Movie is so good until the climax... Which is pathetic.
It's suicidal from the writer. There is no reason to believe that cases such as this will end like that. It's so disappointing to see such a climax after a wonderful flow of the movie until that moment.

Salute - directed by Rosshan Andrrews, written by Bobby and Sanjay - does not adhere to the conventions of the Malayalam film-verse. It is neither loud nor flashy as commercial cop films from this industry often are. It is not preoccupied with the hero's swag, which is particularly commendable because that hero is played by the producer. It is also not about dirty cops alone nor about a clean-as-a-whistle Robin Hood, but revolves around an individual who falls in the sizeable space in between.
Rosshan Andrrews's Salute, which features Dulquer Salmaan in the role of a cop trying to crack a case gone cold, joins the long list of impressive cop thrillers from the industry and makes for a riveting watch. The film, which doesn't quite rely on shocking twists, majorly works due to its focused storytelling, and in spite of being slow-paced, it still manages to keep one engaged till the end.
Dulquer plays Sub-Inspector (SI) Aravind Karunakaran, whose role model to join the force is his own brother Ajith Karunakaran, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) played by Manoj K Jayan. Aravind looks up to his brother and takes pride in working under him. Ajith leads a team that's after a faceless killer. The police nab the guy who they believe is responsible for the double murders, but there is not enough evidence to prove it. However, the real criminal turns out to be someone else and the police, upon learning of their goof up, decide to just let it all resolve on its own. Aravind's conscience doesn't let him be at peace. To nab the real killer, Aravind goes on long leave and starts to investigate on his own, earning the wrath of his own brother and his team.
The film offers enough meat about Aravind's investigation to keep that part of the plot absorbing, and spends a fair amount of time developing a couple of the policemen played by Manoj K Jayan and Alencier Ley Lopez who are Aravind's combatants. This, and the moral questions raised in Salute, keep the first half engrossing. In the portions where the action moves away from Aravind's involvement with these men, it dips because it is too focused on Aravind, and as it happens, this is also where the narrative is needlessly expanded.
It seems like a familiar story, but it is done in a gripping enough manner to keep us intensely engaged. Things get heated up when Aravind turns renegade in the group and doesn't want to be part of a corrupted investigation and attempts to come clean to higher authorities. It is a situation that could prove catastrophic for the police, so it becomes a high-stakes game within the team to save their position, come what may. Here Bobby-Sanjay are in their element in using one tense situation on top of another to get us emotionally heated about the corruption in the system.
What really works in the film's favour is the narrative style. Unlike most cop thrillers, Salute isn't in a hurry to make the hero catch the criminal. This isn't one of those films where the twists blow you away. In fact, the film rarely relies on any major twists and rather spends its time on letting the hero be haunted by his own conscience and a faceless villain. Every time we feel like the hero is very close to nabbing the killer, the story takes a detour and Aravind hits a roadblock. Here, we don't get a hero who's invincible but someone who is as vulnerable as anyone. The fact that the film never tries to glorify Dulquer's cop character is a major highlight for the film.
One reason why Salute works even through its missteps is the atmosphere the director manages to build with the aid of Jakes Bejoy's music and DoP Aslam K Purayil's frames that smoothly shift from the personal to the panoramic and back when the need arises. The other is Dulquer Salmaan himself who remains thoroughly invested in his character's dilemmas from beginning to end. His expressive face conveys Aravind's inner conflicts as he finds himself being drawn into appalling police practices, shocked at the heartlessness of a loved one and subsequently when he realises that his reparation will cause great damage to that person.
Salute is worth a watch and will be particularly appreciated by Dulquer Salmaan fans.

Neither bad nor great as it might not be everyone's cup of tea. It will take a while for the film to kick in but even when it slightly does nothing was fascinating about the film which is usually expected from a crime thriller, even though the graph was just steady and slow the plot to an extent keeps us engaged, at least the last 15-20 minutes. Felt something was missing and It might be a bit of a task to finish the film in a single stretch. Overall a decent film.

Slow burning investigative drama. The climax is the ultimate one and it leave the conclusion brilliantly. It has lot of up and downs in the movie flow. The investigative angle and the revealing of character in layer by layer is really interesting part of this movie.

