One would assume that her stature in society would exempt her from the harsh realities of sexism. However, the cruel thing about chauvinism is that it spares no one. Unfortunately, no amount of achievements seems to stop people from questioning whether a woman should be in a particular field.
Carano was asked a similar question by Mma legend Nick Diaz, and she knew exactly what to say to make him understand her perspective.

The Criterion Channel’s August lineup pays tribute to auteurs of all kinds: directors, actors, and photographers, fictional or otherwise. In a notable act of preservation and advocacy, they’ll stream 20 titles by the Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, here introduced by the great Richard Peña. More known (but fun all the same) is a five-title Paul Thomas Anderson series including the exclusive stream of Licorice Pizza, as well as a Philip Seymour Hoffman series that overlaps with Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love (a Criterion Edition this month), and The Master, plus 25th Hour, Love Liza, and his own directing effort Jack Goes Boating. Preston Sturges gets five movies, with Sullivan’s Travels arriving in October.

The legal and cultural cage match between Gina Carano and the Walt Disney Company over the Mouse House deep-sixing the former Mma star from The Mandalorian in 2021 just saw more blood spilled.
“Disney has confirmed what has been known all along, they will fire you if you say anything they disagree with, even if they have to Misrepresent, Malign, and Mischaracterize you to do it,” wrote Carano today (capitalization hers) on social media.
“They are now on record letting everyone who works for them know that Disney will take any chance they get to control what you say, what you think or they will attempt to destroy your career,” she said, a day after Disney filed a motion to dismiss Carano’s wrongful discharge and sex discrimination lawsuit over her firing from Mandalorian. “Glad we cleared that up.”

In late 2018, Gina Carano — a pioneering mixed martial arts champion who successfully transitioned to acting in Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film Haywire — was blissfully staring up at the stars. They weren’t actual stars, but digital facsimiles projected onto a massive, domed screen — all part of a groundbreaking new effects technology from Industrial Light & Magic known as the Volume. Carano lived in Hermosa Beach at the time, just 15 minutes from Manhattan Beach Studios, where she was working on a top-secret sci-fi project, code name Project Huckleberry. But thanks to the Volume, she might as well have been 3 million light years away.

Black Bag: Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender to star in Steven Soderbergh, David Koepp spy thriller
We have a double header of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp news to report today. Not only has their ghost story Presence (read our review Here) secured distribution through Neon, but The Hollywood Reporter has also revealed that they’re re-teaming for a spy thriller called Black Bag, which is set to star Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley) and Michael Fassbender (The Killer).
Soderbergh and Koepp are currently seeking financing and distribution for Black Bag, with the project having gone out to studios and streamers last week. If one of the studios and streamers decided to pick up the project, that hasn’t been reported yet. They better move quickly, because Soderbergh is hoping to get this film into production in May.
Filming is expected to take place in London, and so far the only thing that has been revealed about the film’s story is that it “is...

I’ve had them and I’m sure you’ve had them. Lousy days at work will happen at some point and many times it’s our fault. We’ve “scrooched the pooch” as they say, made an error, perhaps a miscalculation or even an uncrossed”t”. What’s the worst that could happen? Well, we could get fired or perhaps suspended or given a “stern warning” maybe along with a verbal “dressing down”. Yes, that’s with most regular jobs, but what if your profession is life or death? But more toward the latter if you’re a “murder merchant”, or a “gun for hire”. That’s at the heart of a new thriller from one of the most inventive filmmakers of the last few decades. He gives us a look at a “very bad, no-good day”, leading to several wretched weeks in the life of The Killer.

Ten years ago, The Criterion Collection dropped a dual-format edition of Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights. Included amongst its special features is behind-the-scenes footage of Chaplin forcing his co-star, Virginia Cherrill — a socialite the filmmaker spotted at a boxing match — to act out the scene of her blind flower girl handing his Tramp a rose 342 times. Chaplin’s relentless pursuit of perfection earned him the nickname “king of the re-take.” The crown was then passed to Stanley Kubrick who, if Guinness World Records is to be believed, required 148 takes of...

Like the “Jeanne Dielman” of assassin movies, “The Killer” centers on how the self-started glitches in one character’s routine cause their carefully ordered world to fall slowly off its axis. David Fincher’s sleek if small genre exercise plants us into the orbital sockets of an unnamed killer-for-hire, played by Michael Fassbender, whose self-deceptions catch up to him amid a contract job gone just about an inch wrong in Paris.
There are few surprises in this straight-line thriller, well-executed within a millimeter of its life as ever by the “Gone Girl” and “Social Network” director. Here, the perfectionist, you-might-say-control-freak director punches up a nimbly sketched screenplay by “Seven” scribe Andrew Kevin Walker that evokes no sympathy for its protagonist,...

