The combination and interplay of text and illustrations really is impressive. Would I sit down and read this like a novel? Nah. But would I share this resource as a living book full of ideas, information, and interest? Definitely.
I read this aloud to my 5yo son (he wasn't super interested), 6yo son, and almost 8yo daughter. It was kind of dense, and there's no way they understood everything, but no worries, they didn't have to. We read it as part of our homeschool study of the Middle Ages, and I read in 10-15 minute segments. However, toward the end they begged to keep going, so we read for about 40 minutes until it was over. They really enjoyed it, and my daughter is talking about checking out Cathedral from the library.
