest, the vampire comedy Day Shift, Foxx discussed the status of his shelved basketball-centric comedy All-Star Weekend.
It’s been tough…with the lay of the land of comedy…We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again.”
It seems Foxx was actively avoiding the hot-button phrase “cancel culture”, a modern form of backlash that a movie like, say, Tropic Thunder, dodged by a few years.
Obvious comparisons can be made to Downey Jr.’s role in that movie, in which he (in)famously played a white Australian actor who gets “pigmentation alteration” surgery to play a Black soldier. That role did draw controversy–and was especially risky considering it...

Jamie Foxx is implying that political correctness is why his movie “All-Star Weekend” has yet to see the light of day.

Jamie Foxx recently told CinemaBlend that his unreleased directorial effort “All-Star Weekend” remains shelved due to the current state of comedy. The Oscar winner shot the comedy in 2016 with a cast that includes Jeremy Piven, Robert Downey Jr., Benicio del Toro, Gerard Butler and Eva Longoria.

Downey Jr. took a page from his “Tropic Thunder” playbook and starred as a Mexican man in “All-Star Weekend,” while one of Foxx’s multiple roles was allegedly a white racist cop. Today (April 4th) marks the 55th birthday of the Hollywood legend that is Mr. Robert Downey Jr. The actor’s been a major name in the business for decades, earning himself an Oscar nomination back in 1992 for Chaplin, but as we all know, his portrayal of Tony Stark in the McU is what lifted him to a phenomenal level of fame and acclaim.
He officially vacated the role of Iron Man, at least on a regular basis, in last year’s Avengers: Endgame, but all the birthday messages that Marvel fans have been sharing on social media today make clear that his contribution to the franchise will never be forgotten.

Exclusive: Filmmaker Deon Taylor is set to direct Sony Screen Gems’ Exposure, off Peter A. Dowling’s spec which the label acquired a year ago, as Deadline reported exclusively.
Exposure follows a rookie Detroit African-American female cop who stumbles upon corrupt officers who are murdering a drug dealer, an incident captured by her body cam. They pursue her through the night in an attempt to destroy the footage, but to make matters worse, they’ve tipped off a criminal gang that she’s responsible for the dealer’s death.
Eric Paquette is overseeing the project for Screen Gems. In a major worldwide rights deal, Paquette also brought Taylor’s latest movie The Intruder into the studio. After more than a year on the market with an in-hindsight pie-in-the-sky initial asking price of $10.495 million that incrementally dropped to a still too aggressive $8.995 million, Jeremy Piven has engaged the services of a new, high-profile real estate agent and re-listed his beach front residence in Malibu, Calif., with a once-again reduced price of $8.5 million. The former “Entourage” star, whose CBS series “Wisdom of the Crowd” was cancelled last year during its freshman season amid mounting allegations of sexual assault, which the actor has denied, purchased the 4,404-square-foot, three-story home in 2004 for $3.5 million and the four-bedroom and 3.5-bathroom residence, along one of Malibu’s most sought after streets, according the marketing materials, had also been available in recent years as a furnished short-term rental at prices that fluctuated between $30,000 and $50,000 per month.

Jamie Foxx is set to star in the latest “Spawn” from Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse Productions, sources confirm to Variety.
McFarlane, who created the original comic, is on board to write and direct the pic. He will also produce with Jason Blum.
The Spawn character first appeared in print in 1992, and gained popularity in the comics community almost instantly. In 1997, New Line adapted the character into a feature film starring Michael Jai White. HBO also took a crack at the antihero in an animated series that lasted for three seasons, each with six episodes, and earned two Emmy Awards.
In the comics, Spawn is a human-turned-Hellspawn who possesses superhuman strength and speed, and near immortality. Spawn also has the ability to teleport, shapeshift, and heal.

In the film world, it’s rare to run across a unionized position that doesn’t have a set pay scale, but such is the case with production office coordinators, who just happen to be the indispensable individuals who keep the entire set running smoothly. Every department — from the bottom rung up to the studio level — interacts with POCs on a regular basis.
Production coordinators, who report to the unit production manager or producer, help tie together all the elements required to ensure a production’s success. Yet even though they perform such critical functions as balancing responsibilities and pay rates, they’re left to justify their worth at each job negotiation, unlike most other film workers.

Not just because she dons an assortment of them as Margot Beste-Chetwynde, a feminist and bourgeois widow, in the 1930s-set miniseries Decline and Fall, premiering in the U.S. Monday, May 15 on Acorn TV.
