On July 27, 2017, Jamie Foxx said on Joe Rogan's podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, Robert Downey Jr. Gerard Butler and Benicio Del Toro are planned to star. Foxx revealed that Downey Jr. is playing a Mexican and that it is not meant to be an offensive performance in the same interview.
This is Jamie Foxx's directorial debut for a theatrical film.
This marks the third time Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx have starred together. They previously appeared together in The Soloist (2009) and Due Date (2010).
Deadline Hollywood revealed that the movie could have been released in late 2019 when Foxx joined The Wild Bunch.