Rosshan Andrrews single-handedly redefined the Malayalam police investigation genre with his groundbreaking "Mumbai Police" (2013) and when it was announced that he was combining with superstar Dulquer Salmaan in the young hero's first-ever cop role, the expectations were already through the roof. Unfortunately, despite an excellent premise and some captivating moments here and there, "Salute" overall doesn't live up to its promise and meanders to a dull watch by the end.
Dulquer Salmaan stars as "Aravind Karunakaran" a disillusioned sub-inspector who has a crisis of conscience and decides to revisit an old case where he was forced by his superiors and political masters to frame an innocent man of murder. Hot on the trail of an elusive con-artist and serial killer, the troubled cop also has to contend with a group of corrupt policemen from his own ranks who are looking to cover up evidence of their malpractices.
Manoj K Jayan excels in a key supporting role and conveys all the gravitas and emotional turmoil his character goes through with the practised perfection of a seasoned veteran. Malayalam cinema really needs to make better use of such a gifted character actor, whose last memorable role came way back in 2012 with "Thattathin Marayathu".
Script-writers Bobby and Sanjay who have given Malayalam some of the finest thrillers in recent memory like "Traffic" (2011), "Mumbai Police" (2013) and "Kaanekkaane" (2021) opt for an unconventional gritty procedural approach for this tale. In searching for his elusive prey, our hero cop has to unravel a web of lies and deceit and we get more insight to the protagonist's psyche and personal demons as we get deeper and deeper into the investigation.
Dulquer Salmaan has clearly given the role his all and exudes the requisite dominating physicality and air of a steadfast policeman, while also displaying the vulnerability and anguish brought on by the weight of the predicaments he comes across. Diana Penty is downright atrocious as his love interest and provides nothing but cringe and facepalm-worthy moments in every scene she is in with her lip-synch going all over the place to add insult to injury to her abysmal acting.
The film deserves some praise in the way it depicted how an inefficient and corrupted system can bring down even the most moralistic police officers. The storyline is at its most impactful when it showcases the mental trauma and guilt an officer goes through when being forced to tow the company line but becomes an utter failure when looked through upon as a thriller.
The narrative promises a lot and manages to hook the audience and the quickening of narrative pace in the second half promises a riveting conclusion, only to offer up an unsatisfying and frankly, patronizing climax that leaves much to be desired. Alancier, Binu Pappu, Indrans and Vijayakumar Prabhakaran shine in their supporting roles while Saniya Iyappan makes no impact in a caricature-ish 'protagonist's niece who he is fond of' role.
Salute ends up as a mediocre thriller that had all the right elements and an excellent plot outline to work with but manages to squander it all in an ill-conceived effort to be different for different's sake. Perhaps the weight of expectations that another Bobby-Sanjay and Rosshan Anddrews combination carries worked to the project's undoing.

Salute (2022) was indeed amazing and entertaining and way more entertaining than Dulquer Salmaan's previous film, Kurup (2021). The film is slow paced, but its a must watch film for Indians who love investigation thrillers. Manoj K Jayan has rocked his role as a DYSP officer. I would give it 7.9/10.

A One time watchable movie. Dulquer has done his role well but he should have given little more space in to his role. Casting is good. This movie cannot be seen as an investigation thriller or crime thriller. Yes, there is crime and investigation, but I felt dryness in these somewhere. The unknown culprit concept is good. Movie showed the best and worst parts of police. The decision to bring in OTT was good.

Rosshan Andrrews' latest is his 7th collaboration with the writer duo of Bobby-Sanjay. Salute was scheduled to release in theatres in January but was delayed due to the Omicron wave. It finally released directly on SonyLiv, which created an uproar among the theatre owners in Kerala.
Salute is the story of Aravind Karunakaran, a sub-inspector, who along with his elder brother and few other policemen fabricate evidence to put a man behind bars. Overcome by guilt, Aravind tries to unveil the truth by gathering new evidence against the wishes of his other colleagues.
Dulquer Salmaan continues his excellent form in Salute. His restrained performance works well for this realistic police drama. Though you can't compare it with the iconic Mumbai Police that this director-writer duo came up with; Salute does manage to hold its own for most part. The makers do a decent job in keeping you guessing. Manoj K Jayan plays Dulquer's brother, Diana Penty makes her Malayalam film debut. Binu Pappu, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Saniya Iyappan, Alencier, Indrans, Boban Alummoodan co-star.
Saulte's runtime does pose some problems. For a thriller, Salute is a tad bit too long. There are times when you feel the characters are going around in circles but I loved their take on indentity theft. The background score by Jakes Bejoy is pulsating and apt.