Channing Tatum used to have his own qualms about action films led by female actors. But that changed when he was cast in this underappreciated feature.
Channing Tatum’s ‘female Bourne Identity’ helped change his mind on female action movies Channing Tatum | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Tatum used to have reservations regarding the action genre as a whole. The star at one point confided that he preferred to star in romance films instead of stories with high thrills and large explosions
“I don’t like action movies, they’re not that interesting – although they’re fun to do for the physical element of it, I guess,” Tatum once said according to Female First.
Female-driven action movies were no exception. It seemed that at the time Tatum just didn’t find most women in action films believable.
“My wife always hates when I go, ‘I just don’t love female action movies!

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.
Check out the “Tiny Beautiful Things” trailer:
Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Through multiple timelines, the series explores all the traumatic ripples the mystery created for countless people. The series will star Alycia Debnam-Carey,...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

[This story contains a spoiler for The Mandalorian season three premiere.]
In the aftermath of Gina Carano’s firing from The Mandalorian two years ago, the Star Wars show’s season three premiere has answered the long-speculated question of what would happen to her character.
Introduced in the show’s first season, Carano played Cara Dune, an Alderaanian warrior who ultimately rose to the rank of marshal of the New Republic. In her time on the series, Dune was a strong ally to protagonist Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and baby Grogu. Before becoming marshal, Dune worked as a mercenary for hire on Nevarro for Greef Karga (Carl Weathers).
Released on Wednesday, the first episode of The Mandalorian‘s third season addressed Dune’s absence from the current storyline in a conversation between Din and now-High Magistrate Greef Karga. Karga explains that Dune was recruited by Special Forces of the New Republic, due to her part in...

Channing Tatum may be one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, but that doesn’t mean he’s immune from becoming starstruck.
During a recent interview with People, the “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” star recounts “one of the funniest” anecdotes, about when he lost his composure when he was introduced to Matt Damon while shooting the 2011 movie “Haywire”, directed by Steven Soderbergh.
“We’re in Albuquerque, and we’ve shot for the day. We’re all just hanging out at the hotel bar and Matt Damon comes by to hang out with Soderbergh,” Tatum recalled.

For a couple of decades now, Steven Soderbergh’s “little” movies — the lo-fi dramas, often quirky thrillers, that he makes as palate cleansers in between his higher profile projects — have been a pleasurably idiosyncratic, off-on-his-own-cloud thing. Some of them are good (like “Bubble” and “Side Effects”), some are meh (like “Haywire”), and one is great (“The Girlfriend Experience”); none of them make much of an impact in the marketplace. Yet you feel the pulse of filmmaking fervor in them. You could say they’re Soderbergh’s protest against blockbusterization, a way of reminding his audience, and maybe himself, that a few simple elements — story, actors, camera angles — can still add up to what a movie is. Only now, at a time of slow-motion crisis in the industry (will audiences come back to theaters?) and seriously over-inflated budgets, Soderbergh’s latest little movie, the nimble and sinister cyber-age corporate thriller “Kimi,...

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

Who is the biggest villain on Superman & Lois?
Superman & Lois Season 1 Episode 4 posed the pivotal question as we learned our titular characters were going on very different paths. Making time for one another is the key to a healthy relationship, which could be problematic.
Inevitably, their issues were mostly resolved by the close of the hour, but it seems like Samuel will be a big problem as we advance.
Dylan Walsh is playing his role to perfection. Samuel is the type of character we love to hate, and he's slowly losing his grip on Lois and the rest of the family because of his stupid actions.
Then again, his mind has been poisoned by Captain Luthor. His motives have never been obvious... until he decided to open the new protocol, which clearly teased that he's preparing for imminent doom thanks to Clark.
The storyline was actually handled well, what...

In the climax of Shigehiro Ozawa’s The Street Fighter (1974), “hero” Terry Tsurugi (Shin’ichi “Sonny” Chiba) attempts to rescue a kidnapped heiress by boarding the enemy’s ship and fighting his way through a mob of henchmen. Within the ensuing smorgasbord of pain and grievous injury, two moments stand out. After vaulting over a railing and sticking a crunchy landing on a guy’s back, Terry blocks an incoming swing and plows his fist into the assailant’s stomach. A grimace or yell are to be expected, but the film gives us much more: in slow motion and close-up, we watch as the poor man’s mouth flops open and white-orange bile streams out, still chunky with foodstuffs reversing their prior course. A second thug lunges in, but this reckless charge leads to his ensnarement in an armlock. As Terry snaps the man’s limb not once but three times,...

Welp, it’s been in the wind for a while but Gina Carano finally posted enough nonsense online for Lucasfilm to categorically state that it has no plans to work with her in the future and that her views are “abhorrent and unacceptable,” so it looks like we’ve seen the last of former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune in Disney+’s hugely popular Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” said Lucasfilm in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
A source told THR that Lucasfilm had “been looking for a reason to fire [Carano] for two months, and today was the final straw.” This was swiftly followed by confirmation from her talent agency UTA that they’d dropped her as a client.

In the wake of Gina Carano’s controversial social media posts, Lucasfilm has released a statement Wednesday night, with a spokesperson saying “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Carano played bounty hunter Cara Dune on the first two seasons Lucasfilm and Disney+’s The Mandalorian, and it looked like we’d be seeing more of her. It appears not.
The actress shared a TikTok post comparing the current divided political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany.
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews,...
