Excellently researched and narrated, however my mind ✨wandered✨ a lot. Mary Chestnut would have been my mortal enemy if we had lived in the same time period. Chewing tobacco is disgusting today, however in 1861 it was downright revolting. Both Lincoln and Anderson needed a hug. 3.5

Martha Crone This made me laugh!

Crystal Felice Totally agree about the hug for Lincoln and Anderson and the occasional nod off while reading.

Deborah Several folks are spelling Mary’s last name incorrectly. It is not “Chestnut” - it is “Chesnut” for the record…
Always enjoy Larson’s books, but this gets a bit in the weeds for my taste. LOVED “The Splendid and The Vile.”
One of my all time favorite reads!

Tim Warre Same. The sections about Mary Chesnut and some of the other POVs were such a slog and didn't add a huge amount to the narrative, it felt a bit baggy. However, it did make me want to learn more about the American Civil War.

Karen Ahh, yes, Mary Chesnut is hateful, as well as Ruffin. And Lincoln and Anderson totally need some hugs.
