There was a mixed reception to the first night of Academy Awards coverage on ITV, which secured the UK broadcast rights after two decades of the Oscars being aired pay-per-view on Sky.

Viewers peaked at 1.1m and averaged at 630,000 for the overnight broadcast, which began at 10:15pm and ran until 2:30am, but there was considerable backlash to the tone and format.

A peak audience of 1.9m viewers tuned into UK broadcaster ITV’s coverage of the Academy Awards last night.

According to figures published by Screen’s sister title Broadcast, the ceremony’s 1.9m peak audience came at 10.30pm – equating to a 21% share of UK viewers.

In total, the Oscars were watched by an average of 637,000 viewers across ITV’s four hour coverage of the awards for a 14.9% share.

For ITV, these figures will likely be regarded as a success. Broadcast reported that ITV’s Oscars coverage had nearly double the average number of viewers that the broadcaster traditionally gets across the same time period.

ITV took a gamble when they snatched the U.K. broadcast rights to the Oscars away from Sky after two decades and it looks like the gamble paid off.

The three-hour plus show averaged 551,000 viewers on Sunday evening. At its peak, around 10.16pm, 1.1 million were watching.

Last year’s show on Sky averaged 95,000 viewers while a highlights cut the following evening garnered 141,000.

ITV1 are set to air highlights of the show on Monday evening while the full simulcast is still available to watch on streaming platform Itvx.

Emily Blunt has apologised for referring to a restaurant worker as “enormous” on a chatshow that aired 11 years ago.

In a resurfaced clip from an episode of The Jonathan Ross Show first broadcast on ITV in September 2012, the star of the summer blockbuster Oppenheimer said a waitress who served her at a Chili’s restaurant in Louisiana was “enormous”.

Britney Spears has written about her controversial conservatorship in her upcoming memoir, including the fact that she tried to speak about it on a TV chat show in 2016 – but her comments never made it to air.

In her forthcoming book, The Woman in Me, Spears writes: “I even mentioned the Conservatorship on a talk show in 2016, but somehow that part of the interview didn’t make it to the air. Huh. How interesting.”
