A Thousand Splendid Suns

this story was so devastating yet beautiful in its own way. this book follows our two main characters born 20 years apart and their lives become intertwined, due to the devastating events they’re going through.
mariam and laila are two of the strongest fmc’s i’ve ever seen, the way that they endured so much but yet continued to keep their faith and held onto each other through hardships in their war-torn neighborhoods.
mariam was the result of an affair between her father and a servant. for this they were shunned and forced to live in a small shack far from the city. mariam looked up to her father all while her mother warned her about him and men like him. she endured so much but still kept a brave face. she truly deserved so much better and all the love in the world. deep down she wanted to be loved genuinely and when she did have it she cherished it 💔 i love her sm
laila was a girl with dreams so big and wore her heart on her sleeve and although she had a lot taken from her, she found a friend, an older sister, and a mother in mariam. the love between her and tariq was so pure and hopeless 🥺 laila was so smart and strong and brave. i loved her sm too
i loved this book so much, although it took my heart and chewed it up i would go through it all over again. i love historical fiction even if it isn’t real because somewhere in the past i know there are stories similar to these that have not been shared or heard. this book was just so shattering but beautiful because it felt so real.

One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.

mariam and laila are two of the strongest fmc’s i’ve ever seen, the way that they endured so much but yet continued to keep their faith and held onto each other through hardships in their war-torn neighborhoods.
They made her aware of her own lowliness, her plain looks, her lack of aspirations, her ignorance of so many things.

Mariam had never before been wanted like this. Love had never been declared to her so guilelessly, so unreservedly.

quotes:
Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. You remember that, Mariam.
"You know." "Know what?" "That I only have eyes for you."
Of all the hardships a person had to face, none was more punishing than the simple act of waiting.
"But I'm glad I have you. Every day, I thank God for you. Every single day. Sometimes, when your mother's having one of her really dark days, I feel like you're all I have, Laila."
"Me?" he says. "I'll follow you to the end of the world, Laila."
Though there had been moments of beauty in it, Mariam knew that life for the most part had been unkind to her.
