5 ⭐️.
⤿ minor spoilers ahead.
no book has ever enraged me as much as this one here.
freida mcfadden has finally delivered a five star plot for me. before anything though, check trigger warnings for this thriller prior to reading. it holds very sensitive topics and scenes that might make many readers extremely uncomfortable. at some point, i had to close my kindle to compose myself because the anger was chocking me.
and the ending? are you actually kidding me? i have been fooled, and i’m never going to trust another one of freida’s protagonists ever again. this woman can’t write ONE sane character. all of them are psychopaths, period.
however, on a serious note, i truly mean it when i say this won’t be for everyone. the contents are very intense, and the plot twist included in the final chapter actually turned my stomach upside down. being a teacher, and manipulating your students so recklessly, is one of the cruelest things a human being can do. it is unbelievable.
this was dual pov, and that made the experience ten times better. it was very interesting to be in both addie and eve’s heads and see their thought processes throughout the storyline. although i sometimes wanted to smash their heads against a brick wall, and shove some sense down their throats, they were quiet the intriguing characters.
finally, that epilogue should be burned in the depths of hell. eve, i trusted you, you piece of shit. never again.

"“we’ll discuss this poem in greater detail this year,” he says. “as well as Poe’s love of the letter L. annabel lee. lenore. eulalie.” he winks at me. “adeline.”
at this moment, i don’t care if everyone in the school hates me. because my English teacher loves poe as much as I do. and he winked at me.
boy, what the fuck? if my teacher WINKED at me, i’d start crying. NO."
