booktok saying this book isn't sad but sobbing at the end still. yea i'd cry too if i had to read a 200-page book about women losing "everything"
"everything" as in each woman Kawaguchi wrote only has one purpose in their life. should've done my research and seen that this book was written by a man.
first story: a smart, career woman crying over a man who chose his career over her. be fucking fr
second story: a woman devoting her life to care for her husband who has dementia. i don't have a problem with this one by itself, but after reading the other stories, there is a theme here.
third story: a woman losing her freedom to run her family's inn after her little sister passed. guilt-tripped by her friend saying "that's what your sister would've wanted." no, your sister could not respect that your dreams were different than hers
the last story: she chooses to give birth knowing she will die doing so? hello? fuck off.
the meaning of the stories aside, the writing was not for me either. i don't know where to pinpoint what was wrong with it, but i could not find myself immersed in any of the stories. it would take over 20+ pages to get to the exciting parts and it would be over in a page or two. the characters felt very two-dimensional and i found myself bored most of the time.

i’m glad i was the only one who didn’t like it 😧 i dnfed at the first story cus i could not get through it
agreed… the author was also bad at describing women’s physical appearances too in my opinion like i couldn’t wrap my head around what many of them looked like
It took 20 pages to get to the “exciting” parts (you’re being kinder here than I’d be lol) because those first 19 pages the author was too busy describing exactly what someone was wearing and also stressing how cool and cozy the cafe was despite having no air conditioning. Like seriously dude we get it, there’s a big ass brown ceiling fan in there that spins slowly.
Thanks for this. I'm on the third story and trying to force myself to finish the book. The fourth story sounds dreadful, so I may not finish the book. Thanks for providing details.
Thank you so much for the review. I’m spared. I was reading the sample, and I came across this line “tears are a woman’s weapon” - yup totally not how men look at women. And makes sense because it was a written by a man.
This review is perfect! I’m currently on the first story & already about to DNF this book because I cannot get behind her crying that he left her like be fr.
Thank God you saved my money, and yes what else can we except from a man in this generation to write like.
I agree the second story seemed the best (i.e. least sexist/conservative), but parts of it weirded me out.
First of all, she never ever got any gifts in the past. The one time her husband had a gift for her, he refused to gift it since she ruined the surprise? Geez.
Then the man not wanting to be a pity case while he's sick, hello? Perhaps she just loves you >.> I get the sentiment, but it would've been so much more strong and impressive if he'd said something along the lines of him wishing her a 'free' life of her own.
But the weirdest part to me is when the character very explicitly says that she does not want people to use her maiden name. However, the narrator continues to use her old name the whole time!

Thank you!! I knew that I was mad at this book (except not liking the writing style etc) but I couldn't put it exactly in words. I knew that the last story made me really angry and I knew why, but for first 3 stories I couldn't put my finger on it. Oh the third story... you helped me realize why it was so bad. If it ended up being what the writer first suggested it will be (that her little sister wanted her to come back so she could also pursue some of her dreams) it would be at least a little better?? But it ended up being what you wrote... Awful book
