“Night Court” will be back in session for a third season, NBC announced on Friday.
The series stars Melissa Rauch in a follow-up to the 1984-1992 original, where she plays the eternally optimistic Abby Stone, who takes on the challenging role previously held by her revered late father, Judge Harry Stone (played by the late Harry Anderson), overseeing the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court.
Currently ranked as the network’s most-watched and highest-rated comedy series, the second season, executive produced by Rauch, Dan Rubin, Winston Rauch and John Larroquette, has amassed 24 million total viewers across linear and digital platforms to date.
In addition to Rauch, “Night Court” also stars John Larroquette, who reprises his role as former night court district attorney Dan Fielding when Abby asks him to serve as the court’s public defender. Still exceedingly self-confident, Fielding must adjust to a new boss and a new job – defending the downtrodden.

NBC has renewed Night Court for a third season. The announcement comes a little over one month after the Night Court Season 2 finale aired on Tuesday, March 26. The episode saw original cast member Marsha Warfield return for a third time as Judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch) let the former bailiff host her wedding in the courtroom. The episode also guest starred John Larroquette‘s former co-star on The John Larroquette Show, Gigi Rice, as the sister of Og character Christine Sullivan, Katie. Christine was played by the late Markie Post. Her reference in the Season 2 finale marked the first time the character got a tribute in the reboot. NBC has delivered a favorable verdict to Night Court.
The network has picked up a third season of its comedy series, a revival of/sequel to the 1984-92 show of the same name. Night Court is the first of NBC’s three current comedies to earn a spot on the 2024-25 schedule; decisions have yet to be made on Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family. NBC also has one new comedy, St. Denis Medical, on tap for next season, and a pilot called Happy’s Place starring Reba McEntire.
Night Court averaged 3.73 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings for its second season — down a good amount from its return in 2023 but still ranking as NBC’s most watched comedy. As with most scripted shows, it picks up a substantial audience boost via streaming; NBC didn’t provide detailed figures (as is usually the case with streaming) but said...

The last NBC drama series whose fate had not been determined, Law & Order: Organized Crime, is finalizing a deal for a 10-episode Season 5 renewal, sources said. As Deadline reported exclusively this month, the Wolf Entertainment series will be relocating from NBC to sibling Peacock, with the new season streaming exclusively on the platform.
The move gives the NBCUniversal streamer an original Dick Wolf drama series to go with the Wolf library and next-day runs of the company’s remaining NBC series Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu, which are among the platform’s most viewed titles.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.

The 41st annual PaleyFest LA celebrated the 10-year anniversary of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Monday, April 15 at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Watch Gold Derby associate editor Latasha Ford interview both of them above or read the full transcript below.
See John Larroquette (‘Night Court’) on being an Emmy legend with 4 consecutive wins before dropping out of the race
Latasha Ford:
So first and foremost, congratulations on making it to the 10 year mark.
Seth Meyers:
Thank you.
Latasha Ford:
What does this moment feel like for you? I’ll definitely start with you, Seth.
Seth Meyers:
I will only say that it feels like any other show week. You just do the show and then the great thing about doing a show for 10 years is you get to start on your 11th year.

Second in a series on broadcast network series renewals. This is a rarity — it’s still mid-April and ABC has already made decisions on all of its existing drama series.
The popular Nathan Fillion cop series The Rookie was the last to get word yesterday with a Season 7 renewal after some intense negotiations with the show’s new lead studio, Lionsgate, which acquired The Rookie producer eOne in December. It joins recently renewed Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1 and Will Trent, with The Good Doctor and Station 19 ending their runs.

Michael J. Fox is sharing his thoughts on how Hollywood has changed over the decades.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the Emmy-winning actor, who rose to fame in the 1980s following his roles in Palmerstown U.S.A., Night Court, Family Ties and Back to the Future, compared the entertainment industry now to when he got his start.
“There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous,’” Fox recalled. “I thought, wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous. Right, we were different.”
He added, “We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”

Exclusive: First in a series on broadcast network series renewals. NBC is well ahead of the game this season on the renewal-decision front, handing early pickups to freshman dramas Found and The Irrational as well as One Chicago, Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu while canceling Quantum Leap, La Brea and Magnum Pi.
That leaves just a headful of shows on the bubble, mostly on the comedy side. The one drama series still waiting to hear its fate is Law & Order: Organized Crime. It’s always been an outlier, a departure from the Dick Wolf procedural brand with its darker and serialized storytelling. Possibly as a result, the series starring Christopher Meloni has performed below the five other Wolf dramas on the linear NBC network, while it has reportedly done well on Peacock.

