Slices of life growing up in Copenhagen pre-WWII. Being young involves a lot of miscellaneous jobs, dodgy friends, smooching and the windy road to being published

Its fun to see how little people have changed in the nearly century since Tove Ditlevsen was young in Denmark.
She is a 15 year old, navigating the world with Hitler his rise. Despite all the geopolitics, precarious jobs, sexual intimidation and obsession with virginity take precedence while growing up.
Knowing each other 14 days before being engaged, anxiety for not being timely enough with life milestones, Youth covers a lot of familiar topics.

It does become more clear that the book is a fictionalized account of growing up, how does someone buy a poetry magazine accidentally and why does her salary grows faster than current day inflation.
Even Virginia Woolf A Room of One's Own is being referenced multiple times, showing a clear coming of age vibe.

Overall an interesting view on life in the interbellum and the universality of being young and growing up.

Dutch Quotes:
Terwijl ik de trap van het achterhuis oploop bekruipt me de angst dat ik nooit zal ontkomen aan de plek waar ik ben geboren.

Het is lastig jezelf te blijven als de dingen om je heen constant van vorm veranderen
