I believe they took a decent amount from the Silmarillion...though I haven't the stamina to read that one yet, so I can't be sure.

They added sooo much to the movies. There is the huge conflict between the orcs and Oakenshield which I don't remember being in the book. And they added some stuff so the characters from lord of rings could have a part and so it could all be related back to those books and movies. I love the movies and the book, glad you enjoyed it!
It was very well written and I love how it relates to the bible in a way. But I think its so boyish and violent. Thats just me. Don't get offended its just that Im not a boy im a girl and im into dramatic love and dystopian books not the typical war and mystical creatures sorta thing ya know what I mean. But I give this book like 3.5 stars because Jr Tolkien kept me reading that book till the end and thats pretty impressive knowing that I'll dump a book when i start to get bored or hate it just for the slightest second.