‘Night Court’: Dan Meets Christine Sullivan’s Sister in ‘Very Sentimental’ Finale Sneak Peek (Video)
Weddings bring everyone together. John Larroquette says fans of the original Night Court are in for a “sentimental” ride in the reboot’s Season 2 finale, airing Tuesday, March 26 on NBC. Indeed, in the TV Insider exclusive clip above, the Night Court reboot addresses original main character Christine Sullivan for the first time, as Dan meets Christine’s sister at Roz’s (Marsha Warfield) wedding. Christine was played by the late Markie Post (who died in 2021) in the original Night Court, joining the cast in Season 2 and remaining until the series finale. Christine and Judge Harry Stone were teased as a romantic pair for a long time, and Christine confessed her love for Harry as she said her goodbyes to everyone at the courthouse after she was elected to Congress. Dan left to pursue Christine, but neither Harry nor Dan were revealed to have ended up with her when the Night Court...

It’s a good day for fans of Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu, as NBC has officially picked up both legal dramas for the 2024-25 season.
This exciting news means that Law & Order will continue for Season 24, and Law & Order: Svu will continue for Season 26.
The renewals were announced alongside the pickups of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D.
Ominously missing from the renewals was the Christopher Meloni-led Law & Order: Organized Crime, currently in its fourth season, but the network is saying that the show’s future is “in discussion.”
The youngest entry in the sprawling Law & Order universe has been saddled with behind-the-scenes issues since its inception and has gone through countless showrunners.
The series typically takes on more serialized storylines as opposed to the procedural nature of the other two Thursday night dramas.

Jenifer Lewis is revealing that she experienced a devastating fall, after which she couldn’t move and thought she might die, during a trip to the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Lewis recalled, in a preview of a sit-down interview with Robin Roberts that aired on Good Morning America, that in 2022, she planned to retire and travel after Black-ish wrapped and she released a book. But in November of that year, an adventurous vacation went awry when she fell off of her hotel balcony.
During her first day at her resort in the Serengeti, Lewis was escorted to her room but she “wasn’t given a tour.” She wanted to get a closer look at the infinity pool out on the hotel balcony at night. “I went out, I was just taking in the fact that I was back in the Serengeti once again and I’m walking. … All of a sudden,...

If these two slack-jawed yokels look familiar, you might just be a big Night Court fan.
TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at this Tuesday’s Night Court (8/7c, NBC), with Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell reprising their roles as the hard-luck couple Bob and June Wheeler from the show’s original NBC run. In the clip, which you can watch above, Bob marvels at how nothing has changed in the courtroom in 30 years: “Judge Stone, you look the same!” Um, it was actually Abby’s late father Harry Stone who was the judge last time around, but never mind.

The original "Night Court" ran for 193 episodes over nine seasons. It was part of a magical Thursday-night lineup of sitcoms -- along with "Family Ties," "The Cosby Show," and "Cheers" -- that dominated the popular consciousness throughout the 1980s. "Night Court" was considered "the weird one" of that lineup, but it was no less popular, earning star John Larroquette four Emmys before he intentionally withdrew himself from consideration. Since its cancelation in 1992, "Night Court" has remained beloved by the people who initially saw it, and subsequent reruns have grown a few new fans along the way.
Sometime in 2019 or 2020, however, a revival of "Night Court" was floated to NBC, and they began developing the new series that debuted on their network in 2023. The "Night Court" revival saw the return of Larroquette as Dan Fielding, the once-lascivious-now-humbled prosecutor who served the night shifts at the Manhattan Criminal Court. Melissa Rauch has always known she wanted a Big Bang Theory co-star on Night Court. It was only a matter of time before it happened. That “dream,” as Rauch describes it to TV Insider, came true when Kunal Nayyar made his guest-star debut in Night Court‘s second season. Like most guest stars on Night Court, he only signed on for one episode. But Rauch tells us that as long as the show keeps running, he will absolutely be back. Nayyar and Rauch played pals on The Big Bang Theory, but they’re love interests on Night Court (airing Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC). Nayyar plays the suave and very famous British fashion designer Martini Todd Wallace. Judge Abby Stone is immediately interested in the debonaire man when he climbs into her office window to ditch paparazzi. He leaves behind a “glass slipper” when he continues to run from the cameras,...

Actor Brent Spiner's most visible acting role was probably Data, the android lieutenant commander on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." As Data, Spiner appeared in 176 episodes of "Next Generation," in the four spin-off movies, and in five episodes of "Star Trek: Picard." He also appeared on "Picard" as a new amalgam android character, as well as multiple members of the Soong family throughout various "Star Trek" shows. For an actor who was initially cast as an emotionless being, Spiner certainly played some of the franchise's more dramatic characters.
Spiner has always expressed a little ambivalence toward Data. While he certainly appreciates the money and fame brought to him by the role, Spiner felt that "Star Trek" might have robbed him of the ability to play a wide variety of parts. He feared casting agents would look at him and be unable to look past his "Star Trek" android.