Salute is a fresh air in the making of an investigative journey wherein there are no sensationalism baked into the plot with twist, twist after twist rather we are invited to a world of investigators on how the challenges they face and how they try to maintain a balance between right & wrong.
The film also commences a beginning in the style of international cults where the makers together with the characters try to figure our the unknown and in the end they had to give up or be convinced that this is the far most extreme they can investigate. This was a satisfying experience to see our movies getting to a league of an international quality in this genre, and kudos to the filmmaker & writers.
The film starts off well, and the dynamics it brought in to build the first act was fascinating, protagonist & his brother, being in the same profession and working together in the same team, unknowingly gets into a place where they take separate ways professionally & personally, protagonist in search of fair investigation, and his brother to save his position by covering up the evidences planted for the same investigation
The film progresses well from the protagonist point of view to get into the layers that gets unfold, and the treatment that was chosen fits well into the overall feel.
I would disagree this is a slow burner, rather the pacing was apt and it hooked me to the plot once the first conflict was established.
The second half was way more interesting, and it reminded me of Zodiac, the way investigators get close to the killer and then they realise they are way off and then later they find something that links it back to the killer. It was realistically dealt with, there was no moment to glorify any actor or any character to make it a saucy thriller, enticing viewers to grab attention.
The climax was beautifully thought of leaving viewers in a state where they usually don't find themselves after watching the usual thrillers Indian Cinema are made. The viewers should not have any expectation of any formal closure to the investigation wherein the investigator or their team present a detail report on the killer with flashback and then a twist to surprise the audience, no that's not how this film has to reviewed or validated.
Barring the side characters and the love interest that failed to make a mark, this definitely marks a beginning of a treatment where personally I prefer to have these more often in Indian Cinema, and it's a brave effort from the makers and producer to invest making this film.

Film Review SALUTE : Malyalam film streaming on Sony LIV ( Hindi audio with English subtitles available)
#sanjuzzreviews #salutefilm #SonyLIVIndia
Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, Salute is a Malyalam mystery thriller starring Dulquer Salmaan as SI Arvind who has a change of heart after he discovers that he has fabricated evidence under pressure from politicians and framed an innocent person in a murder case.
He tries to run away from it all, but finally realises that the only way to unburden the load on his conscience is to revisit this long closed case and bring the real killer to book .
However things aren't so simple as it might spell doom for him and his brother who was heading the investigations.
Even though this is a film from the thriller genre and deals with police investigations, it is not your typical "maar dhaad" masala film. It is, on the contrary, a slow burn police procedural film which is very realistic. This riveting cop drama replete with new ideas is Dulquer Salman's film all the way as he encounters one roadblock after another in his quest to uncover the truth. His frustrations and efforts seem genuine and touch your core .
Might seem a bit slow but definitely worth a watch !! The ending is a bit different too, unlike the usual cop dramas.
My rating 3.5/5 .. adios 🙂

Definitely a must watch from DQ. Puts on a different taste to the crime genre. Explores the real aspects of difficulties faced by an honest policeman in today's world.

The movie is of a slow pace , mostly going technical on policing procedure. The way it's narrated is good. Some might not be happy with how it ended, but for me I felt it kore like breaking the cliche style of story telling
Can't compare this to the epic Mumbai Police but salute ia still a good watch.

First I like the story telling, screenplay and finally awesome ending..
Classic example of Mystery thriller..
Dulquer and Manoj k jeyan acting is superb..
Another nice experience with DQ films..
Direction, photography and art director works are very nice..
I had wanted to watch Salute from the time it was announced. While I am not the biggest fan of Roshan Andrews' Mumbai Police, I have grown to appreciate it more over time.
I had the same issue with this movie that I had with Mumbai Police and Prathi Poovan Kozhi. I liked the movie, but not the ending. But I will give it 7 stars because movie stays engaging throughout.
I am not sure why Diana Penty was cast in this film. While I can understand her acting as a non-Malayali, she speaks in Malayalam and as expected, the lip movement does not match the dialogue. Not sure why they needed an actress as famous as her for a role which is not particularly important.
Overall, the investigation was interesting, but the ending felt a bit anti-climactic.

