Coming of Age in Mississippi: The Classic Autobiography of a Young Black Girl in the Rural South

A must read. Published in 1968 when the author was still under 30. She tells so openly about her experiences as a child and young adult and her feelings about them. She packed more into those few years than most of us do in a lifetime. Incredible. We see what racism and extreme poverty look like and feel like, yet she does no preaching. She was working for the civil rights movement 24 hours a day in her early 20s, literally risking her life every single day.
Her writing is straightforward and effective. No frills.
Apparently she is still alive; i am so curious how she feels about things now.
