My first introduction to haenyeo was Lisa See's The Island of Sea Women. I never ended up finishing it (I find most of her books just okay, but nothing spectacular), but most reviews are positive. I was more interested in this author, because Mary does have a Korean background. And while I enjoyed the point she was trying to convey, some of the execution fell flat for me.
This story is actually less about haenyeo, and more about comfort women, the term for stolen Korean women given to Japanese soldiers during the time of Japanese occupation. It is a topic that is still felt by many. For some, the lingering hatred persists to this day. This wasn't a concept I learned about in school, or in a book, but rather a Korean friend I made in college. For a more in depth look on Japanese occupation, I highly recommend Pachinko.