The Night Court revival has seen the return of several characters from the original series, but I think fans are going to be most excited by the appearance of Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell as Bob and June Wheeler, the perpetually down-on-their-luck couple who always have a wild story about their misfortunes.
Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell will appear in next week’s episode, “Wheelers of Fortune,” you can check out some photos of their Night Court return below.
Kate Micucci joins the pair as their daughter Carol Ann. “Huge surprises are in store for Dan when he’s tasked with representing Bob and June Wheeler, the notoriously unfortunate couple from the original iteration who resurface – this time with daughter Carol Ann in tow,” reads the episode’s synopsis. “While 30 years may have elapsed, their bad luck undoubtedly continues to plague them.“

Credit: Todd Williamson/NBCUniversal Melissa Rauch was just three years old when the original Night Court premiered on NBC, and she was 12 by the time it ended its run. That gave her an opportunity to become a huge fan of the show, which — after she’d found big success on The Big Bang Theory — inspired her to pitch the idea of a revival. Now, that revival is in its second season, and Rauch admits she still can’t believe she’s working on the same set she loved watching so much when she was younger. "Night Court" was part of the legendary NBC Thursday night lineup back in the mid-1980s. It ran in a block with "The Cosby Show," "Cheers," and "Family Ties," a proud part of a sitcom renaissance that lasted through to the end of the decade. Of that lineup, "Night Court" was the black sheep, offering up broader characters, wackier scenarios, and a surrealist tone that kept it just a few steps removed from reality. The series was set in a Manhattan Criminal Court, but only during its night shift, when all the weird cases came in. Harry Anderson played Judge Harry Stone, although the late hours had made him playfully unbalanced. Also often on the night shift was prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), a lascivious narcissist and amusingly crude a-hole.

Up until 2014, the public at large didn't know about the extent of sexual crimes committed by comedian and TV star Bill Cosby. Since 2014, over 60 women have come forward with allegations of sexual assault, some of which stretch back to the 1960s. The many, many details of Cosby's assaults, cover-ups, and other crimes have been openly detailed in the news, and in the 2022 documentary series "We Need to Talk About Cosby."
Cosby's crimes make discussions of the hit series "The Cosby Show" a little fraught. Because the stories of sexual assault hadn't been made public yet, Cosby was easily accepted by mainstream sitcom viewers as a kindly, father-like figure: a perfectly put-upon patriarch of a modern, wealthy Black family. "The Cosby Show" was instantly successful and widely beloved when it debuted in 1984, and it lasted eight seasons and 201 episodes. Everyone watched it. The verdict is in! Melissa Rauch is not guilty of suffering from “the Seinfeld Curse” (if you believe in such things). She wrapped her part as Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory in 2019 and has followed it up nicely with a brand-new role – Judge Abby Stone on the revival of Night Court, now in its second season on NBC (and streaming the next day on Peacock). Rauch is joined on the series by her husband, Winston Rauch, her fellow executive producer on the sitcom made famous by the late Harry Anderson (Judge Harry Stone). TV Insider caught up with Winston for a one-on-one interview when a gaggle of TV critics and reporters were invited to visit the famous Warner Bros. Studios lot earlier this month. Winston chatted about why he took his wife’s surname when they wed, why a few familiar faces are returning to the show later this season,...

The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

Comedies have always been Richard Kind‘s bread and butter. With memorable roles in shows like Spin City, Mad About You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Other Two, and now the Night Court reboot, the 67-year-old star has long been one of the industry’s best character actors. But he tells TV Insider that he craves his chance at a dramatic turn like his Spin City co-star/longtime friend Alan Ruck, who showed his dramatic chops in the incomparable HBO series Succession. After being “raised” on the original Night Court and long admiring John Larroquette‘s performance as Dan Fielding, Kind made his Night Court debut in Season 2 Episode 7 on Tuesday, February 13 on NBC. He plays Sy Feldman, a disgraced Broadway producer who’s in legal trouble over faulty investments in his failed shows. The character is a lot like Max Bialystok of The Producers, whom Kind played on Broadway in 2004 opposite Ruck as Leo Bloom.

Peacock has given straight-to-series order to Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary comedy headlined by NBA star Steph Curry and Happy Endings alum Adam Pally. The pickup for the project, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, was announced Wednesday at TCA along with three drama series orders by Peacock.
As Deadline reported exclusively last April, Mr. Throwback was originally set up at NBC for development. Speaking with reporters Tuesday from the comedy’s set on the Warner Bros. lot, Larroquette recalled his state of mind when he decided to reprise his character, Dan Fielding, for the NBC reboot. “As we all know, out of all of the originally cast, I am literally the only one left on the door like Leo in Titanic, wondering if I would make it.”

If there’s a funny show on TV, it’s a pretty good bet that Richard Kind has appeared on it.
The veteran actor has logged memorable guest appearances on dozens of TV comedies over the years, along with regular stints on Mad About You and Spin City, among others. So it’s no surprise that Kind pops up on this Tuesday’s Night Court (NBC, 8/7c) as unscrupulous Broadway producer Sy, who lands in court after getting caught selling fake theater memorabilia. So did Kind base this character on any Broadway producers he may have worked with?