A gripping investigation story which seriously lacks the punch. The script and story is good, but the biggest let down is the making. Never expect a Rosshan Andrew movie this dull. The BGM is too average and not adrenalin pumping ( may be it is the approach they intended, but won't be pleasing for many including me). Overall, one time watch for the story/script.

Salute starring Dulquar Salman in the lead role..
Directed by Roshan Andrews and penned by Bobby-Sanjay
Verdict of the movie : Super Hit, 4/5 ⭐
Story revolves of a mystery of crimes done by a person and Dulquar Salman is on a mission to find the culprit...
Intially screen play starts with much doubts to the audience but gradually as the movie travels, step by step each door is unlocked and it reveals behind the crime...
Very intriguing thriller experience. Screenplay at various situations was unexpected twists. When we feel that this is the end, a new twist comes up...
Highlight of the movie was the climax. An out and out unexpected climax which to few people feel disappointed but considering the other side sometimes this might be the reality...
Dulquar Salman as SI role beautifully performed. Other co stars done their part very well..
A must watch movie on Sony Liv Platform.

Movie has it's flaws and it's strengths.
Strength - Strength has to be the acting from the whole ensemble cast. Direction and screenplay for a slow burn thriller/drama is fantastic. The post-climax ending is brilliant.
Flaws - The background score didn't excite me.
Low scope for the actors involved (wasted characters) and mind me there are a lot of really good actors in this movie.
A shaky climax.

A recent OTT release produced by DQ and directed by Roshan Andrews. Its a slow moving but thrilling police story. DQ and Manoj K Jayan played above average.
Due to the pressure from political party a group of police officers are compelled to create some evidence and arrest an innocent auto driver against a murder case happened in a village. Out of the five officers one was against this act he started to investigate. Finally the hero found who is the culprit and story ends here.
The script is not upto the mark. BGM at the end is good.
Off topic- Policing is not a good option of innocent people.

Salute (2022) :
Brief Review-
Praiseworthy attempt, but dragged. Salute confers us with a slow burn, which is indeed very slow. Visaranai, Nayattu, Naandhi and a recent one, Writer, South Industries have exposed the Police Department fearlessly and thoughtfully. Halfway through Salute, it looks like another attempt in a similar zone, but then changes directions, only to make you realise that all that was shown up to this point was completely useless. S. I Aravind Karunakaran, a police officer on voluntary leave, is haunted by an old case he investigated. How far will he go to unravel the mystery and bring the truth to light? Police suppression is the main theme they try to achieve, but by the end, you realise that it was more about that unknown criminal. Well, that's one thing to notice. The entire film actually revolves around the criminal, but you never see his face, that's rare. And he even wins the battle from his side; that's more rare; and then comes the soft, rectifying explanation from the police side, and that's where the film drags. Visaranai, Nayattu, Naandhi and Writer not only break the silence on corrupt police officers but also speak against them, whereas Salute is more about showing the positive side, which is a big mismatch. You know the cops are wrong, but they just don't feel anything about that, nor does the film try to humiliate them. Why so mild? I couldn't figure that out. The performance of Dulquer Salmaan stands out. I've seen almost all of Dulquer's high-rated films, and with each one, I fall more in love with him. Manoj K. Jayan passed out as the second best, while the others were strictly average. The technical aspects of the film are decent, with a special mention going to that intense background score. Rosshan Andrrews' filmography isn't that great, so I think this was a suitable film for his standard. But I expected a better film from Dulquer. The script had the potential, though the storytelling didn't just work for me, despite some fantastic scenes.

#Salute from the makers of Mumbai Police,
Solid story but somewhere failed in execution,DQ and Manoj K. Jeyan's acting neat and clean Cinematography and BGMs are added advantage,if the climax had been like Mumbai Police Climax then it might be much better because the climax will not gonna satisfy all...Crime Investigation Thriller fans give a try for it..
